File planet is both very amazing and bothersome at the same time. If you want your goods for free, sure you can have that. You might have to wait in a download que 40 mins before you get your fix, but when you actually DO get it... you are usually downloading at a fairly decent speed.
Or you can pay up a bit of money and have unrestricted downloads at high speeds from special servers deticated to paying customers.
I hate having to sit in a que waiting for my download to start... but when you think about it.. they do it really well.
fileplanet shovels out gigs of data every day.
For everybody BUT the end user, its a dream come true. No longer do you need to worry about providing enough bandwidth to allow people to download your software.
Actually, crossing your eyes is usually the 'quick' method to seeing the 3d image in a stereograph. Unless the stereograph was designed for this method, it will result in the depth being reversed. Normally you are supposed to set your point of focus beond the image.
Most printed stereograph's use the 'slow' method.
(I call it slow, because it is usually harder to set your point of focus FURTHER away than it is to set it closer.)
Another side effect to using the 'quick' method (besides the image being in reverse) is that the image will appear smaller in size than if the 'slow' method is used. Atleast this is the effect I get:)
Of course I do do not remember the last time I played with a stereograph... its been a while... However I have tried both of these methods while on the john looking at the tiles at the floor... Have to have something to do when you have nothing to read:)
the difference between downloading a full bz2 compressed kernel and a full gz compressed kernel IS a fairly big deal on my little dialup
not to mention that if you remove whatever percentage of users that still downloads the.gz version, you save the difference in size times the amount of users in bandwidth!
a few megs per user times just even as little as 25 users makes a difference
the bz2 is not there so much for your sake, but for the servers:)
(although again for little modem users like me, it DOES make a difference... for me that is:P)
which is a dumb thing to think

Actually if you ignore the fact 'gay' and 'queer' are now considered synonym's for being homosexual... they used to have totally seperate meanings...
gay meaning happy... "showing cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement" or "Bright or lively, especially in color"
and queer meaning something that is quite odd or out of the ordinary.
But anyways... calling someting gay could be considered quite the complement. So this could mean that this binary watch is bright and lively... or rather cheerful:)
So next time someone calls you gay... you might as well say in return: "What a queer comment, I am not at all happy right now... but thanks for the complement"
Where I used to work it was REALLY hard to get work done some times.
We where on the second floor... the entire floor was open... so sound easily moves accross the entire thing. The floor vibrates really easy when people walk about the room... And you can see EVERYTHING just by looking up... LOL
(If I looked up and a little to my right I end up staring at the CEO... etc)
Although there was not much I could do about the vibration... one thing that helps is putting up things like bookshelvs. (I had a filing cabnet and a foldup table against one of my cubicle walls)
As far as noise goes... a REALLY good pair of headphones (the nice kind that cover up your entire ear) can cut down on a lot of noise... So the use of those plus some decent LOUD music
After listening to the music for a bit you forget its there... but its enough to take up a few of the extra cycles your mind ends up spending on thinking about everything that is bugging you...
Of course the fact the engeneering department stood in the hallway while they smoked instead of going outside was a bit of a problem too... considering around the later half of the day the damn place was rank with smoke fumes.......
Of course now I am working from home... Of course is a problem all on its own *grins*
Maybe I do not fully understand the technology in the PS2 correctly... but doesn't it actually have TWO 300mhz cpu's? I believe one of them has a bus directly to the graphics core...
(Okay, technically it has 3 cpu's... if you consider the I/O Controller is actually a psx core... and I do believe it is supposed to be somewhat programmable... but I could be wrong hehehe)
Looking at the dmsg log.. it seems only one of the cpu's are being initialized.
* No mail apps. Only a weak minded fool uses a mail app. Telnet to your POP server at port 110 and learn the commands to read your email that way!
The funny thing is... I have actually done this many times:P Usually when I do not actually have a direct way to get at the mail machine... and I have to route through many other boxen to actually GET there...
where I live in Laguna Niguel, ca... its REALLY hilly... Not to mention the fact the apt complex I live in is kind of old...
I am too far from pacbell to get DSL... (dialup is pretty bad on these lines... forget online games... even ones that are alright via dialup...)
Can't get cable modem due to the fact adelphia uses a shared satalite dish per building and is selling that to us as cable (minus half the channels we would get on normal cable)... So I do not even have a direct cable line to my apt.
No isp's close enough that sell microwave wireless... but it does not really matter considering EVERYTHING is in the way anyways.
Satalite is an option but cost to entry is too high... not to mention I live in an apt which makes it a little hard to install the dish.
Ricochet was awesome! I was getting speeds around 180kbps (22-23k a sec... not bad) with okay latency. (between 100 and 200ms)
So you're argument for a younger earth isn't very convincing.
Although I think the original poster was a little off... the fact is, earth IS made up of material that is a lot older than earth it self. Matter does not just create it self... it comes from somewhere. Of course, I do not think there would be any way of actually dating say.. magma. (What a hot date that would be... hehehehehe)
If God is bound by the laws of physics, there go all your miracles.
Bzzzzt! Wrong. You must consider the fact that technology beond your time is indistinguishable from magic or in this case, miracles. Show a caveman a lighter, and you will be treated as god.
now, I am only 20 years old.. but I have been a nerd since the 80's... so hehehe.. through the 80's and early 90's I owned many many many multi function watches... ones with little calculators and all sorts... This is NOT encryption. What SELinux provides is stronger access control mechanisms. This means that users and programs only have access they need in order to get their job done.
This is a totally different thing from encryption. Encryption is one thing this is actually NOT touching. Encryption on most systems is useless if someone can break in and obtain the key needed to decript whatever you are trying to keep secret.
In a environment with better access control, it makes it a LOT harder for someone to actually gain that type of access. If someone breaks into your mail daemon or your http daemon, they only gain the rights that program had, nothing more.
I do agree however, that it is nice to see the government helping community (opensource/free speech) software. I think this is something we could use a lot more of.

Interesting though... I wonder how differences in time/space between entangled particles would effect things...

Will the modifications made to the entangled particle be reletive to the first particle?

I do not know about you guys, but I am totally devistated. I use my TV as an alarm clock, so the first thing I woke up to this morning was one of the towers with a huge gaping hole in it... I sat there and watched everything happen. I still could not believe what I saw when I watched the buildings collapse right in front of me on the TV.
This has all been so intence... I could not help but to cry each time I started to comprehend what exactly I was seeing on TV. Found it fairly hard to get to work... trying to fight the tears out of my eyes so I can see the road. Then now, at work... I am having to restrain my self.
I just can not believe how horrible all this is. I mean... geez... this is all going on in my own back yard (well, you know what I mean... I live in california... but its in the same country as I live in... this is all happening to fellow americans...)
It was not like some army came in with attack aircraft... They hijacked our OWN commercial aircraft... filled with americans just like me... and made them part of their plan for mass destruction.
Not to mention I am still having problems trying to grasp the consept of just HOW many people died...
I think everyone is missing a fairly important point... normally when people have sex they are not just sitting or laying on one another.. that would make sex in general rather hard. Instead one tends to hold on or curl parts of their body around eachother. You might have your legs (or a leg) wrapped around your partner.. Your fingers might be intertwined.. you might have your hands around your partners waist.
besides.. two people swimming around trying (or avoiding) to have sexual context might actually be kinda fun...
Roads reserved exclusively for business traffic - a possible hit, when considering high-occupancy vehicle lanes.
Although this differs GREATLY depending on where you live... I would like to point out that atleast where I live (Sothern California) this is almost exactly right.

Houses that cost $36k. My god. If only. If only...
Well technically housing could cost that much... However there is a HUGE margin on housing. (Buy a house and sell it a year later to see what I mean, you will almost always gain a profit)
Plastic waterproof furniture - only deck chairs. Although... you can buy entire suites of inflatable furniture.
The author does make a good prediction about washing furnature and the carpet.. We do wash our carpets and sometimes things like furniture... And its usually as simple (almost) as vacuuming. wetvac anyone?:)
Videophones in every home - QuickCam, perhaps?
This really depends on how you look at it. As far as video phones go, we have had the technology for a while now.. but nobody is very quick to adapt. Why buy a vidphone when nobody you know owns one? However, a few countries have been more accepting than others. This is still something we could see in the near future though. Especially with non phone companies providing phone service. (I can get phone service from my cable company now... strange eh?)
I have to agree though... This was a very good view into life of 2000. I don't think the author could have come any closer given it was written 50 years ago. He did of course follow a general role (which most predictions seem to fail doing..).. Current experiments and technology only currently being used by scientists eventually (well, some times) become a standard for your every day person.
It might be a good prediction to say that in 50 years.. your standard person might have some interaction with quantum computers. Of course quantum computers might never become something that you see in everyones home like we see the pc.. But quantum computers will effect everyone in one way or another.
Also, although most people will still have nothing to do with space, you will see a lot more space travel. Within 50 years might have actually built a base on the moon. We could very easily have a base on mars. (I say the moon because it would be a thousand times cheaper to launch space vehicles into space from the moon than it is from earth. It makes a lot more since. Honestly, I dont know why we building a space station instead of a lunar base... but I wont go there:)
The future only holds what we are willing to make of it:)
Browsing through the 714 list (south california)... I found many bbs's that I once used.
One was a bbs (in cali of course) Called Jims World.. I was a Co-Sysop on that bbs for some time. Used to have the tele# memoriezed:)
I eventually ended up making all the ansi/rip graphics. However, the prefered interface was actually a windows client so I dont think many people had a chance to use my ansi/rip screens:).. I forget the name of the bbs package... It was pretty interesting though.
Also tried to find an old christian bbs I used to visit, but I could not remember the name of it:/
This does remind me of something interesting though. Back when windows 95 was in beta,.. I descided to write a program to manage autoexec.bat/config.sys and msdos.sys files.. I think I called it boot95, or something:). Well I thought someone might find this usefull so I uploaded it to one of the bbs'es I used...
A few years later (98?) I accedently ran into that very same program... on the internet.. how it got there I dont know. I guess someone found it usefull:)
It is only a GPL Violation if he refuses to send you the source after you REQUEST it from him. He is not required to make the source easy to get to. He is only required to send it to you via some means if you ASK HIM for it. He could, if he wanted.. send it to you only on cdrom.. for the cost of the media. Just because the source is not directly availible does not mean its in violation.
This information is in the actual text of the gpl. Its availible for anyone to read. Im tired of all these 'ohh but its violating the GPL' comments when there is no real violation. Come on guys:)
I was thinking.. maybe CG would work well. Much like Final Fantasy the movie. However, the FF movie has been horibly expensive to make. (10 mil so far?) Animated however,.... hrm.. Could do something like Titan AE.
The excessive Gs come from speeding up and slowing down..
half the trip you would be accelerating, the other half decellerating. We can travel at any speed and it will feel like we are just standing still. Its the acceleration/deceleration that gets ya:)
If they had it "running" on their site, modified or not, they are in NO WAY violating the GPL.
However, if they where distributing/selling a modified copy of acmemail and they refuse to hand over a copy of the source (It does not have to be directly availible, they only have to hand it over if you REQUEST it) Then it would be a violation.
actually.. if you slap in a highpoint controller, you could have the ide controller/tram all on one card. Data would only need to travel once over the bus.

Honestly, I dont know why we building a space station instead of a lunar base... but I wont go there
The future only holds what we are willing to make of it
Browsing through the 714 list (south california)... I found many bbs's that I once used.
:)
:).. I forget the name of the bbs package... It was pretty interesting though.
:/
:). Well I thought someone might find this usefull so I uploaded it to one of the bbs'es I used...
:)
One was a bbs (in cali of course) Called Jims World.. I was a Co-Sysop on that bbs for some time. Used to have the tele# memoriezed
I eventually ended up making all the ansi/rip graphics. However, the prefered interface was actually a windows client so I dont think many people had a chance to use my ansi/rip screens
Also tried to find an old christian bbs I used to visit, but I could not remember the name of it
This does remind me of something interesting though. Back when windows 95 was in beta,.. I descided to write a program to manage autoexec.bat/config.sys and msdos.sys files.. I think I called it boot95, or something
A few years later (98?) I accedently ran into that very same program... on the internet.. how it got there I dont know. I guess someone found it usefull
:)
This information is in the actual text of the gpl. Its availible for anyone to read. Im tired of all these 'ohh but its violating the GPL' comments when there is no real violation. Come on guys
I was thinking.. maybe CG would work well. Much like Final Fantasy the movie. However, the FF movie has been horibly expensive to make. (10 mil so far?) Animated however,.... hrm.. Could do something like Titan AE.
:)
Would be pretty interesting either way
The excessive Gs come from speeding up and slowing down.. half the trip you would be accelerating, the other half decellerating. We can travel at any speed and it will feel like we are just standing still. Its the acceleration/deceleration that gets ya :)
