Western RPGs, IMO, allow too much freedom. If you're not careful, you accidentally create the kind of character you are, or go down a story thread you didn't care about at all, and you aren't really engaged by your own character. Furthermore, I hate every WRPG's battle system. Ever. I don't know why, I just cannot stand it at ALL. I can't play a WRPG.
I was thinking about a Battle Royale game myself just last night.
The conclusion I reached was that it would work a lot better as a MMOG - and here's how it would work:
Instead of having persistent servers, each server would have a life of three game days or up to an hour after there was only one survivor. (The last hour would be for participants to talk about the game that just happened, swap strategies, congratulate, etc.) Afterwards, the server would return to a "waiting" state until it had another 40 players.
The environments would have to be wide so that games didn't last all of 30 minutes. Of course, new islands would be involved, and maybe even vast indoor complexes (Alcatraz, anyone? Or maybe the island in Battle Royale II?)
The game would keep track of how many BRs your character had won. There would probably be a limit on how many students each user account could have.
Combat would be real-time, and for realism's sake most hits would kill. Wounds would have the capacity to be fixed up or if left unchecked would eventually kill the afflicted. There would be both voice communication and text communication - but only people close enough could hear you. Stealth would probably be important, as would the ability to decieve others...One of my personal favorite moments in the manga where Mitsuko is embracing a crying Megumi, telling her that they are friends now - and then slicing her throat with a sickle. There would definitely be a capability in the world for moments like this...
Xenogears IS, however, likely to be in the top 5 console RPGs, that top 5 being:
1) Chrono Trigger 2) Dragon Quest Series 3) Final Fantasy Series 4) Xenogears 5) Seiken Densetsu/Secret Of Mana
There's no denying the influence or greatness of any of these titles, or the supreme mastery that runs rampant throughout Chrono Trigger. You can even dispute the order of the titles, but its those 5 that make or break it.
On that note - Xenosaga is good, but not what I had wanted...but then it's hard to take something when you've played the first chapter and the fifth chapter and try to think of it as a whole.
I'm really interested to see how close to Xenogears Episode V will be.
(For those who don't know - in Japan, a book was published called "Xenogears: PERFECT WORKS". It was like a making-of book, inside was a timeline that showed the six episodes of the story and how they related to Xenogears - which was Episode V.)
You comment on someone's spelling, and then misspell something yourself. Joy.
And no, Blizzard did not invent the "clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclic kclickclicklevelupclickclickclickclick" so-called RPG. They were the first to have it decently online, though, as far as I know.
They have two teams of ~100 people each, working in tandem. In other words, right now they have the one team finishing up XII, and XIII is already begun.
Of course, the teams might be a little thinner due to upkeep on XI.
I'm sorry dude...hehe. I actually typed that wrong, I was in a hurry, I meant to say.. --How can they pass laws like that and call it constitutional? There.
I cannot believe that they can do things like this and say that it is unconstitutional. How much longer can we rely on high courts to protect our rights? Really?

Give me Chrono Trigger over Ultima any day.

Maybe if we hope, he'll hit the car.

I always thought other annoying players would be the biggest obstacle to MMORPG success.

And they didn't invent the RTS either.
And what else have they made?
Which is why you say "Screw the standards" and make it look good any way you can. :D
Don't forget that they also get money from Max Payne, for whatever it is they do for that title (has anyone figured that out yet?)

Man, I am seriously surprised that they aren't already owned together.
