That's because compared to marketing and lobbying, heavy discounts for major hospitals and the insurance companies which are not passed on to the rest of us, R&D comprise a relatively minor cost of doing business.
I believe 'gated communities' (also known as: "condomínio fechado" or "barrios privados") is still available.. And when Apple becomes president of the US (it is almost 35 years old), it will just be refereed to as 'nation/state'.
What social change? The cops are still shooting at people. And, as the old cliche goes, the 'new boss is the same as the old boss'. Individuals come and go. The system stands forever.
