Yes, and it's very hard to read TFA with a stupid 'Take the survey now' popup plastered over it. I hate those.

Does ODF Have a Future?
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
What exactly are you trying to say? ODF will never get there in the 'free' market America has. MS has so much market share AND political influence there that ODF will never work in the USA. Luckily the world is bigger than America (in fact, it's a LOT bigger) and more and more gouvernments around the world are seeing the benefits of open standards. So there is hope for ODF. When the whole world is converted to ODF then maybe America will change too.
I can call you a nerd because you're on slashdot. I'm a nerd as well, and I have been using Linux much to my satisfaction for about ten years now. But if you try Linux with your 'your average secretary or primary school teacher' (I mean average non-technical person) hat on, Linux suddenly isn't so cool anymore. Try Ubuntu for instance. I recently installed that on my computer. It wouldn't change the frequency of my monitor, so I had to use it at 60 Hz. Instant headache guaranteed. That's already enough to wipe it off the harddrive and go look at Apple or MS. And it wouldn't play MP3's. There was no decent movie player in it. And I couldn't install MSN for my teenage daughters. And worst of all, the Sims didn't work on it!
After nearly eight years of being on the verge of a breakthrough, Linux seems more destined than ever to be a force in the server room but little more than a narrow niche and an anomaly on the desktop.
That is exactly the problem with Linux. It's always almost ready dor the desktop. And it will always stay that way as long as there isn't a standard interface and and a good office suite that does MS'.doc format. Sad but true.
I am not claiming that, I asked if that was the case in my first post. Are you sure you're not answering someone elses posts? Some other people said Yanks say "sorcerer's" instead of "philosopher's."
Again you misunderstood me. I didn't claim Americans are ignorant about the Philosopher's stone; I just wondered why they changed the title of the first book for the American market, and if it had something to do with the Philosopher's stone being named differently in America.
Thanks for the clarification. If what you say is true I must say I find that extremely stupid. A philosopher is a wise man, someone who we would call a scientist today. The stone was created by this wise man, not by a sourcerer. AFAIK (I haven't read the book in a while) the stone was not owned by a sourcerer. Voldemort wanted it but that doesn't make it the 'sourcerer's stone' all of a sudden. Very weird that they have translated it like they have.
What the OP is referring to is that the Sorcerer's Stone [wikipedia.org] and the Philosopher's Stone [wikipedia.org] are different names for the same thing, neither of which have anything to do with Harry Potter.
Now that's a novel argument! I doubt very much that the OP had it in mind.
That always puzzled me. Is the Philosopher's Stone always called the Sourcerer's Stone in America? It's not a concept invented by Mrs. Rowling, so you can't just change the name IMO.
Well, that and I can't stand Apple's software on Windows. If you're going to make a Windows app, make a damn Windows app. Don't port an OS X app over to Windows, because not only is the look and feel all wrong but the functionality of "standard" controls is different as well.
As much an Apple fan as I am, I also hate Apple software on Windows. Not only does it look out of place, it Just Does Not Work. Worst of all is the Apple Updater I got with Quicktime at work. Even if I told it to Never even look for new software it would pop up each week, happily telling me there was an update to iTunes, which I didn't even have on my computer at work. So I asked my sysad to remove the Apple software again.
But, to get back on topic, I live in Europe and I have never seen a Zune. I now wonder wether they will introduce the 'old' Zune here at the end of 2007, as a link underneath TFA states, or don't bother with that and start with the new one right away. It's about time we get some real competition for the iPod here.
Those are some very strong allegations. I can't understand why/. soiled its pages with this. The guy didn't even try other machines and other operating systems. No statistics at all. This is the worst 'article' I've seen so far on/., and I have seen some really bad stuff here already. Indeed, as one poster said,/. is becoming more and more like Digg. And that is NOT a compliment, Taco at al.!
I thought it was just me not being fully awake. I tried to read the article, then I thought "WT...?" I skimmed it the second time and stumbled upon the info it tried to get across.

Ah. O well. Better luck next time.

See? Linux sucks for most people.
Shouldn't we be used to that by now?
From TFA: Microsoft has made it easy for Chinese users to purchase legal copies by offering a $3 Windows/Office bundle to Chinese students.
I wouldn't be surprised if they still make a profit even at that low price.

I'm 39 years old.
Ah! I thought you were responding to me! That explains the confusion.
Wow man, he is one cool dude. I wish I had the nerve and stamina to get another Ph.D. at that age.

Read my posts. I did not claim that.
Again you misunderstood me. I didn't claim Americans are ignorant about the Philosopher's stone; I just wondered why they changed the title of the first book for the American market, and if it had something to do with the Philosopher's stone being named differently in America.
That's enlightening, thanks!

I wrote my Ph.D. thesis in that. Waaaay better than Word in many areas. I now use LaTeX, which is even handier once you get the hang of it.
DOA?

Digg is that way --->

This 'research' has much more value if the way Hotmail handles attachments can be compared to Gmail. This is just MS bashing in my eyes now.
I meant: Maybe there are other planets where there really are MANY different forms of life, all based on different chemistries.
