Exactly. There's not a lot to discuss on the issue. Most of the comments will be duplicates of those made ten years ago to a similar article. In other words, a circle jerk.

I'm not really concerned with the problems of the industry or any difficulty they might have devising a secure system. Only that it remains their problem, not ours. If the house becomes uninhabitable, tear it down. Legally we are not required to give them our SSN, and we shouldn't. Only certain departments of the federal government is entitled to use it. We can keep it off limits to anybody else, but we have to do it. If we back down, we only have ourselves to blame.

That's all okay. It doesn't have to look like a camera. And you don't have to look like you're filming anything, so nobody can identify the cameraman. So even with their twisted interpretation of wiretap law, nobody can be charged. You might not be able to use the video (nor want to, without giving yourself away) as evidence in court, but you can still tag the cop on youtube.

They cannot legally require you give up your SSN. They can only ask. The law is already on our side. Public acquiescence is the real problem.

Maybe not.. Remember that movie where they put out oil well fires by exploding nitroglycerin? Maybe here if they drop a nuclear bomb on the plant, radiation coming from the reactors won't be such a big issue. It's a little like dropping a brick on your foot to forget about your headache.

The banking industry will just devise some other unique key...

Yeah... That's the idea. The bank, insurance, and other industries and departments are supposed to use their own unique to them ID system. Now a thief would need to break into all those different databases. IT is up to all of us to resist allowing them to use the SSN. Just say no.. The law doesn't prohibit that.

With books, someone would have to enter my residence unauthorized with a fairly large truck and haul stuff out. Similar with DVDs...It would take a lot more than just a delete to remove access from a library of physical media.

A simple false accusation of a 'computer' crime and a rubber stamped warrant can deal with that quite nicely. Now it's 'authorized'. No conviction required. Yay RICO and 'discovery'.

Crime isn't prosecuted with 'deterrence/prevention' in mind. That would leave all the prisons very empty, and reduce law enforcement funding. Punishment for crimes committed is much more profitable. If everybody obeys the law, it only means we don't have enough laws.
