  1. Amazon's book selection... on Geek Books as Holiday Gifts · · Score: 1
Amazon's selects aren't that great. I was loooking at their site earlier today and their "best new movies" was a pretty lackluster list.

This gift-finder is a bit more personal - but I'll still procrastinate until Christmas Eve.

    Bring on the crowds...

  2. Private Jets? Rock stars? on Green Plants for Mars Mission · · Score: 1

The article said that when astronauts visit, they're treated like rock (pun intended?) stars, and have their own private jets.

How much do astronauts make, by the way, and once a 'naut, does NASA take care of you for life? Who supports their lavish lifestyle?

  3. Re:Such an amazing and atypical slashdot article on Latest Chernobyl Motorcycle Photos · · Score: 1

There are about 20 before/after photos of Chernobyl here including one with the American Pioneer robot that was sent in to take a look; obnoxiously flying the Stars & Stripes...

Interestingly, the plant was still operational until 2000 - here's a history of all the reactors. *

Unit 1: shut down on 11/30/96.
Unit 2: A fire at Unit 2 resulted in its shutdown in 10/91.
Unit 3: Shut down on 15 December 2000.
Unit 4: destroyed in the 4/86 disaster.

People have pointed to this accident as one of the hallmark turnarounds in reactor safety, but I don't think the Russian mindset changed post-1986.

From NTI: "Units 1 and 3 were shut down in 1991 after an accident at the similar Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant in Russia, but were restarted in December and October of 1992, respectively. The restart decision was taken against the advice of the Ukrainian State Committee for Nuclear and Radiation Safety."

Under Communism, the Russians couldn't build a safe reactor, under capitalism, they couldn't afford to shut it down. Choose your poison, boys!

  4. Re:the Kaleidescap System on Suggestions for a DVD Video on Demand System? · · Score: 1

How can they make this legally? Don't they have to decrypt the DVD to store it digitally; violating the DMCA? They're based in Canada so that could be the solution (kind of like buying hi-flow toilets and shower heads in Canada for use in an American house)

I wonder if it's region locked, though. If not, it would be a lot easier to expand the collection.

  5. Stock photography on The Most Famous Geek in IT · · Score: 2, Insightful

while this guy's photo is nearly as popular as that asian kid with the headphones (it seems cutting edge), there are some stock photography rules that ensure such a thing won't happen

this image is royalty free which means once you buy it, you can use it anywhere for anything. The other category is rights-managed. For a rights managed photo you specify a category that the photo is used for, where it will be placed, and for how long it will be used. A quote is generated based on that by Getty/Photodisc, etc.

You can reserve a rights managed photo for exclusive usage in a specific category (e.g. I.T. - Computers) so this type of thing won't happen. It's not that this was an unfortunate coincidence, the companies were just too cheap to find a photo they could reserve and call their own. Any other company in that industry would not be sold usage rights.

Expensive, but it prevents these threads!

Hey, if they'll insure an '87 Chevy, then why not a Neutrino detector? My bet would have been on the Chevy to kick off first.

Did you hear the one about the guy who bought fire insurance for his cigar, and then smoked it? It's true.

  7. Where would Lewinsky be?? on Do Digital Photos Endanger History? · · Score: 1
You're right - an article I read in the NYTimes on digital vs. analog photography covered that same ground. The photographer kept good notes and had a good overall knowledge of his collection - but that is behaviour!

    Behaviour is independent of technology

This photographer obviously would never loose a picture, but relied solely on his memory to find the picture. That's the way he is, be it analog or digital. A digital photographer who had the same habits as this man not only could have found the picture, but found it quicker, as he would naturally create a database of photos (e.g. "search: Bill Clinton, hugging, overweight, woman, beret")

How can you correlate technology with organization? I may have a state of the art computer (200 mhz) but all my files are basically in the same directory. I wish I could blame that on my computer.

  8. Re:iPod CAN be used as transfer medium on Slashback: Drives, Pods, OEMs · · Score: 1

From the Apple iPod PDF Faq:

    "To transfer music between your
computers, or to add songs to iPod from both systems, you can selectively drag and drop
songs, albums, or playlists between iPod and either computer using the manual update mode."

Thus, not only can you transfer music, but you can add songs so long as you are in the manual update mode.
