Next Generation Zune Coming for Holiday Season

thefickler writes "Microsoft has confirmed the existence and coming launch of the long rumored Zune 2.0 or 2nd generation Zune, and it appears that Microsoft will expand the Zune family with new styles, sizes, and price points. 'Future Zune products will feature podcasting support and expanded video support. The Zune will also move into other geographic markets when Microsoft feels it has an appealing product to offer those demographics. Perhaps most importantly of all, the representative mentioned that Microsoft will build on the wireless support. Maybe we'll finally have the freedom of synching our digital audio players via wi-fi. The rep didn't mention anything specific about Microsoft's rumored answer to the iPod Shuffle. But interesting rumors from sources considered "reliable" point to a very innovative product.'"

The reason is that in order to limit costs, you will always want to re-use as much of the code you have already developed on operating system A when you port it to operating system B. Things like look, feel and UI standards/guidelines tend to become victims of fiscal reality and marketing concerns. Stuff that gets ported from Windows to OS X sucks on OS X, stuff that was developed on OS X tends to suck when ported to Windows and Java Swing and other portable GUI programs suck everywhere because there are always some bugs on each platform and GUI wise they can only make use of GUI components that are common to all platforms unless you start writing OS specific branches plus the 'look and feel' feature in Java never seems to work out of the box without tweaking. The moment you want to use all the innovative, OS specific components from each OS such as the for example the 'Drawer' feature on OS X you have to solve the problem in some other OS specific way on Windows. That is extra work which is extra costs. Another downside of heavily adapting a portable application to each host OS that you'll also confuse your users because the app will work very differently each time they switch platforms. The basic lesson is that portable GUI apps are always a compromise, you can never make everybody happy and portable apps will always be sucky on some of the platforms they run on. Because they make many more billions of dollars from their existing monopoly. For example:
      • The WWW threatened Windows because browser can be a platform to deploy platform-independent contents and apps. So, Microsoft gave away a free browser. They ended the Netscape threat and bought some time to get their Internet plans in order.
      • The web portals threaten their Internet plan for IE and Windows, so Microsoft was willing to spend billions of dollars to prop up their MSN to wrestle control from Yahoo! and Google.
      • Game consoles become more and more like a computer. They allow users to access the Internet from the living room. This is a direction Microsoft wants for Windows. Sony et al. are a threat, so Microsoft counters this with their XBOX platform. So what if they lose billions of dollars. It's to protect their cash cow, Windows.
      • Microsoft wants to use Windows as the tollbooth between the content producers and the customers. They implement DRM as the highly-touted feature of Windows. Along came Apple with their iPod followed with the iTunes (Music) Store. It's now beyond a threat as DRMed content market is now ruled by Apple with their iPod/iTunes/iTunes Store trio. The success also created an iPod halo, increasing the Mac market share. Microsoft abandoned their PlayForSure strategy and went after iPod. They spent billions of dollars to create Zune and Zune Marketplace to protect their plans for Windows.
See the pattern? They don't do things like wasting cash randomly. They do it to hurt competitors who have the potential to hurt Windows. And why not? They make tons of profit from their monopoly to subsidize these ventures.

The product is essentially a music playing SD card that will plug into any SD slot. The second part of the player is what makes the SD card usable as a digital audio player. That part is a type of sleeve that'll allow the user to control the music and plug in headphones for putting that music playing goodness to work.
OK, first off... why would anyone want a player that plugs into an SD slot? Doesn't that limit which computers you can use it with, or require you to buy a card reader? What a pain... even if they include an SD reader, it would still be so much more convenient to just plug into USB, like the old shuffle. At least the new shuffle's weird USB design avoids having an ugly USB connector, but with an SD interface on the MS player, you still have to have a part that can stick into an SD slot.

Second of all... it allows users to control music, and you can plug headphones into it... these are innovative features? The shuffle is barely usable because that's all it has. So how is that an extra feature for the zuffle? The sleeve? Does that mean that the SD connector slides out of the body of the player? What does it mean? And where is the innovation being talked about?

Honestly, I wouldn't ever buy a shuffle because it would drive me nuts. It would be funny if this part of TFA were true, that MS really wants a zuffle. The innovative part of the shuffle is Apple's gamble about whether or not people would want such a stripped-down player. But that's been done before, so would the Zuffle ever be anything other than a me too product?

I think Apple is vulnerable in the Mp3 player market right now. The iPod does not have great battery life, and it still scratches easily. If they don't release a new version this holiday season, I will think about getting a Zune 2.0. I read that Zune 1.0 had great battery life and was well made, the problem was the DRM. If they fix the DRM, then Zune 2.0 might well be the superior device.

The Zune is underrated, and I'll probably buy a Zune v.2 but I'm not sure if they will be popular simply because Microsoft doesn't know how to market. The thing about the iPod and Zune is the way the companies handle the users' experience, iPod does a lot to make the experience enjoyable for the user and hides all the stuff that the user shouldn't do. Installation is pretty straight forward. If you want to copy a file the options are grayed out etc.

On the Windows related player products I've seen and I am assuming the Zune you get similar - some extended install session - a wierd DRM connection/verification process proving that you are you, then pop-ups with warnings, etc. before you can do anything. And I bet lots of warnings about songs not being squirt able, or that they are about to expire in XX hours, etc. So the user is constantly reminded of what can't be done and not just presented with what can be.

Microsoft does well is lots of dialog pop-up boxes, warnings confirmations, etc. Many of Apple's programs adjust the programs to not interrupt the user experience.
