    It looks like whoever is marketing this book wrote a very buzzword heavy abstract, and then pasted the introduction in after it. Has anyone checked to see who actually wrote this book, becase the whole "review" reads like marketing copy.

    Police chiefs in Texas aren't elected, they're typically appointed by the city manager, with approval of the city council. The city manager isn't elected either.

    We have our code etched in marble slabs by a bunch of low-paid college interns. We feel that this is the best method as it requres no power, is very robust, and allows for cheap restorations. (We have the same interns type it back in.)

    Another counter example:

    Chief Hurtt is an African American. In the sixties, Martin Luther King was the victim of illegal wiretapping by Hoover's FBI. How would he respond to an assertion that 'If Dr. King is doing nothing worng, why should he worry about our wiretapping.'

    'I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?'

    This is the most cliched argument that any law enformcemnt officer could ever give. the answer to it is that it's none of my business what you're doing, and that it's not your place to decide what's right or wrong. That's what we have legislators for. There are very good reasons for resisting the erosion of privacy, and one of them is to keep assholes like this out of our lives.

    Of course they'll do something. Take large donations from the lobbyists for those companies to shut up.

    Until they propose legislation, all the grandstanding is really meaningless. Of course, the legislation would probably also be meaningless, since it would allow the corporations to do the same things with a token payment to the commerce department.

    Where Sundance is concerned, you run the filter one way to determine if it wins, and then reverse the good/bad word lists to see if it will have commercial success.

    I'm sure that both of the users of the Itanium are thrilled by this development. They should drop it and use the extra fab capacity to make 8-bit microcontrollers. There's still a market for those.

    ID is an ideological position, and has nothing to do with scientific evidence. The people who advocate it will continue to advocate it, regardless of mountains of evidence.

    By the same token, those who oppose it have also taken an ideological position, and will probably oppose it even if a Made By God sign miraculously appears in the sky in full view of everyone.

    Let's treat this for what it is: a cool scientific discovery with some really fantastic applications.

    I have worn glasses since I was 8 years old, and in college, I started wearing contacts regularly. In seven years of engineering, my prescription has not changed.

    However, I have seriously re-thought how I prioritize my work and social lives, and I no longer spend as many hours at the office as I used to. The surprising part of this is that I now get more work done. Your productivity goes down the longer you work more than forty hours at a time. By limiting my time at the office during all but the most critical of project crunch times, I'm able to focus better, and make fewer mistakes that require rework.

    Also, almost all of my recreation takes place away from the computer now. (Who needs games when you have a motorcycle.)
