This IS Slashdot. Just install Linux on it. This is what you've been waiting for. Remember, you bought it because it was UNIX -- with a shell -- and you can run X. Well, now that you're done trying out the OS that came with the computer, you can actually install the OS you wanted to be using all along.
As others have stated, we've found iPhone/iPad to be one of the kids (one is now 18 months and the other almost 3 year) favorite things to play with - from about 14 months or so they were able to unlock it and find their favorite apps or videos. We load it up with Sesame Street videos and some toddler games. They also love to look at photos and movies of themselves and the family. They also like drawing apps, music apps (Piano, Bloom, etc) The older one likes matching games - its helped them learn shapes, color, animals and animal sounds and now letters and words. The older one knows how to find videos on YouTube and Netflix already. (sigh)
Its saved us from numerous meltdowns when waiting in long lines or on long car rides. They also have to share it with each other.
A downside is that when the little one sees ANYTHING that resembles and icon, she taps on it as if it were an iThing -- she's done this on cereal boxes, books, TV screens etc.
you may not care which OS you are running if the apps you like run everywhere, but someday, somehow, for some reason, you will want to be able to get to the source code - you will want to not be locked into choices that some corporation makes for you, or at least to be able to read over that code to make sure its doing what its supposed to and not too much more.
if you really hate some choice Linus makes, go fork off your own branch -- if you don't like a choice Bill makes, or Steve makes, well, you're sort of stuck.
I recently set up an openBrick - very happy with it - low power, quiet, small, designed to be up 24/7 -- I got this to replace a PowerBook Lombaard that was able to go about 9 months of 24/7 before it gave up the ghost in the machine -- Laptops are not really meant to be run constantly - these bricks are - I expect this guy to last for a few years at least - not really the fastest processor, but for mail/spam filtereing, its perfect. -- and mazzel tov..does she have a sister?
As I was reading this post I realized that I could use what I was reading to resurrect a P100 (sharp) whose drive had failed - but has 2 greact pcmcia slots. Fantastic!
that's how Mystique hacked into that government computer in Xmen 2 -- and I'm pretty sure that's how Jeff Goldblum hacked into the alien ship too - only we didn't know it at the time because os X was only released to celebrites at that time.
I know you are a bunch of programmers, and don't think very much of designers, but $75 credit for a T-shirt design?/. Sells like 5 shirts and the design is paid for. Cheap cheap cheap cheap. Bad Karmas a'brewing.
I still get flakey cookie activity with safari and have submitted bug reports with each version and seen no improvement here -- at least MSIE worked the way a browser should work -- I would hate to have to go write new cookie-setting code for all my sites so that less than 10% of the world can access them just becuase Bill wants to pull a tantrum.
Apple had better realize that safari is still a toy (pos) and had better get it working like a real browser given which way the wind is blowing.
This is way off topic but what the hey...(steps up onto soapbox)
The nature of vandalism is to leave victims feeling both helpless and angry
If this is true then my hypothetical stickering would barely count as vandalism - afterall my intent would to trigger an epiphany or enlightening that we each contribute to the way the world is.. if you act in a way that cultivates a marketplace that comes up with concepts like planned obsolecence and vehicles that are less and less fuel efficent and less and less safe then we end up in a world like the one that is emerging. If this epiphany makes someone angry then they only have themself to be angry at because we are not helpless.
BTW - this is the longest thread I've participated in here - I really enjoyed it all - thanks/. and everyone else
Wow. I really think I struck a nerve here - I've received 2 threats of violence from this post. Do you guys feel threatened by this idea that much? -- is violence the answer to all your problems? -- or is it that you have enough disposable income to hire a lawyer to sue over a sticker - what damages would you claim? total cost of removal maybe $4.95 for acetone and 10 minutes with a rag !
And you thought your oversized unit, er, vehicle would make you feel more secure - or is it that you don't want to be labelled a "gas guzzler"? well, newsflash - the vehicle itself sends that message!
on second thought -- now I think the way to go is to create a PR campaign where being a "gas guzzler" is spun as something to be proud of -- after all it prooves that you have lots of money to waste and that you hold yourself clearly above those around you -- so, once "gas guzzler" is established as a status symbol I'll simply sell you the bumber sticker (printed on recycled paper natch) and you can put it on yourself. - at $5 a pop I'll soon have enough for a new Segway!!!
Great. you support violence and vigilanteism as a response to a sticker? Why not just put a "BUSH IN '04" sticker on top of it and call it even?
and what about the trip to the ER you'll get when your SUV tips over while making a 35MPH turn because their accountants realized that given the immense profits made on SUVs that its cheaper to settle however many lawsuits that get filed against them rather than to recall and/or redesign all the unsafe SUV's they already sold? I'd think that also a good way to get people pissed off at you, but Americans seem to have a very high tolerance for letting themselves get screwed by large corporations.
( I've been considering a bumper sticker campaign where we would covertly place "Gas Guzzler" bumper stickers on SUVs wherever they are parked. Hell, forget bumber stickers - paste that shit on their windshield!! )
But back to the topic - Ban the cars and let the Segwey roll - sure it'll be a problem when there are just a few people with them on the street and most every one else is on foot - but when we all have em -- and you could trade in your SUV for like 10 of em! and since we know SUV owners are so civicly minded they would be happy to donate their extra segweii (what's the correct plural form anyway?) Personally I'd love to see Manhattan (where I live) to be closed to private automobiles and have the street filled with segweii
as far as the cold postal carriers - they should build a little shell around the segwey to make it like a Dalek from Dr.Who.

Great - now your saying that you can make email better by making it slower! Not only is that one-dimensional but its the wrong vector. There are plenty of legit reasons to have to send out a few thousand solicited messages to a list - think of the bands that want to tell their fans about tour dates and all the nerd techie lists (no offense intended) - We don't want to collectively punish the rest of the internet because of spammers.
I'm thinking based upon reading these posts that the best immediate solution is going to be smarter filters and more of them. But this is a technical solution - perhaps there is another angle..(dimension?) Hey- and this is largely the focus of the SPAM Conference. cool. The only thing about filters I still want to be able to get the REAL EMAIL from my girlfriend when she sends me a message saying "I WANT YOUR HUGE C**K TONIGHT" We don't want SPAM filter to become SMUT filters - cause while we might all know SPAM when we see it, we still all have different ideas about smut.
SPAM for FUN and PROFIT?
the market itself will(should?) eventually do some sort of self-regulation (nice thing about free markets) - I don't think there are terribly many people spamming for the fun of it. Somewhere there is an econmic incentive - some dismally low percentage of people who are ordering Growth Hormone or Penis Enlrgers from unsolicited mail they receive will either make it worthwhile to continue spamming for customers or will lead anyone who can add (or subtract) to attract customers in other ways. Solutions which propose a charge for outgoing messages are heading towards this idea,But it too is a solution the collectively punishes the rest of the net (and imagine how up in arms we all would be if somehow "they" started charging for email!)
Marketers are just like little kids (something they actually share in common with techies!) -- when they get a new toy they love to play with it more than the old toys. Email is still a newish toy for them. much more fun than doing direct mail.
anyone know the click through or sales rates for any unsoliced mail? Unfortunatly there will probably be a similar reaction as when ad-banner CTR dropped - make more of them and make them bigger.
Tube amps do sound better. and they feel better too - solid state does not have the same responsiveness or warmth. (think sex with a condom vs without one) Plus we all grew up listening to great albums recorded using that technology - the familiarity of the sound also contributes to "sounding good"
maybe scientists should release videos and go on tour to promote their research.
but there is only 1 Dylan or John Lennon (or Stravinsky or Mingus for that matter) -- I'm sure there are a plenty of "scientists" who are working on things that pay - more so than being "real science" -- pills so fat people can eat all the food they want, perfume and other cosmetics, ways to get more TV channels in the same wire -- are these Einstein/Hawkins level of science or Britney Spears science? , same as a pop artist cranking out an album that the suits at the label want to hear.
If its a question of personality then you should be very careful about you generalizations - there are average an exceptional people in every profession. Just cause Einstein was a genius doesn't mean that every physicist is too.
If its a question of productivity - consider this - How many of the "support people" (your garbage men, janitor, delivery man- yes and maybe even scientists) love (insert favorite musician here) and make it through their day easier with some song in their head -- and how does that effect productivity? maybe that's not quantifiable
someday we will have to pay license fees to the people who 'own' all the various words - most likely if the lawyers have their way authors will have to pay to use the words when they write them and readers will have to pay again when they read them. (if they could we would have to pay for thinking them to - assuming that there really is a language of though) The use of certain words in public speech will require payment of a fee to the owner of the word. This will break down and the owners of letters will charge for their use in the various words. forget free speech - we want speech positioned at the right price point.
this message brought to you by the letter 'e' - please make checks payable to....
I personally think that spellcheckers (esp like in ms word) that fix your error without prompting are causing me to forget how to spell and worse - to know that it doensn't matter cause the computer will catch it for me. The brain is like a muscle - if you stop using it it gets weak. Just cause I can get in car and drive someplace doesn't mean that I should never wallk anywhere again. You have to live in your body(mind) - not in your PDA or PC.

Coincidental for sure but Python made the same jump from 2.6 to 3.0

(yes there is/was python 2.7 but it was released after 3.0)

Jason's design looks wildly psychadelic and crashed opera for me.

Can anyone even proove if a CD copy was made from a stand alone CD-R vs one hooked up to a computer?
Also, Real Jukebox copies my CDs to my hard drive by default (as Real or mp3) - am I lawbreaker just by using their software to play CDs?
Besides, most new music that is coming out isn't worth listening to in any format! (and certainly isn't worth paying for)
and who gets the royalties on a Mozart CD?
