    Funny, i work for a government contractor and i had no idea what it means. Of course i'm just a programmer, people in other departments actually talk to the government agencies and deal with the bidding.

    As a programmer, you should be familiar with Request For Comments (RFCs). It doesn't take a rocket scientist to replace the "C" with a "P" and do some logical thinking. Hell even a programmer could do it.... :-)

    I mean 1200 pages? If I can't do something I look online rather than have my desk cluttered by a few 1200 page manuals. In a storage box somewhere, I still have the Microsoft Visual C++ 1.5 set, which occupies an entire freaking bookshelf. I think that was the time when I realised paper documentation was going to die.

    I'm not even sure the jokes count as "sexist". Even taking Adrias blog version of events the jokes were sexual double entendres, not sexist.

    Her over the top escalation did cause one of the guys to be fired, apparently, and in addition caused the company she worked for to be severely DDOSed and presumably hit with a mountain of email. From what I can tell most people think she severely overreacted.

    FWIW, women do have a right to expect not to be made the target of misogynistic jokes and have a right to be protected in the workplace from inappropriate comments. But that does NOT mean that two people cannot have a semi-private banter even in the workplace or at a conference.

    Actually she "only" got about £6 million in the divorce settlement with Andrew Lloyd Webber, a sum that she actually offered to return when the operatic/musical career skyrocketed. Lloyd Webber told her to keep it as she'd earned it, and besides as his estimated worth is currently about £700 mill, he's hardly likely to miss some small change....

    Why can't these firms set up educational establishments to train US citizens to the skill levels they need? Or have apprenticeships? Or....

    Actually I think it seems a cynical way to keep labour costs down, so perhaps companies ought to be allowed to hire from overseas providing they demonstrate they're paying that worker 25% more than a US citizen would earn in the same role.

    I'm not a US citizen, but I think this, like offshoring is a way of trying to force labour costs down. Paradoxically I think you want labour costs up, as increasing the affluence of the lower/middle classes creates a larger market for your goods.

    I always thought it had something to do with the fact that Poland still had a horse-mounted cavalry at the beginning of WWII.

    Except the Wehrmacht was itself largely reliant on horses for logistical transport and reconnaissance throughout the war, especially during the beginning years. In fact, on the Western Front both the Germans and Soviets used mounted troops regularly.

    I think you meant Eastern Front :-)

    Well I'm typing this on a HP Pavilion g7 which is on my lap, so its a laptop.

    Does everyone need a 17"+ laptops? Probably not
    Do I? Hell yes.
    Is 1600x900 the minimum acceptable display to do coding and DB development? Yep

    If you're doing serious programming, you should use the best keyboard you can, and in most cases a cheap USB keyboard is kinder to the fingers than any laptop keyboard is going to be, thus reducing the risks of RSI and similar injuries.

    By all means leave the laptop open so you can have an auxiliary screen as well as your main screen. Anyway 13" laptop sceens are a joke for doing anything serious, 17"+ laptop screens are the One True Answer :-)
