One big thing that's contributing to the whole karma whore problem here is the fact that it's too easy to post as anon. Whenever somebody wants to post a flame or a useless message (goatse.cx or "1st p0st!"), they click on that convenient little "Post Anonymously" checkbox in order to preserve their karma.
Nowadays, Karma has changed from a being a user's "average rating" to a "sum of all posts", because folks are using anonymity as a Negative Moderation Shield, instead of what it was really meant for (to keep The Man from trackin' you down).
I can offer a couple of remedies:
- Remove the "post anon" checkbox, thereby forcing users to logoff in order to post anon. This would reduce anonymity abuse.
- Continue to conceal the identity of users who use the "post anon" checkbox, but let moderation to their anon posts affect their account's karma.
That's because it's in AVI format and uses the DivX codec. Sorta like how a.WAV file can be encoded via PCM, ADPCM, u-law, etc. AVI is just a minimal wrapper around various types of audio/video payloads.
So she placed the cup between her legs and squeezed it (causing it to spill) because she thought that the coffee was only a mere 150-ish degrees?
Besides, the reason that this case has become infamous isn't because of how/why she was hurt, it's the fact that she received more money than should have been awarded even if the McDonalds employee had leapt through the drive-thru window and raped and murdered her.
Recently, ID software honcho Graeme Devine had stated in a.plan update:
Ah, off to New York for Mac World. We've got a nice surprise there for everyone.
The suprise turned out to be the Q3A mission pack running under OS X & radeon. This is certainly the kind of thing that would have been incorporated into Steve Job's onstage dog-and-pony show, but since ATI managed to piss Steve off, Q3A also got relegated to the sidelines.
I think Intel needs to come clean as to why exactly it's still pushing Rambus memory so hard.
Other than the fact that they own Rambus? How about profits from licensing Rambus technology? How about using patents to put the squeeze on SDRAM manufacturers? How about designing future CPU's and chipsets so that rambus is the ONLY memory that is supported?
We love to bash M$ because we are visibly affected by their evilness on a daily basis, but I think most people would be suprised by the kind of nasty stuff that Intel gets away with (just ask intergraph!)
Not only are these positions held by men, but the media propagate stereotypes of women. A recent study found that "women are often still depicted on television as half-clad and half-witted, and needing to be rescued by quick-thinking, fully clothed men"
I would argue that half-clad or unclad men would also be willing to rescue these half-clad women...
I first read about this technology in the September 1990 issue of Byte magazine ("Experimental holographic system promises massive data storage, rapid access", pg 24 - 25). Back then, they were still trying to figure out how to perform nondestructive reads from holographic storage.
And they were suggesting that within 5 years, we'd all have gigs of this stuff on our desktops. I guess that's what happens when you let managers decide on project release dates instead of the engineers who are actually doing the work!
The really disappointing thing is that it looks like RAMBUS is quite inferior to the current crop of SDRAM offerings. Check out this recent article at Tom's hardware for details.
Issue #1 - Considering that Win98 doesn't support SMP, linux sorta has an unfair advantage in a dual-CPU box.
Issue #2 - Why spend $250+ on a GeForce 2 unless you're benchmarking 3d capabilities? A vidcard that costs half as much would be able to achieve the same results for 2d work.

Although I certainly don't have any reasons to defend NT, I don't think that it's fair to blame the OS for a bad programming practice [not preventing/handing a Div0]. I *do* understand how a Div0 is handled by a more robust OS, but realistically, it would still kill the app. It's still the programmer's job to recover the app/system in such instances.

Are you truly 15 years old or do you just prefer to act like you are? To respond to a reasonable, beleivable statement with "Do you have any statistics to back up your statement" really shows off a moral and intellectual defecit.
From a intellectual standpoint -- If you truly doubt the validy of what Mr. Vining has said, then the non-weasel response would be "I beleive that your statement is incorrect". This would then provide Mr. Vining (or anyone else) an opportunity to validate his position (using statistics or whatever other method is deemed appropriate).
From a moral standpoint -- By requesting that a person go out and find some statistics in order to gain your approval of their statements, it shows that you have little regard for them or their time. Conversely, it shows that you probably think much too highly of yourself. If *you* doubt his statements, then why don't *you* go look for the statistics that would prove or disprove them?
Such a move could put an end to the terrible brain drain that Vancouver has been suffering for several years. I'm a Canuck who has been enjoying the California economy (and weather!) for the past four years, and the daily mantra that myself and several Canadian co-workers share is "We're Never Goin' Back".
However - Microsoft should be able to give Vancouver the kind of boost that would attract many techies back to their homeland.
I guess Dave's our first candidate to someday write "iD: behind closed doors" (or "True confessions of an iD software developer" or maybe some clever title involving "iD" and "ego", or whatever).
Of course, half of the dialog from duke nukem is actually stolen from Army of Darkness. Check out Bruce Campbell's statement (from http://scifi.ign.com/feature/2525.html)
But Campbell's actually had no part in his most famous 'appearance' in a videogame -- if you remember Duke Nukem 3D, the main character was always knocking off one-liners borrowed from Sam Raimi movies like Army of Darkness, stuff like, "Hail to the king, baby." Needless to say, Campbell's no fan of Duke Nukem
. "I think it's a rip-off, and I think they should have done two things," he says. "One, they should have been original, and if they didn't do that, they should have at least hired me." Well, is Campbell available for a sequel? "No, too late," he says, laughing
Then explain to me why the back alleys of New Delhi and Beijing are littered with shops that will do sonograms/amniocentesis AND on-site abortions?
I love this rule about "it's okay to say racist stuff about westerners (particularly Americans), because they're the ones who do it to everyone else".

Good one. Proof that "nonsensical technobable" == "+ moderation".

I would choose Microsoft IIS 4.0, because it's got more holes.
Besides, too many guys have been inside Apache already...

I'd suggest that the tens of thousands of affected sysadmins return the favor by periodically pinging Quova's systems.
I would argue that half-clad or unclad men would also be willing to rescue these half-clad women...

It's easier to justify charging $99 for a BIG box of software than for a small box or jewel case only.
