What I'd prefer to see is everyone EXCEPT Microsoft in on this in an attempt to finally beat the giant at one of its markets. We all know that no matter what courts say Microsoft is gonna be around for a looong time. If the other companies recognize this, perhaps we can finally get a little fair play.

Plus, I'll be interested to hear from the first script kiddie to winnuke the server (since you KNOW it's gonna be NT). I think this is a pretty horrible idea for the gamblers (it'd be so easy to stack games for the casinos) - plus, those with gambling addictions are in a casino even when they're not in a casino - that can't be right, can it?

It nearly single-handedly launched me on my way to reading better and better literature and taught me how to think for myself better than any school could. I don't know what I can say to make this comment different from the hundreds of others that have appeared here, so I will say it plainly: Douglas Adams, you will not be forgotten. You have achieved one of Man's main goals, which is more than billions of other people on this planet can say: you will never die. You live on in your books and words of wisdom. Though your physical body has passed on, you are still with us and will be forever.

Rest in peace and watch over us.

I don't see too many high paying jobs that deal with open source (sure, there are SOME, and if you're one of them I can understand).

Helix is on the right track with UI, but can you imagine some computer-illiterate user who only wants to use email and games and whatnot recompile the kernel? Hells no. I think that BSD is extremely cool. Please, PLEASE don't think I'm trying to start a holy war here. This is MY opinion - you have yours, and I respect that.
    I prefer BSD over Linux.
OK, I can hear you all yelling at me now. Yes, I prefer BSD. I don't know why, but I do. I run OpenBSD as a desktop. I have found that the biggest issue I have with it is the ports tree - it just isn't big enough. No XMMS, no mozilla (C++ linker issue there), no Gnome. These are purely aesthetic things, though, and these ARE available on FreeBSD - but I'd never change from OpenBSD.
However, the biggest issue I have with BSD is this - there needs to be more user groups. I see Linux user groups and Linux shows everywhere, I see a BSD group maybe a few states away. I see BSD shows on the opposite coast of the US. I think that it needs to get *out there* more, and I think that Mac OS X will help get it more recognition, and I think that perhaps soon I will see more BSD shows and more BSD groups around.
Now, you may not agree with me - fine, think what you want.
Another issue I have is documentation. I would love for there to be more HOWTOs for BSD. I see lots of documentation on compiling kernels, but there is no user friendly way of doing it (such as make xconfig) (on another note - I enjoyed being able to download a tarball of the kernel source instead of using CVS). Also, I would like to be able to look at a HOWTO specific for the subject of installing a CDRW or getting other hardware to work - with compatibility lists on each thing.
I like BSD a lot on all other counts, though. Things will get better, its not a dead OS (which is what I thought when I first installed it, like it was just an old OS that some hobbyists kept going). It is probably at the same stage Linux was at when I first started using it (when redhat 5.0 was released). I expect to see a lot from it soon.

The user base doesn't matter for crap. It matters what the industry thinks. Looks like they're embracing GNOME and not KDE. Therefore, the user base will grow. The same thing is happening in the *nix vs MS debackle, companies are starting to realize which the better product is, embracing it, therefore the user base increases.

IMHO KDE and GNOME are tools to interface more cleanly with your computer. Both are excellent products. In the 'one man's trash is another's treasure' view, different people want different things. This may not be a very business oriented statement, but if the companies are going for the OSS philosophy, they should allow the other to co-exist without arguement so that there will always be a choice. Neither KDE nor GNOME should be obliterated, therefore taking away the choice, therefore going against the OSS philsophy, and in kind shedding bad light on OSS. When people read that the OSS philosophy is about choice, then see flamewars like these pop up, it can not look good in the public eye.
