Going to School != Literate. In the great US of A most students spend their time at school putting on mini fashion shows and playing sports. They get promoted from grade to grade even if they have not learnt anything so as to not hurt their sense of self worth. In the end they end up working retail, fast food or if their parents have contacts Management. All 3 of these pretty much need no more skills than looking pretty and being able to talk the good talk. The really hard jobs whether they need hard physical labour like gardening or hard mental labour like Engineering is done by cheap immigrants. The US is good at one thing and that is marketing the US as the best place in the world. Once that is done the rest takes care of it itslef. The best people from all over the world make a desperate beeline for the US and once they are here they work hard and cheap and keep this country running. Its a different matter that their children who are US born citizens are again more interested in having a good time than actually studying which is why this country needs immigration in every generation to keep it running. It is like the biggest Ponzi scheme ever but as long as theri are new suckers (immigrants) falling for the scheme this country will stay on top. And oh when we have too many of these useless youth to be absorbed by Walmart or Middle Management we start a war from time to time to send these extra youth off to get rid of them. I used to work for a company in Europe. We had 90% of the US market outsourced to us. I got 4 weeks of vacation. 16 holidays a year which I could add on to my vacation days if I worked on those days and upto 1 month of paid sick leave. My second year at the company I tore my knee ligament playing soccer and I was off for 6 weeks and when I came back I still had 4 weeks of vacation which I took to go visit Egypt. My brother works in San Jose and gets a piddling 2 weeks of vacation a year including sick leave. American society drives people too hard. It is just a myth that life is easier in the US. Personally when I left my job after 3 years I had informed my boss and his boss almost 4 months in advance which was well and good as by the time I left my boss had been transferred to another project too. Of course I could do this as I was leaving to do a Masters so I knew well in advance when I was leaving. Same reason why none of my bosses were paranoid and in fact tried to give me more and more responsibility. Maybe they were trying to get their money's worth or trying to hold on to me. Personally I think it was the later as they offered me a promotion when I was already in the notice period. Anyway even if I was leaving for a competitor as many of my colleagues did the company never just kicks you out. Firstly since our contracts require 4 weeks notice from us 6 weeks from the company for termination of employment 4 weeks is quite a chunk of time. In fact if my guessestimate is right in my last month(while I had given the official resignation ) I started and completed a change request all the way from design to documentation and testing while training up my replacement. For a company to give up that much productive time would be foolish.
On my last day I simply sent requests myself for shutting all my accounts. Once it was done the sysadmin signed off on a form and I handed in my access card and the form to HR. After that I spent the afternoon net surfing on my PC, backing up all my information to an external Hard disk( noone objected. Thats what trust is abt)and basically surfing the net till 5 at which time the project held a farewell for me and gave me my farewell gift and after drinks we all left the building.(No access cards required to leave)
And O btw I left the country 2 days later and my company paid for the tickets to US as a courtesy (nothing required by contract but I had been there 3 years). They even paid my relocation expenses and 50 KG of air cargo.
Needless to say when I finish my Masters my ex company will be on my list of potential employers.

Everyone says DOS is a dinosaur and now we have a museum of history so DOS should be on display. But seriously speaking DOS did revolutionalize the personal PC segment so it has its place in history. So for that matter does the first mouse, the first GIMP , the first laser printer but then it might become a Xerox PARC archive instead of a museum of computer history.
Anyway wonder how a software can be displayed in a museum. Would they have old computer terminals running DOS on which people can play around or would they just have a number of big boards with writeups abbout the software. A museum of computer history seems to me to an unique challenge for a curator.

I am a CS Grad student. For me 15 dollars an hour would be heaven .... I get paid 900 dollars a month for 30 (officially 20 hrs) of RA work

Face the facts. In war everyone will use whatever they have available. The US has nukes. Their opponents have suicide bombers. The Americans changed the rules of war to win WW2( according to most estimates Japan had 80% of its army intact when the atom bomb was dropped. In a conventional invasion of Japan the US would have lost). The US knew to fight by the rules would lead to defeat and so do America's opponents so they are fighting to rules which benefit them specifically small unit actions behind enemy lines and with no clear rear areas which the enemy can hit. And this is a war America is losing. America can be as pigheaded as Japan and finally surrender or make peace right now. Making peace for America would be very simple. Give up on the artificial idea of Israel and let all the Jews settle in US. Problem solved in one stroke and the country would even save 4 Billion dollars a year which it gives to Israel as aid. Incidentally this is more than the cost of Galileo which people are saying is too expensive.

And what about rich people taking all their funds offshore and living offshore. That way they earn all their money by running businesses in the US but they dont pay any tax as they are not spending it here. Massive capital flight much more than under any VAT.
While I believe the current system is crap giving a free pass to the rich and putting the entire nation on the dole is not an answer. Also how do you deal with the large number of foreigners working in the US ( I am referring to the legal workers) Do they or do they not get the dole. If not foreigners would stop coming to work in the US. And if you think the US does not need foreigners to come and work just look at Germany who are now desperate as noone wants to come and work there due to the high taxes.
Also all the Fair Tax website says is the proposal is revenue neutral yet everyone will save money so where is the extra money coming from? Thin air?
A better system would be to abolish income tax and have a fixed vat and a constitutional amendment saying the tax rate on all goods,services,transactions has to stay equal. Depending on the situation Congress can increase the rate (say fighting a war) or reduce the rate (just won the war) but not have different rates for different goods- hence no room for lobbying.
Also I think the payroll taxes,social security and medicare need to be abolished. People should be taken care of by their family and friends in theri old age or if they fall on hard times. If people have been so selfish as to not have children or friends who care about them ; then I say "Tough luck! Go starve on the street!" The establishment of socila security and medicare where you dont need to have your own support systems and rather depend on the Nanny state is what has led to the breakdown of the family, abuse of children and a host of other problems. I mean if a pervert knows that the daughter he is abusing is going to be the only person paying for his food and meds when he is old do you think he will abuse her???? I think NOT!!! And if people have to have friends to fall back on in hard times in good times they will help out a lot more and increase the morality of society. Social security and Medicare were artificial inventions made possible by the demographic boom of the early 20th century. They are not sustainable in the long run. And the nanny state needs to get out of our face. We could easily lose CPS,SSA and a host of other government organizations and survive just as well.
The only thing required is law enforcement and regulatory bodies like FDA,EPA etc. The rest is not government's job and should be done by civil society whether through Church based or secular NGOs.
A few exceptions to the case of people not having anyone to take care of them would be if their children die in war( in which case the VA should take care of them) or are murdered ( In which case the local law enforcement authority should have to pay a pension equivalent to the murdered persons last salary indexed to inflation for the period of time he was expected to live. This would have the additional aspect of giving police departments an economic incentive to do a better job. Currently we live in a capitalist system but our public services are communistic. No policeman gets docked pay if he messes up an investigation or frames the wrong guy. No fireman gets docked pay if he makes a mistake and someone dies. Public servants need to be held accountable and with the reduction in the size of government we will finally have few enough to actually watch to see if they do their job)
Taiwan has a nuclear umbrella. The US has given an explicit understanding that it will defend Taiwan if China attacks whereas India never had such guarantees. Also Taiwan is a small island and realistically cannot be a major mover in world politics so it doesnt mean giving up much for Taiwan to become a US satellite state which they did and very successfully developed their economy. Also a lot of credit for Taiwan's current prosperity must be given to the amount of development work done by the Japanese when they ruled it. Also comparing Taiwan's and India's situation is just as ridiculous as comparing Singapore and Taiwan. A lot of things possible at small scales dont scale up very well.
A better case to compare India with would be Brazil who are also a large country and have a place to play in world affairs. They too realized that they needed a nuclear deterrent but were able to abandon it as they could reach an agreement with Argentina to mutually give up the race. Unfortunately India never had that chance as while in the first 20 years of India's independence our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was being a pacifist China went ahead and developed their nukes. If you dont believe the fact about pacifism I have very good example- When China attacked India in 1962 Indian soldiers ran out of ammunition pretty fast as Indian ordinance factories had been retooled to make buckets for the poor instead of bullets. China's attack in 1962 made India wake up to the fact that unless you have a military balance of power all talk of pacifism is just talk.
Also rupee for rupee it is much cheaper to have a nuclear deterrent than to have to fight a conventional war. If u have nukes people will try to negotiate. If not you become another Serbia, Iraq, Somalia so on.
Also the nuclear and space program develop a lot of spinoff products and absorb a large cadre of educated Indian scientists who otherwise would have to emigrate to the US in order to work on their chosen fields. I mean for crying out loud the basic equations which made the Manhattan project possible were worked out by an Indian in the 30's. They are called Bose-Einstein statistics though Einstein had nothing to do with the discovery. However J C Bose a young and unknown Indian nuclear scientist was unable to have his results published until Einstein took a personal interest in his work and got it published (for which Bose was always gratefull) So basically India had the knowledge for nukes before even US or Germany. What it lacked was the industrial capacity as well as the political will (a legacy of Gandhi's pacifism) or India could have had nukes in 1950's before UK France or China. 1962 gave India the political will but then in the 60's the entire top brass of the Indian nuclear program including Homi Bhabha were assasinated by the CIA in a plane crash in the Swiss Alps so they had to start from scratch again.
Given that Indian scientists while being of world level work cheap India really doesnt spend a lot on nukes or space programs as a fraction of GDP but what it does is well spent as it inspires students to go into science.
The problem is not so much as it being done in India on the cheap and on poor but rather that the companies are trying to do an end run around the FDA regulations in this manner. The regulations exist for a reason- they save lives.
It costs 5 million to build a bridge but just a 500 dollar smart bomb can blow it up. Development is meaningless if you cant defend it. Ask Serbia who got bombed from 1st world standards to a stone age standard in 90 days for less than the cost of a new bridge. As long as China is hostile to India and has nuclear weapons India can only develop under a nuclear umbrella. India had asked both the US and the USSR to provide a nuclear umbrella to them but they refused as they believed only whites deserve to have nukes so India had to develop one. Granted it diverted resources from development but there was no choice.

Personally when I left my job after 3 years I had informed my boss and his boss almost 4 months in advance which was well and good as by the time I left my boss had been transferred to another project too. Of course I could do this as I was leaving to do a Masters so I knew well in advance when I was leaving. Same reason why none of my bosses were paranoid and in fact tried to give me more and more responsibility. Maybe they were trying to get their money's worth or trying to hold on to me. Personally I think it was the later as they offered me a promotion when I was already in the notice period. Anyway even if I was leaving for a competitor as many of my colleagues did the company never just kicks you out. Firstly since our contracts require 4 weeks notice from us 6 weeks from the company for termination of employment 4 weeks is quite a chunk of time. In fact if my guessestimate is right in my last month(while I had given the official resignation ) I started and completed a change request all the way from design to documentation and testing while training up my replacement. For a company to give up that much productive time would be foolish.
On my last day I simply sent requests myself for shutting all my accounts. Once it was done the sysadmin signed off on a form and I handed in my access card and the form to HR. After that I spent the afternoon net surfing on my PC, backing up all my information to an external Hard disk( noone objected. Thats what trust is abt)and basically surfing the net till 5 at which time the project held a farewell for me and gave me my farewell gift and after drinks we all left the building.(No access cards required to leave)
And O btw I left the country 2 days later and my company paid for the tickets to US as a courtesy (nothing required by contract but I had been there 3 years). They even paid my relocation expenses and 50 KG of air cargo.
Needless to say when I finish my Masters my ex company will be on my list of potential employers.
How about American settlers? THey offed 90% of the native american population. Also the west was settled using the homestead act- the worst kind of capitalism where the federal governement would give a parcel of land and supplies to any family which would grab some land from the natives and kill all the natives in the area. Also if the rich in the US had not been shit scared of a communist revolution no new deal would have happened, no labor reforms , no social security. You would still be working 12 hour days 6 days a week in life threatening conditions with no job security or hope for retirement. I dont think communism works but we need to have a few communist countries around to keep the fear of god in the rich so they dont become too greedy

The US is not a true capitalistic state as there is a strong influence of the Chrisitan church which is a communist organization. As the church says we are all good people(children of god) and should share with the less fortunate.

In grade school the smartest kids can figure out they can have a much easier time in college and a richer life if they become Doctors and Lawyers than Engineers and Scientists. So why do these kids go into Engineering. It is the dream of mega projects like the Space program. Of course most Engineers dont make it to NASA but they spend their lives in guilt thinking they are not good enough and work their asses off for private industry hence providing the life blood of the country. Take away the space program, military research(which is cool in a nerdish way) and soon all you would have left would be Doctors, Lawyers , Plumbers and others who feed off the misery and misfortune of others. The politicians understand this better than you do hence they continue the funding

Everyone says DOS is a dinosaur and now we have a museum of history so DOS should be on display. But seriously speaking DOS did revolutionalize the personal PC segment so it has its place in history. So for that matter does the first mouse, the first GIMP , the first laser printer but then it might become a Xerox PARC archive instead of a museum of computer history.
Anyway wonder how a software can be displayed in a museum. Would they have old computer terminals running DOS on which people can play around or would they just have a number of big boards with writeups abbout the software. A museum of
computer history seems to me to an unique challenge for a curator.
