OK The made fool off comment was kind of out of line but I got a little pissed when my original comment got modded Troll. Now I did mention that if your work is phone related (I said telemarketer but I guess it will cover support and other phone based work) a cell phone is not enough. But for the vast majority of people working out of conventional offices you dont use your cellphone at work. Mostly people (by people I mean Slashdot readers ergo techies) work at a desk and have office phones, email or IM for work communication. So if you are spending a lot of time on the cell during the day your boss might have a problem with that. IT support people who have to actually move around for hardware installation might be an exception but in that case they generally have office provided cellphones. So for all practical purposes for the average techie a cell phone is good enough.
Itunes is marketed to a net savvy target market. Vonage is marketed to the grandmas and grandpas who are more likely to be misled. Also I dont need broadband service to listen to Itunes music just to download and I can do that at a hundred different places(office library coffeeshop public wifi) besides my home. I am not a fan of landlines ; in fact I do very well with just my cellphone and Time Warner. So having ditched landlines going back to something like Vonage looks like a backward step. Now if Vonage was to provide VOIP over public WIFI and sell us the dual mode (GSM/VOIP) handsets at loss leader costs I would be willing to do business with them but pay for a landline??? You must be crazy:)
I agree both of them are similar. However I basically think the having to pay for phone service thing belongs in the same era as B and W TV and VCRs. In Austin almost everywhere I go I am able to pick up free wifi. Samsung has already released cell phones which can switch from GSM to WIFI on the fly when they find a network. A lot of cities are planning to roll out public WIFI so when I can use voip wireless from a cellphone for free (only cost is buying the handset) why should I pay for phone service? In the transition period while this rolls out and becomes commonplace I want use a service which is free most of the time and has no user lock in and Skype meets that criteria much better than Vonage.
Most households also have cellphones and most of the services you mentioned are provided by cellphones anywyay or by a decent answeriing machine. The cheaper long distance calls are not competitive against nationwide cell plans anyway and for international calls SKYPE is way cheaper
In Answer to your question:-The same kind of idiot who is the target market for Vonage i.e. Those who want to use a real phone instead of a headset plugged into a computer. Vonage is targetting the grandmas and grandpas and most of them dont even know what broadband is. It is definitely deceptive marketing. BTW I hope you have heard of cordless headsets and handsets for voip phones. Samsung even has a cellphone which can be used in dual mode for gsm/voip so you dont need a headset to use free VOIP
Okay too many people here who have wasted money on Vonage and dont want to admit they have been made fools of. As for all the features 3 way calling , caller ID blah blah blah you get those with any decent cell phone provider. Me ? I personally dont have a landline and havnt had one for years. I do have Time Warner Broadband and combined with my T-Mobile family plan I find I have no need for a landline. For 60 dollar a month I get 500 minutes on the plan. Same rates for USA and Canada . Also ulimited nights and weekends. I have had morons tell me 500 minutes is not enough. Now unless you are unemployed or a telemarketer I couldnt imagine spending more than 500 minutes on the phone during daytime(nights and weekends are free remember) Who has the time??? Another set of people tell me I should have a landline so I can call 911 . My cell phone already provides e911 and even if it didnt Vonage is no better. So why the heck would I need Vonage. The only thing I dont get on my cell phone is affordable international service and for that Skype is way way cheaper than Vonage. Vonage is a fad. Wont be around in 2 years.
I mean they advertise that you can have unlimited phone calls for 19.95 but never mention in their advertisements that you need to shell out another 40 dollars for cable internet. At that price phone packages are competitive . Now people say most people already have broadband so I shouldnt count that in the cost but in that case why shouldnt I just use Skype which is free ? Charging a monthly fee basically for providing a handset is definitely a scam
Japan had one big advantage over India . They never let themselves be colonized at the height of imperialism. Even when they finally became a colony of the US it was after a long war which had taught the Americans fear and respect for their colonial subjects. In contrast when the British came to India , India was going through a pretty bad period of Muslim colonization and Hindu resistance with the result that India was a patchwork of small Hindu and Muslim states each fighting each other and not having any sense of national identity. In fact the current India is not really a nation state in the modern sense. Places like the Northeast have always been more part of South East Asia than India while places like Pakistan and Afghanistan which had been the nurseries of Hindu culture are overrun by Muslims and no longer part of India. The amazing thing is India stays together instead of breaking into 10s of states like Africa. Comparing it with a homogenous state like Japan is patently unfair. Despite all this if India is managing to launch satellites its very creditable.
Also the cheap shot about nuclear weapons versus development is not really fair. India had the theoretical knowledge for nukes well before anyone else. The basic equations for nuclear physics are the Bose-Einstein equations invented by J C Bose an Indian scientist and published jointly with Einstein( In the racist academia of 1930s an unknown Indian scientist could not get even path breaking discoveries published until Einstein recognized his genius and offered to copublish). So India could have been working on nuclear tech as soon as Independence i.e. 1947 and probably beat even the French to the punch. However the Indian government made a concious decision not to work on nuclear research and to concentrate on development. However after being defeated by China in 1962 and with the explosion of the Chinese nuclear weapon India was left with no choice and had to start a nuclear weapon program and within the decade they had the bomb in 1972.
Its easy to say money should only be spent on development but one should understand the bigger picture. India lives in a very hostile neighbourhood and sometimes Guns have to come before Butter.
Besides the nuclear and space programs are a way of having opportunities for highly educated and intelligent Indian scientists else they will all emigrate to US and Western Europe. Once the top scientists leave even the other parts of the technological infrastructure (the part related to development) tends to collapse.
So just like the US government spends money on University research and Nasa the Indian government spends money on ISRO. Call it welfare for techies but its a necessity
Firstly your facts are wrong 800 million Indians do not speak English as a primary language. There are regional languages. However the point I was making 300 million do speak English as their primary language as in they do most of their daily work/education in English. Secondly while English is an official language of India it is NOT an official language in USA and only one of two in Canada so including North America and not including India does not make sense. BTW if you go to the southern states of US or to Quebec in Canada you will have difficulty in communicating if all you can speak is English Britain might have given rise to the language but the destiny of this language is now in the hand(maybe throats) of those who speak it and by and large the largest group is from India. I do get the fact that your post is not exactly on this point but I find it irritating when people make false assumptions about the world.
Where the plates are pusing against each other mountains are rising. Where they are pulling apart trenches are opening up. But that is kind of besides the point. Even if no subduction takes place who the heck is going to go into a deep ocean trench ? And if they can get there they probably know radioactivity when they see it.
I would love to put the politicians and government bureaucrats wasting public money on these repositories to be taken and dumped into a trench. Then maybe we can get onto real issues.
These are th kind of kangaroo projects dreamed up by PhDs in lingusitics and history whose lifes work is not worth a rat's ass otherwise and who would be starving on asst. professor salaries otherwise.
I mean what the heck is wrong with just taking the waste on a ship and sending it on a round the world voyage and every 1 mile you dump a kilo of the waste into the ocean. Given the size of the ocean the waste would get diluted down to background levels in 10 mins
Problem solved. But no!! We have to build Yucca and WIPP. Otherwise how else we justify those huge salaries for the nuclear ministry people and those huge donations for the Greenpeace nuts.
I couldnt help notice that you mentioned 3 major english speaking regions but left out India. Granted India has other languages too but all educated people speak English that makes it around 300 million English speakers. I guess only the US comes close to that figure and Ireland?? Dont they speak Irish? Next you will be counting France as an English speaking country
Google is a monopoly on the internet now. They are too big and dangerous. I kind of like the Judges idea of having 3 microsofts one each for OS, Business software and everything else.
I say we breakup google into 5 companies one each for google search, gmail, google earth , google video and everyhting else. Aslo force Google to make their code open source and their search engine available for license to any competitor
What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander
With the IT boom India has become a two paced society. When you are working as a software engineer in India you are not part of the middle class; you are part of the ultra elite and you can do what you want. Think Martha's vineyard. Do you think they are bothered by whether conservatives rule the US or Liberals. When you are that rich in comparison to the general population you can do what you want.
Amen Brother!! It isnt enough that we have been doing the hard physical labour while they run the family however they want;now they want to take away what little self worth we have and replace us with machines. Oppose cloning and sperm banks or men are going to become extinct. On a more serious note physiologically women are tougher as is evidenced by the higher infant survival rates and life expectancy of women. Men are like sports cars . We seem to be stronger but can die very easily. Women are like Dakotas. They seem slow but not much can knock them out. I personally think patriarchial society developed out of an inferiority complex and a sense of self preservation. I am pretty sure in early times a lot of matriarchial societies would have developed and in the short term they would have been stronger as they wouldnt have to live by the whims of men who pretty much think with their balls. But soon these societies died out because men do think with their balls and would not accept living in such societies even when it was a better society. So its always not enough to be better others have to accept it too. Kind of like its not enough that you believe American programmers are better; management has to agree with you.
Most Indians get paid more than that anyway. Most of my friends in India sre pulling down 1.5 to 1.6 Million Indian Rupees that works out to 35-40K yearly for a country where the cost of living is about 1/5th of US. My advice to you is if you really like IT go to India. There are lot of US college students doing internships in Indian IT companies and it is a growing trend. You can really have a much better standard of living and continue to work on IT instead of being forced over to the dark side of management. India has a pretty liberal work visa regime.
Sure Haryana is HAR Delhi DEL Uttar Pradesh is UP Himachal Pradesh is HP Madhya Pradesh is MP Karnataka is KAR
O did you mean states in the USA?
I will learn those when you can tell me how many states are there in your country of origin and I mean Italy,Ireland,England or wherever your Grandpa came from unless you are Native American in which case I am really surprised you are rich enough to be on the net
What planet are you living on? Most medical studies are done on poor starving students. Who else would risk it? Students are young hence optimistic and also desperate for cash. Havn't you seen Girls Gone Wild?? On a more serious note it makes sense to take healthy volunteers as their bodies can tolerate the abuse and recover pretty well. Nobody is turning them into cripples just like Astronauts who come back from 6 month stays are not crippled for life. They will just need some time and painful exercise to get back the bone and muscle. Stop acting like Fox news and sensesationalizing everything
This is not so ridiculous as it sounds. NASA is actually starting a study soon to see the effects of staying in bed . As part of this study partcipants will have to stay in bed for 90 days including using bedpans to do your stuff. They will not be allowed to even tilt their head up only turn over for when a nurse gives them a sponge bath. Participants get paid 17000 dollars for this. They have to be in the 25-35 age group and in peak physical condition as NASA expects a significant amount of bone loss and muscle atrophy. Further their is a danger that all the calcium leaching out of the bones can cause kidney stones as well as the lack of activity can create a pre-diabetic state. Please also note the study has been scheduled to coincide with summer vacations so if you want to do a really interesting internship this summer NASA is the place to be.
The main reason for signing the deal is scale. India has nuclear reactors and nuclear scientists but they are very few in number. At the same time India wants to raise the proportion of electricity from nukes from 3% currently to 20% in 10 years. Thats why the deal is being signed with the assumption the Americans will come in and install hundreds of reactors . Given the serious shortage of trained Indian nuclear personnel I doubt it would be possible to thoroughly check the installations and it would mostly be on trust. It basically comes down to the fact that India needs a lot of nuclear scientists and technicians but not enough come out of Indian colleges so they are outsourcing to the US where there are huge numbers of out of work trained nuclear professionals . The reason for this is twofold In India because of the software boom almost all students study software nowadays and there is a serious shortage of Engineers in all other fields. In the US a huge core of nuclear professionals was created during the cold war but they dont have work as no new nuke plants have been built since 3 Mile Island and even most military nuke projects have been cut. Also while a nuke plant cant go critical like a bomb being able to shutdown 20% of electirc power and have 100s of 3 mile Islands at the command of software is still frightening unless the software can be trusted completely.
I wonder if India is insisting on the source code for the control software for the new nuclear reactors to be sold under the new nuke deal. If not America could switch off the reactor control at any time and nuke India without even having to launch missiles
1)Kind of like after the Germans taught the Americans how to build cars they went off and built better cars no wait American cars are still pretty crappy.
2)OJ Simpson Anyone?
3)Indians can innovate. What do you call creating a business model where most of your work comes from a high living cost country so you can charge high rates but you do it in a low living cost country so your costs are lower. Thats real innovative
4)And the point is? Decisions made by an American programmer are different from decisions made by an Indian programmer How?
5) Yes the reason is most of the wealth of India was looted over 3 centuries of colonialism but then again the Indians are getting rich again. There was a time when 4 centuries back when 80% of world GDP was Indian and Chinese and we are going back to the same. Yes of course it affects how people work. When people have had to struggle to get into a well paying career they take their job seriously unlike somebody in the US who has had the job handed to him on a platter
6) Yes their is an overhead in crossing cultural boundaries. That is why companies offer lower rates so it is worth taking the trouble to cross those boundaries
7) Nobody in their right mind outsources critical areas oly non core competencies
8) If your attitude is managers suck no wonder they want to outsource your job. Whether you like it or not the world is set up where people with soft skills rule people with technical skills. Just face the facts. If you dont like it you should have spent more time at frat parties in college to develop the soft skills needed for management
9) The reason people need to outsource is that the US has an unsustainably high standard of living. When a plumber or Garbage truck driver in the US earns more than a rocket scientist in other countries somewhere the extra amount of money has to be brought in. If Engineers and IT people want the same benefits of being American that Garbage truck drivers and Dockworkers have then they too should put time and effort into forming unions. If not dont blame management for trying to balance the books through outsourcing. You want a really fair system make it so that anyone from the poorest country can come to the US and do the low end jobs. Soon the cost of living will be low enough in the US to be able to compete on salaries with any other country. Or be like the Doctors and Lawyers who use the law from preventing foreign competition.
10) Thats so freaking wrong. A Puritan culture which is bascially what the Americans started out with respects authority a lot more but that doesnt prevent individualistic expressions in the US
11) Well its true Hindus have made bad decisions in the past which allowed their country to be overrun by Muslim and Christian rulers but that doesnt mean they are self defeating. People make bad decisions. The key is to learn from the mistakes. The Native Americans made a bad mistake by not killing every white colonist on sight and they got overrun as a result. Hindus did the same mistake with Muslims and Britishers but they learnt enough in time to survive so I would say they have learnt their lesson
12) OK Companies fail for a variety of reasons . Blaming outsourcing is just a red herring unless you have specific proof of outsourcing leading to the failure
13) OK the caste systems been dead for a while. When I went through school the only place people were asked about their castes was for reservations( India's version of affirmative action for the erstwhile lower castes) . I had friends from all castes and caste was never an issue in our dealings ( In fact I didnt know their castes till we started filling forms for college admission. Man was I pissed that I was a so called upper caste and could not apply for affirmative action). Granted I grew up in a city so their might still be some vestiges of the caste system left in the really isolated villages. Its kind of like the Hillbillys . You know they exist in your country, You wish they were not so backward, you are embarressed by their presence but theres precious little you can do if some people insist on being stupid. In any case anyone who wants to be successfull in today's India better not be casteist.
I would much rather have a society where the kiddies are desperate for sex and porn than one where 13 year old girls turn up pregnant all the time. Maybe a little conservatism is not such a bad thing.
Okay who is this person. Shes not Indian coz I have never met an Indian with such bad English. Either must be a Pakistani or a product of the American education system where reading means listening to audio books and writing is copying articles of the internet. Okay there are a lot of Indian Engineers desperate to get some pussy but the reason is life in India is tough and guys who make it to Engineering college give more priority to making a career than getting pussy. See Indian guys know once they have their careers made they can pick the best pussy they want in the arranged marriage scene. Frankly on this particular front the Americans have it harder as they have to compete hard from an early age to have any chance of ending up with some acceptable pussy and this does take their concentration away from studies. No wonder they are falling behind in Science and Engineering. If the US wants to blame anything for the fall in Science and Engineering levels they can blame Womens lib not Outsourcing. Outsourcing is a result not a cause. Sure Womens lib gave us a few extra women Engineers and Scientists but it also bloated the heads of all the other girls who were never really qualified to be anything but housewives and as a result they have become so high maintenance a lot of men opt out of time consuming careers in Science and Engineering and opt for Management and Marketing where taking the wife out to a cocktail dinner counts as working and networking. Sure go ahead and call me a Male Chauvinist Pig but remember before Women's lib the US was on the top in science and Engineering.
