I would very much like to have such a thing. I love Victorian literature, so I can download all of it from Gutenberg and read it from such a device. But after the rootkit debacle I decided never to buy Sony if I can help it, so...
Seriously, why the fuck do you think anything government does is going to stop someone from shotgunning your door open?
I don't think that at all, but the fact that there are laws against robbing a house means that the robbers can be punished afterwards. Of course the government can not and will not protect your house 24/7. That's what locks and so on are for. But if they fail it's nice to know that in theory the people who robbed your house can be punished.
But I wonder: you often see cloud formation when a sonic boom is about to occur. Could it be that there was something in the air already that rained down from these clouds? Something that didn't come from the alleged meteor?
Putting Linux on a Mac is a waste of time. All the GNU tools can be run on OS X so you have to have to use it for some very specific task to justify putting Linux on it, and in that case I think you'd better go for an Intel PC (not a Mac:-) ).
I must say I don't understand at all what this is about. The article shows a strange picture surrounded by some fuzzy marketeer speach. Can anybody explain why this is the next best thing?
I hope you're wrong. Ever since I became an Apple junky some time last year life has been so exciting for me! I sure wish Steve announces something Intel! That will hopefully increase Apple's market share. A version of Pages that supports equations would also be nice... Ooo, I can't wait 'til jan. 10!
That's all very cool, but many people are not so careful with their phones as with their other equipment. How many g's can these drives take? Can I drop my phone on a concrete floor without losing data?
My ISP regularly sends me emails about new MS vulnerabilities and what to do about them. I chuck them immediately because I use Windows only for playing games, but the fact that they send these mails means that a lot of Joe Sixpacks get to know about the dangers and can do something about it. I think that the main reason Joe Sixpack doesn't use non-MS software is that when something on a computer is more difficult than 'click here', 90% of the people doesn't even try. And another thing: people stick to what they know. That's very hard to change.
100. Musical instrument shops must pay an annual royalty to cover shoppers who perform a recognisable riff before they buy, thereby making a "public performance".
Unlocking your phone isn't illegal (at least in Holland it isn't). There are plenty of people who can do it for you for a small fee. Some can even upgrade your phone's firmware for you.
This is slightly off-topic, but a nice story. I work in a research group at a university as a researcher. In our group we have a system administrator who makes sure that all our desktop machines keep running Windows smoothly. On my first day at work I told him I use Linux at home. His response was: "O, would you like to have an administrator password for your computer?" Which I gratefully accepted of course. And until now (two.5 years later) I never misused it so we're still on good terms:-)
Exactly, I would have been really surprised if they had complied to the EU's wishes. And I will be surprised if Vista is better concerning security than XP. But hey, this is Slashdot...:-)
I think it's time to make computers less power-hungry. I have a 1300 MHz Duron with an nVidia geForce 5700 and two harddisks. That thing uses 145 W when it's doing nothing, and that is without the monitor. I use less power to light all the rooms in my, admittedly small, house! Even my big wide-screen CRT TV doesn't use that much power when it's on. I can't believe we can't do better. With better, I mean make computers that use less power.
What I find interesting is: a few years ago the fastest processor you could buy ran at about 3.1 GHz or so. Now it's around 3.5 GHz. Ten years ago, the processing speed was doubled every few years. What is keeping the speed around 3.5 GHz? Is it the processor itself, or the electronics around it that can't be made faster? Or is there no demand for faster processors? (I can hardly imagine that!)

I'm already fine with locking my front door.
Then don't come whining when somebody blasts out your door with a riot gun and plunders your house when you're on vacation.
A 3 AM phone call is different from a post to blogger.com calling me a jerk.
Yes, but I guess nothing will happen to the poster unless you start complaining about him/her to the authorities.
What about a fuel cell? That'd be a cool Apple-thing to do.
Hehe, that was funny.

But not as we know it.
Pratchetttian humour! Keep it on!
I guess they will fire up the spaceship from a safe orbit around the moon, or Mars or something else far away.

Yes, but for that money you have the coolest, styliest mouse ever, because it says 'Apple' on the bottom!

Wow, with video's even! Nice!

Little things like this make me mad.
You must spend a hell of a time moving all your data to new computers, and installing software. I sure hope you don't bill that time :-)

This has nothing to do with Microsoft
I thought IE was a Microsoft product.

Swap out the PSU and CPU fan for new stuff. If you have any case fans, the same applies.
I know that. The 145 W I use is with clean fans. I cleaned them before measuring, after I put the video card in.
