    DRM was a response to piracy.

    Pure shtick.. DRM is the response to liberating technology that frees the artist of the gatekeepers' toll booth. Consumer equipment is crippled in order extort the creators with exorbitantly priced "pro" gear. The "piracy" thing is to get public sympathy.

    First off, get over this "other side" BS. There is no "other side". Do you think that the people who fix these elections are going to let some fool fuck things up for them? No, the government will keep on doing what it always does no matter who occupies the office. You don't have to vote for anybody. You're supposed to vote for the person you think is best for the job.

    In cozy relationships like this, yes, it frequently is a problem. It is one of the main reasons so few companies control such a vast market and become "too big to fail". The regulations are designed by lobbyists to lock out the competition, creating artificial scarcity and high prices.

    A tax like this could kill Free software.

    Then the idea makes even more sense. Could be the intention. So then make the tax somehow proportional to the price. That should let "free" off the hook. It's bullshit. The whole thing is just designed to featherbed another bureaucracy with... former Apple/Microsoft/Google/Oracle executives.

    It gives a "private organization" too much authority over the rest of us. Not always directly, but through the use of things like collusion and intimidation. And it let's them dictate to our legislators the regulations we all must live under. So now we have indefinite copyright, absurd obscenity law, ongoing prohibition, a smothering bureaucracy, war, etc etc etc...
