  1. Now Amazon can sell AWS prime. If you are a susbcriber of AWS prime we will check "Twice" before removing your servers. That should boost the profit somewhat

  2. There you go trying to analyze a TV show to show its logical. Its fiction folks and not even Science Fiction. Its more like fantasy set in the future. Its not supposed to be logical.

  3. AWS should use the cloud, that way when one server goes down the load is picked up seamlessly by another one with no downtime ...... Oh Wait. Never Mind

In a global economy things are not isolated on a country by country level. When an Indian IT worker rises into the middle class and can now buy iPhones it generates revenue for Apple which means jobs for folks back in Austin who work in AppleCare software division. Thats IT. These folks can now afford cars so it means GM gets to sell cars (made in India but designed in Detroit hence engineering jobs in Detroit), Coca Cola gets to sell coke marketed using campaigns created in the US so generating jobs in Marketing in New York, heck they can now afford meat hence import Chickens from US generating jobs on farms.

You need to stop thinking in narrow economies and start thinking in larger sense. There is inherently nothing different between Americans and Indians. So a situation where Americans keep having a vastly superior standard of living is not sustainable.

  5. Permatemping would be to keep them as contractor even after you are sure they are working out and I agree its bad.
Hiring as contractor for 3 months means they still get paid unlike industries like Law and Stock Brokers where interns get paid a pittance just to get a chance.
Some places interns even pay the company to get a chance to try out for a job.

  6. I think you are creating a strawman. I am not advocating giving a problem which is not on Stackoverflow in an interview. In fact I am advocating against it as 1 hour is too little to attack anything non trivial.
At the same time if I am giving something trivial I want to see the thought process rather than googling skills.
Hence bubblesort and no net resources.
I do not expect the person to remember bubblesort but its simple enough that it can be deduced from basic logic.
And I am not looking for syntax. Heck everyone uses the IDE for that nowadays. Back in the day when we had multi hour builds run remotely it was critical not to have syntax errors. Now when you can compile in seconds at the click of a button syntax is not important, semantics still count btw

The Bay area is not representative of the US. Its much more like India as its hand to mouth but outside of Bay Area in the midwest and the East coast people in IT jobs easily have huge houses, multiple SUVS, ATVs, boats and tons of shit. And they expect to keep affording the same even if the work they do can be done at the same quality from across the world.
Believe me not many jobs are getting outsourced to India from the Bay Area. These jobs were first outsourced to the midwest and Texas and only then sent to India.
In fact many of them are being reshored and brought back to places like Phoenix.
BTW I call bullshit on the original story. If they have people working at 110K they wont be saving much as even H1Bs are paid 100K + on average in the Bay Area. The outsourcing is probably to improve the quality of service as companies who have been doing this at 100s of companies have many efficiencies and best practices that a small dept doesnt have.

There is nothing enforcing it in India as well other than the fact that the employee will not get references. He/she will forfeit bonds (these are generally on fresh graduates whom the companies train for 6 months in classrooms in return for 2 year bonds as many Indian colleges dont produce work ready engineers). Also as a hiring manager if I see people with less than 1 year at a company I want a good explanation and if I dont get one we move on. Hiring takes up too much time and effort to hire someone who jumps every 6 months. But legally? Even 1 day notice is not required from either side. Its just that companies know they need to hire from the market and if they fire on a 1 day notice few people will join them when they want to hire. And people know pissing off an ex boss is not good as people do move around and the ex boss you screwed by leaving in the middle of a project with no notice may be a hiring manager at some future opportunity.

Good part of this is when companies want to do RIF they will give the person 3 months notice and then ask them not to come to office. If the company wants to reduce headcount immediately they give 3 months salary in cash. (While this does not save money directly sometimes companies need to hire in a certain skill but hiring is on freeze till the bench of folks in other skills is cleared)

The point of having someone solve it without net resources is that when they are working they will run into problems where the answer is not on Stackoverflow and you need to be able to solve from first principles. Obviously as these are future problems you are going to run into you dont have one ready to use as the screening question in an interview and even if you did have a current problem (say from your current project) most such problems are non trivial and cannot be solved in the 1 hour available for a tech interview plus even if they solve it you dont have a way of knowing if they solved it right.

The point of going with a well known problem solution is that you are checking their way of solving problems. If they can come up with one of the standard solutions the library designers have already come up with you can have some confidence they will be able to come up with solutions to unknown problems they will face in the future. And by using something as simple as bubblesort you can have the coding exercise done in 10-15 minutes and spend the rest of the hour on other types of questions to check fit and attitude.

Food in this budget is 200 dollars per person and 50 dollars eating out a month. You would spend more than 200 dollar per person per month in Europe. I did.

I have lived in Europe. Food is expensive but rents are low, no need to pay for health insurance, no need to save for college, usable subsidized public transport , good pensions, 2 months of vacation a year and still the tax rate is only 10% more than what people in California pay.

For 10% more people's major costs are reduced
rent(Germany actually fines landlords if their houses are empty so they rent at reasonable rates)
    health Insurance (Medicare for all)
college (if your kid is smart a place is assured though you may have to spend on extra classes to round off the resume)
transport(no need to take cars everywhere)
Expensive vacations (2 months instead of 15 days means you can afford to trade money for time when on vacation and use the cheaper slower options or avoid peak times)

The only thing Europeans end up spending more are electronics, entertainment and food.

Europeans are having a much better life except for the weather which sucks.
If I could tolerate snow I would have stayed there.

And what is most galling is that Europeans can afford the welfare state without the taxes killing all economic activity because they dont have to pay for an Army. Because an Army the US Army paid with our taxes is sitting in Europe providing security.

Washington may have thrown the British out but the Europeans have still found a way to live in luxury off the sweat of the colonies.
