Non food groceries covers cleaning supplies, toileteries, any one time purchases like books, online movies, shoes, movie tickets etc.

Eating out for a family of 4 easily costs 60 dollars at a fast casual restaurant. Movies are 12 dollars a ticket.

Also 1000 dollar a month for food is not excessive it works out to 250 per person so 4 dollar per meal per person. Milk is 4$ a gallon. 6 Sausages will cost you 5$. Food is extremely expensive in California say compared to Texas.

Typically by using Costco you can get down to 800 a month but that balances out with eating out once a week to get to 1000 a month.

Even with this budget note there is no extra to put into an emergency fund, save for college or save for a downpayment. The extra classes for kids become a necessity so that they can get a scholarship to college for you wont be able to fund them as you are going paycheque to paycheque . So you cut having vacations, avoid going to the dentist ,dont max your 401K so you have money to pay for Piano/Soccer lessons.

For many in the valley who are on work visas the spouse is not allowed to work legally and since software engineers are educated folks with respect for the law the spouse doesn't work illegally. And once you have a kid, the second kid is kind of necessary as an only child grows up to be self centered and spoilt unless you want software engineers to not have kids at all.

Even if the wife did work all her income would be taxed at the highest bracket so the effective taxation on the wifes income would be 50%(FICA+28% Fed+9% California). So a 60000 USD job would fetch 30000 take home so around 2500 a month. 2 kids would cost 2000 in childcare so a net 500 which would get blown in the additional eating out which happens when both parents are working and too tired to cook.

So a nonworking wife and 2 kids are not a luxury.

  9. Yes. They are replaced with 70 years of working at a series of 3 year jobs with no scope of a retirement and you dying while at work. With salaries no longer supporting living and saving for retirement at the same time and job breaks eating up savings and emergency funds retirement is obsolete. Unless you want to move to India in your old age and live on Social Security (India has cheap healthcare which is the main cost for old people)

  10. As robots do more of the productive work we have three options - the ot of work workers eventually revolt and kill the robot owners and destroy the robots, the unemployed get employed in govt as robot safety inspectors, the robot owners are taxed at a very high rate and the amount is used to provide Basic income to most people so they can either work on something which interests them but doesnt pay or they can play video games all day.
Currently we seem to be going down the path of option 2 but I like option 3 better. Of course if we are really unlucky it could go option 1.

  11. I program Bugs into robots. Greater job security. Robots who try to fix robots cannot even imagine deliberate bugs.

Just because I hire a cleaning service to clean our office toilets does not make the cleaners my employees and me responsible for their pay. I pay what is in the contract. Its the job of the vendor signing the contract to make sure all laws are followed.

  15. No wonder more and more men are choosing to be gay. And dont tell me people are born Gay or Hetero. Its not digital its Analog. Everyone is somewhere on the scale from 90% hetero to 90% gay. While the 90% hetero guy would never turn to men even after multiple hearbreaks and the 90% gay guy would never turn to a woman even in mediaval Europe (he would just become a monk or priest) there are those who are 60-40 or 40-60. Depending on how hostile society becomes to hetero relationships and accepting of homo relationships more and more people will choose to go the gay way. Its way less complicated (men understand men much better than women). With how hostile Silicon Valley or ManJose has become to men (the lopsided men-women ratio makes dating really difficult) I would say event the 70-30 or 80-20 are temptem to act upon their 30 and 20 natures.

In fact India is not at 2.1 children/woman fecundity so essentially replacement rate though the population will keep growing through 2050 as the large mass of young people have kids but after that it will start falling. The best way to feed the children is by generating jobs for their parents rather than generating lavish lifestyles for NGO employees who spend most of your donations on First class flights and 5 star hotel stays and advertizing.

Also better access to porn. Its proven in multiple studies that countries which watch more porn have lesser sex (the standards become just too high and the real thing is dissapointing). The mobile revolution in India has increased the access to porn so birth rates should be going down soon.

The solution to most of these problems is cheaper electricity- Metro trains, electric cars, cheaper electricity=more industry=more jobs= less homeless people, more industry=more taxes=better enforcement of construction norms.

Anything which drives up the price of electricity like the Renewables drivel is worsening the problems.
