I know it's useless to whine about moderators but I do it anyway. I find it really pathetic that when you say something here that might be interpreted as perhaps negative about Apple, you get modded Troll. I don'think there is one critical commment that I made that has something to do with Apple that was not modded Troll. The above comment was obviously a joke, I even put a smily in there, $*#*#%!! Grow up, people.
Wow, do they like this new iMac! It almost looks like Apple payed for the article:-) I like the term IntelliMac. Is that an ivention of NYT, or did someone else come up with it?
I did some calculations once, and I found out that even buying one of those boxes that you can plug your powered devices in and has an on/off switch, costs more than you will ever save in electricity using such a thing. And don't forget the energy it takes to make one of those!
But many devices, even when turned 'off', still consume power because the transformator is placed between the on/off switch and the wall pug. I think that is really completely ridiculous. My CD player uses 2W when switched off, for crying out loud. Even my TV in standby does better!
One thing that will help to get people motivated for a carrier in science is pay them a normal salary. I don't understand why my sister-in-law, who works for a pharmaceutical company basically selling stuff, earns about twice as me AND has a company car. I also know a few people who emigrated from Holland to Switzerland because they get better pay there.
...is useless. I mean, the only good campaign is one that shows what working in science is all about: doing boring repetitive work, surrounded by weird, very brainy people. OK, now I exaggerate a bit, but this is many a scientists' almost daily experience. I live in Holland and I have never seen a campaign for science that was to the point and appealing to the target group (young people of around 15 years of age who have to choose what type of work they wantto do). And I wonder: is this really so bad? People who fall for a 'Science is hefty fun!' campaign will most likely be extremely disappointed when they find out the real thing, and people who are already interested in a scientific career will study science anyway. And they are the best you can get. So in a way, campaigning will only get you people who are not really motivated and would be more useful to society in another job.
In my country (The Netherlands) downloading for your own use is legal (sorry - the links you get are mostly in Dutch). I hope it stays this way for a long time; this prevents moronic laws as the one described in the article to enter Europe for a long time to come. Hopefully.
I realize many of my recent posts are sarcastic answers to extremely obvious questions posted on slashdot. That makes me wonder if slashdot is more about more novice geeks (oh boy, 64-bit! twice as fast!), than specialized people who work in their respective fields.
Well, you can be specialized and work in a specific field without knowing much about computers. I mean 'nerd' != 'computer geek'...
Why do you answers these posts instead of just ignore them? Apparently there are people on/. thet find these posts interesting. Let them be, I'd say;/. is not only for computer-savvy people.
This whole rootkit thing surely plays a role in my deciding not to buy this thing, but I never liked Sony's products actually. This thing too has a memory stick, which makes it more expensive than necessary. I really want a device like this but I want to be able to choose the manufacturer of the memory, and I want to be able to upload any.pdf file to it without having to convert it first. O, and I also want to be able to read ASCII text files on it, because I'd like to use it to read the books you can download from the Gutenberg project.
posing gaming addiction as a symptom of a larger problem
I know that all the entertainment I look for is to get away from the real world as far as possible. I mean, some people like to read travel stories or trade stock un their spare time. I like to play adventure games like Myst or The Longest Journey, and I like Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. I think I have a "larger problem." This world is just not interesting enough for me, or maybe so scary that I want to get away. What I mean to say is that to me it seems very likely that some people can develop a game addiction just like other people start drinking or using drugs.
Taleyarkhan et al. must be very happy that they were not dismiised as crooks the way Fleischmann et al. (the dudes who published the first paper on cold fusion) were. I still think it's ridiculous they way they were treated.

You don't even have to play it. Just selecting it is enough. I like this new feature, but I think I'm the only one here:-)

the idea is to contain it to the point that its impact on in-boxes is minor. /i.
Zero would be nice. Thank you.
What do you mean? I've looked all over the /. page and I can't find them.

My TV uses less than 1 W in standby mode. And I can 'switch it on' with the remote.

If you have been outside for 50 years it is more likely you want 40 kB storage instead of 40 GB.
Grrr, something went wrong with the link. I meant this one .

Yes. I know quite a few people who have been using Aldi computers (Medion) for years without anything breaking down. That hardware is really good.
139 euros.
I actually bought one of these today at Aldi (a German store that also has shops in Holland). 250 GB for 139 euros!
Come on man, Apples never crash. Everybody knows that!

You copied that from the dupe! Nice way to improve your karma ;-)
Simple. It was just the droplet that made the bucket overflow.
Right. What's wrong with my website?

Exactly. Good riddens I say.
