actually, most things can remember 11 digits already. If we remove the extra digit for dialing long distance, and add a digit to the area code, most equipment should be able to handle it fine.
It would know no differance between dialing
3453 345 3456
and
1 324 365 4567
All current 3 digit area codes could be converted to 4 digit by appending a 1.. then 2-9 would be used for additional area codes.
so 324 365 4567 would become 1324 365 4567 (1 no longer being used for dialong long distance)
(whenever a phone company descides to split an area up into multiple area codes they would use something from 2000-9999 for the new area code)
This would of course require some changes to the phone companies hardware.
When I lived in colorado, we used to visit denver right after a big storm and look at all the wreckage produced by a tornado. A lot of times you find foundation where buildings are supposed to be.. cars upside over... etc etc.
to start off, it would not be proper for/tmp to retain any files after a reboot. After all its only ment to hold files for a short period of time.
However, working with large files can be an issue. I was using a/tmp directory loaded into memory via ramfs. The main problem, I dont think ramfs allows the contents to be swaped to disk.
I was trying to work with a large amount of files, tried to create a tarball and urgh.. things went bad. I think part of the reason might be the fact the kernel I was using had a buggy version of ramfs. But still.
Anyways.. most unix system do (or should atleast) clear out the tmp directory on reboot.
they want to get the code into the DEVELOPMENT kernel.
Trying to get something like this into a stable kernel would be overkill. Something like this would be best put in early into the next devel kernel (2.5)
when you think about it... the violence on tv and video games have been increasing at a very fast rate.. And guess what.. teen violence has gone DOWN..
Why don't the politicians see this? How about the news media? I don't frickin know..
seems to me.. these sort of things suppress ones lust for blood (a natural thing).. not encourage it.
Its like masturbation..
You are really horny.. you masturbate.. you feel fine for a while.. you feel blood lust.. you kill something in a game... you feel fine for a while.
(Although, if you where doing both at the same time.. I then I would start to worry....:)
not to mention the fact that blowing up mars would totally screw up earths orbit. If any of you remember the game gravity... then you know what I mean:)

I live in sothern california. I dont think spanish will become the default. Why? We have a lot more than just spanish speekers. We also have a pretty decent asian community. A good example, I used to work in an area of california that had a huge asian community. (consider the fact the company I worked for was Korean data systems.. hehe). A lot of the text on buildings WAS NOT english (or spanish). Even the text that WAS english had some weird funky asian looking font:).
There are many parts of cali that seem like totally differant countries. Some feel/look like mexico, some say.. japan. (ever been in an asian market? In California?:)
Actually I could see microsoft writing a vm (much like how NT handles os2/win16) for linux. If they did this, I would not expect much more than fairly limited console binary support (again, much like how NT handles os2:).. actually I think they finally got rid of the os2 compadibility in 2000.. )
Actually I can see a few ways they would attack this issue. A module to provide some compadibility and a rewrite of the loading code, along with changing there memory management some. Rewrite the code that provides memory access...
You dont need the linux kernel to provide most things if there is a way to let the windows code handle them. Could write a module to allow windows protected mode drivers to interact with the hardware. You would not need linux to provide anything except limited boot ability and fat32. The rest could be handled in windows. (you might use some sort of kernel level wrapper so you could avoid rewriting drivers).
This might actually be LESS work than trying to port the win32 api to X then write a bunch of new software to emulate a lot of functionality windows currently provides. (example, hardware configuration via some sort of gui. They would need to write new software to handle working with current tools)
Heck if they wanted to bad enough, they could use some sort of dos vm in kernel space. It would not have to be like dosemu but instead, it could provide a layer of compadibility so they would not need to rewrite that much. (this could handle things like binary loading,.. hardware access.. etc. They might rewrite the filesystem code to make use of the linux fat32 driver)
Either way, I dont think microsoft would come close to attempting any of this. I can see however a linux vm within nt much like how nt used to handle os2/win16. Actually I believe some company is already working on this.
Sorry if Im not making any since or if I'm rambling... Im pretty tired.
Not true. Microsoft could end up with a VERY closed source distrib. Think about it. Windows currently runs on top of dos. Even Windows ME runs on dos (although better hidden)... What if microsoft ports windows directly to the linux kernel, using a few binary only modules to allow windows full access to everything that would be provided by dos. (kernel level access to hardware for example)
The only part that would be under the GPL would be the kernel it self. (after all, linux is only a kernel... the software running under linux != linux)
Microsoft could take this to the point of having a pretty powerful version of windows. Not only that, but the kernel it self would continue to be maintained for them.. for FREE by the rest of the community.
I don't think this day will come.
But if it did, rather than extending windows to take advantage of using a linux kernel, they COULD make the difference between windows on dos and windows on linux so small that the user would never know. They could have the windows portion handle EVERYTHING that is currently handled in windows... leaving linux in the position dos is currently in... (loads windows) well you get the idea.
Scary, I can see windows loading from the kernel as if it was a initd binary/script.
Only two things would be needed to get a ported version of windows to boot. The linux kernel could be placed somewhere like/windows/kernel. They could even modify the kernel to use/windows/win.com as the initd (yes, I know they could not use the real win.com:)..) They could even go as far as running the entire thing from a fat32 partition...
This way they would provide NOTHING to the community, while still giving them an edge. (Hey look, where using linux technology.. no need to use linux anymore because you get both windows AND linux right here. What do you mean big ol DOJ? We are embracing and extending our competitor.)
umm actually.. working with msdos (from a programmers perspective) is not the greatest task in the world. Especially when you wish to do anything with graphics. (Yes I know, VESA eventually came along and there where a few librarys for video access.. but still.)
Besides that, Microsoft bought DOS from someone else so they would have something they could licence to IBM.
Hrm, atleast from what my boss tells me. If I write code at home,.. its mine. Even if I end up using it from work. (although if I spend most my work time writing it.. thats another story)
Item number one would have removed ALL my cds... I usually buy something I like. If I DID have an mp3 on my hard drive that I do not own a cd of.. I apparently dont like the mp3 very much and I was too lazy to delete the thing. (also note,... a big deal of my mp3s.. Ive actually CREATED from the cds I have.. so I can keep a copy of my music at home while the actual cds are at work or in my car)
Why not use something like ramfs or a ramdisk to store data? Sure it means if your system gets shut off.. you loose your data... But that COULD be an advantage... "Ohh shoot.. the (name group your hiding from) is here... pull the power quick!"
Dia and Visio where designed more with things like flow charts in mind.. Corel Draw on the other hand was designed with graphics design in mind. Although you COULD use Corel Draw for things like flow charts.. and you COULD use Dia or Visio (or rational rose) for graphics design.. BUT, it would make a lot more since to use the 'correct' tool for the job:)
Ive used Dia a few times at work... Its a little buggy.. But it is a decent program.. It also allows you to export to a few various file formats.
As far as gimp goes.. I DO think its a very good app. Yes it does have its problems.. But the current devel versions are going VERY well. (Actually.. after letting one of the graphics people at work play with gimp some.. he is thinking about switching over from windows/photoshop)
Usually a 1.0 product is kinda lacking.. and the next version ends up being what the 1.0 version should have been. (good examples include gimp.. gnome.. kde.. hell.. windows.. os2.. ms office...:) )
you can get a dimension from them with linux preinstalled for about 1450 (more or less) thats with a 20gb drive, 128mb ram.. 32mb nvidia gforce.. decent 3com nic.. etc etc

Actually, false.
I believe 2.2 was in development for over 2 years..
2.4 has only been in devel for about a year so far..

The big problem with not sleeping.. your spinal cord.
:)
being upright all day compresses your spinal cord. (the fluid in the discs to be more exact).. Laying down helps your spinal fluid decompress.
So basically, you wake up a little taller than when you goto sleep
Of course, if you slept upright you would have this problem too.
Either way, staying upright too long can damage your spinal cord.
Actually, this could just be PART of our evolution.
