We've been doing this for years in Belgium. We pay 3 euro for a desktop pc and 2 euro for a laptop.

    Quote from the organization:

The legislation covers the mandatory take-back of all waste domestic appliances. The recycling contribution makes possible the collection and recycling of waste appliances.

The amount of this contribution varies from product group to product group. It is calculated as a function of the various processes required for recycling. This contribution is used to cover the costs associated with the collection, sorting, transport and recycling of discarded appliances. The amounts (VAT included) vary from 0.1 euro (pocket calculator, alarm clock) to 20 euro (refrigerator or freezer).

  11. Re:SCO, IBM, Linux and evidence on SCO Fails to Produce Evidence · · Score: 1
Why should I pay SCO for a Linux license when they cannot prove that I owe them for one?

Because, they claim that even if they can't prove it you still have to pay ;-) From the SCO Intellectual Property License Linux FAQ:

    14. How can SCO expect me to purchase a license when its case with IBM hasn't been resolved yet? What if SCO loses its case against IBM? Will it reimburse Linux customers who purchased a SCO IP License for Linux?

Some Linux users have the misunderstanding that the SCO IP License for Linux hinges on the outcome of the SCO vs. IBM case. If that case were completely removed, Linux end users would still need to purchase a license from SCO to use the SCO IP found in Linux. The IBM case surrounds mis-use of derivative works of SCO UNIX. It does not change the fact that line-by-line SCO IP code is found in Linux.

In addition to the open-ended key size of Rijndael, after reading the AES Round 1 report, it looks like smart card applications were a key consideration (possible THE key?).

This shouldn't come as a surprise because John Daemen is currently working for ProtonWorld, a Belgian smart card company. Millions of people here in Belgium are using their e-purse smartcards daily to make small payments. I wouldn't be surprised if RijnDael is the main algorithm behind Proton.
