I'm certainly not a MS-fanboy (ArchLinux!), but I'm excited about Win7. It runs much, much faster on my single-core P4 machine than Vista and so far everything just works -- games run flawlessly in 7 and they didn't in Vista. The only thing I can't get working so far is Cygwin.

Agreed! It's much better than stealing the focus from my current app.

But something tells me we haven't seen the end of apps stealing focus. I wish that was a setting you could enable ("never steal focus"). TweakUI doesn't run on Vista or 7, and it didn't really work on XP on a domain -- it kept resetting itself somehow.

At least Vista gives you a visual cue that it is busy and a basic progress bar while it is busy loading the folder contents.

    Yeah, the infamous Green-Bar-of-Death.

It's a nice idea, but I occasionally run into folders where the green bar reaches the end of the bar (signifying completion) but it never really quits. I usually see this when I try to access a folder that I don't have rights to, Vista asks me and elevates to give me permission and then starts loading the file contents. But I've also seen it fail on large folders, so there are still bugs in the system.

    That's not a bug, it's a feature! :)

I don't think you can make the Start Menu button (pearl, whatever) smaller. It's designed to overlap the small taskbar like it does in Vista. I actually like this look, except it's a little broken in 7. Move the small taskbar to the top of the screen and the button's bottom is cut-off, not rounded. :)

I actually really like 7; it's been very stable with no major bugs to report (except the Installshield bug). It runs much faster than Vista and all of my games works on it flawlessly, something I could never get Vista to do.

Simply changing my diet and working out at least three times a week has done wonders. Turns out the years of fast food has left me with a large vitamin B deficiency and that was the cause of everything. Ironically enough, one of those "5 hour energy" drinks worked better on my mood than any of the meds I tried; that's when I started to realize that it was a vitamin deficiency.

They've added some neat features. You can subscribe to podcasts. They recently added what I think are video podcasts, but I'm not exactly sure. I watched some show by John Dvorak where he interviewed the Digg people. It can stream MP3s, so you don't need a seperate box for that. You can rent movies through amazon.com for $1.99. Once you hit the play button it keeps them around for 24 hours then deletes them, but that's still more convenient than netflix. Actually, all of those features are also available on the Series 2; they came with a (relatively) recent service update. "Streaming MP3s" means that your Tivo can act as a client to receive mp3 streams; you can use the Tivo Desktop software to host the mp3s on a computer on your home network, but I prefer http://galleon.tv/. I have my entire mp3 collection ripped and served using Galleon; having an older Tivo in my music room makes playing bass much easier (no cds to change, all albums are available in one easy to use interface, etc)

BTW, that Dvorak show is called "Cranky Geeks" -- love the title! :)

I have a series 2 also and it can transfer shows over the network, so I can keep every episode of BSG and a bunch of movies and such. That's very cool, except for the fact that the transfer rate is slow. Transfers are slow on the series 2, but you can usually start watching the shows you are transferring after a few minutes. Occasionally it will pause if it needs to transfer more before you can watch it, but that has rarely happened to us.

  19. Re:Not such a good idea. on Introducing GNU/Linux Via Applications · · Score: 1

when you start the program (GIMP), you are overwhelmed by a huge number of windows from which you don't even know which is which. I, for one, used to use apps maximized, so I like them to be in ONE single window... I agree with you; I wish GIMP acted more like Visual Studio windows where you have a choice: you can dock the toolbox and other control windows to the sides of the editing screen or you can leave the control windows as separate windows. I use both methods; when I'm editing a project normally, my toolboxes, explorers, properties, etc are docked to the the editing window. But when I'm running in Full Screen mode, these control windows are undocked and moved to my secondary monitor -- I get the full screen on my primary monitor for editing code and the control windows are always available on the secondary monitor. I'd love to see that type of functionality in GIMP.

Looking at the file managers of different systems. Windows has a usable Explorer, which doesn't have many features, but at least is working quite well. Eh, not sure I'd call it "quite well". Why is it that you sometimes still lose the entire shell if an explorer window crashes, even if you have "run as separate process" checked? It doesn't happen as often as it used to, but it's still quite an annoyance when it does happen.

Against all of these things I keep using Linux... I use both (my wife uses linux exclusively) but I'm primarily in Windows, mostly for games -- I play a lot of games that doesn't work well in linux. And there are a few annoyances that I can't get resolved in linux. For example, in Windows I can click on a streaming mp3 (or pls) link and Media Monkey will automatically start playing it immediately, even if it was already playing something (I do a lot of stream hopping.) However, I cannot get Amarok to do that in Linux; it usually just appends the new stream to the current playlist. I've checked the preferences but nothing I modified changed that behavior; I even wrote a dcop script to try to force it to work correctly, but I could never get it to work like I wanted.

Getting Beryl to work in KDE is pretty sweet, even if it breaks the shutdown ability on the logout screen. I really miss that in Windows...

True, what you've purchased will always work (at least until changes in the kernel or libraries causes cedega to not run correctly).

The problem that I've found with Cedega is that I don't like the subscription model; I personally see little benefit spending money every month if their monthly releases don't solve problems I'm experiencing or add new games that I'm interested in. I'd much rather pay a set amount once every so often for the product (even if it's somewhat higher) when new version of Cedega interests me.

I could do as you suggest and repeatedly do the $15 three month subscription, but I've had problems in the past getting WorldPay to cancel my subscription; just getting my account information was a chore.

Now I just gotta figure out how to do it. :)
