Ok. Finally, the apropriate story in which to let out a little discovery of mine. Behold Morfit. Now before going off and checking this out, I really need to warn you , that these people shit me on many and varied levels.
Morfit make a verry half arsed 3D engine (which they seem to imply is up there with QuakeIII & Unreal... my ass), which the developer can download and drop into his or her app as a "free" 3D engine for use in games. The catch is, if one sells it:$20,000. *OR* One can give it away, and if the developer gives it away, it can contain morfits various advertisements, and morfit splits the advertising proceeds with the game dev. Morfit then goes and markets the game.
The game can be coded in Delphi,VB(ugh),C++ or some whacky little lang called euphoria. It all sounds too good to be true. Get your mates, grab a slab , design some levels, code up some simple code via the simple API and get rich, and it really is too good to be true.
Because if you allow morfit to continue what they are doing, evil WILL propogate (in my opinion).
Allow me to explain this heavy accusation I make. If one downloads the first of their published games , the ingeniously named "Secret mission", you will discover a nasty little suprise. *IF* you install it, it will automatically change your homepage in IE (dunno about Netscape) to a rather ugly little advertising portal that I won't advertise the adress off. It's really not that good IMHO. Oh and it won't let you change it back. Gotchya.
But that's the obvious bit. It at least tells you it's doing that. It installs a little file called (from memory, I may be wrong) "SYS32.EXE" in your/win/system directory, that in fact is it's Ad-jects advertising dll. Notice the half-cunning attempt to hide it by renaming it to sound like a OS file. It also creates a key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices called mSYS32 which points to it's morfitwebentrance.exe file (presumably to nuke any attempt to reclaim your homepage). And *from memory* it installed a ket to point to the SYS32.EXE file.
I have noted that these files do seem to talk to the net, but in the absence of a decent packet sniffer for Win2000, I can not verify that these are spyware programs. But eitherway, you *must* be clear on the fact that these programs are installed by stealth, and run stealthily doing , I think, some sort of network activity. F*k knows what.
And this is what the budding game maker can do to his loyal future fans if he/she wan'ts. I don't buy it at all, and it pisses me off, but I can't seem to contact the dude who put together OptOut, for him to investigate em, so yeah, it's pretty unknown that this is happening.
Anyway folks. Check it out if you want, and kick a fuss if you think it's uncool. But be carefull. Those morfit 'demo' games are trojaned. It's stealthy so it's uncool. Simple.
And I don't. But there are people out there firmly conviced that liberal attitudes about sex are perfectly healthy, and that pornography is in some way "expressive" and "naturual". Please tell me, what is natural about some woman being brutally sodomized by several men on camera?
Of course, liberal attitudes about sex are rather natural, because conservative ones usually need religious lobotomies to aquire. (tit for tat. Fun) Pornography however is about power. It's nothing to do with sex. Sex is just it's subject matter. Sex is also the subject matter of your statement, but is your comment pornography?
Ultimately the reader of the porn is the one who decides the degradingness of it all. Many a porn starlet might find your attitude offensive as well, and yae! It may be that you are CERTAIN you are not the offensive one, surely then the porn starlett sees nothing offensive about her actions too.
Now I might actually agree with you that the brutal sodimisation of the woman is a little off colour , but IF it's consentual, then if you don't want to look at it, don't and admit then it's none of your business.
I certainly would not like you commenting on what me and my wife do alone. And if it was an act you saw on tape (which you won't!) , then be assured unto yourself, that it's not the sex act that is pissing you off (unless you are a missionary kinda guy) but the fact it's on tape.
Ok it's cheap to do a word substitution gag when the grammar of the original post is funny enough, but.....
So the gov tries to limit rights, so what - i can't see how that is a bad thing in a country with far to much rights (and if you don't believe aust has to much rights their is something wrong with you). Sure, maybe people can just go to overseas sites but one liberty i would like to take is that some won't. And even if only 1 person does not gain freedom than cannot afford than that is a victory. An addicted rights-activist with access to an oline site is quite scary. Self regulation does not work, slashdot is not very good at turning people away. Perhaps if various austyralian state goverments with an eye on easy living had not allowed such an explosion of rights in the last 10 years (here in queensland it is rediculess how much in the last 10 years) than it would not be such a problem. [snip blah blah]
ergo: get a life.
Hell yeah. I think alot of us in Aust don't really understand the implications of these laws, and kinda don't care. It's sad. BUT, in the scheme of things, this is part of a wider scenario where the Govt is trying to push some wierd 1950's conservative happyland agenda on a modern forward thinking nation. The liberal conservative party is definately heading for a poll. The exit's and straw polls are polling the libs reeeal bad. Labor in WA has been full on kicking ass now there in and fixing all sorts of conservative rubish. Let's take that national.
And MR Troll modder: This is actually something I've been wanting to say for a while. Moding someone down for getting Irate for having his country bagged is plain unfair. Hey We don't all live in the states, and some of us just happen to like our countries. Yes Our govt can be pricks at times, but if someone gets upset at someone bagging the country he loves, don't mod him as a troll. That's an abuse of the mod system and it's unfair.
It certainly has lot's of value for users, but sadly it's often a little too hard for em. I've seen lot's of users who have stopped using red hat due to, after much calling the IT friends who recomended it, have figured to go './Configure' only to be told the package needs lib-stringloop-funinthesun-yat-v7.9.9.6666.h or something. Many just go wtf? and move back to windows
Which is a shame , because usually they really enjoyed their visit to tuxland other than that. People really do need to wrap their heads around the fact that a binary-*also* distribution is necesarry for those who don't know , or want to know, how a compiler works or what it does.
Wow.. That's the most bad grammared post I've ever made. Beer posts. Mod me down.
Translation: Turing is well known. No one *really* knows how to just generate prime numbers on a a=f(b) kinda basis (methinx). Thus prime number gzip interesting.. trivial.. but interseting find.
Fobonics makes interesting grammar too. My appologies.
No logical weight, nor no logical meaning... But Prime numbers are wierd wierd beast, and it's a verry verry clever thing to *find* one, and that is *literally* the only way of knowing them that is also a DeCSS gzip. Turing sure is interesting fella, but everyone already knows about the big number as algorithm deal. It's the coincidence or complete nut-job searchishness(grammar badishness ack) of the finder thats iteresting.
True, but radio noise tends not to be truly "white" (ie containing pretty much all sine waves in minute amounts), but statistically pretty damn skewed. Add to this the quantisation that occurs due to the sampling process, and you have only a random-ISH quantised and statistically trackable 'field' of numbers. I'd say though that actually guessing the bugger'd still be pretty damn impossible, short of knowing something 'secret' about the sampling process.
It's an academic point.
How is locking people out of doing stuff (Ie patenting) protecting rights of the individual?
Ok so maybe where back into + versus - Rights world again (freedom to versus freedom from), but the whole concept of patents has been perverted to buggery.
Ok, so while I can understand a certain form of algorithmic inventiveness as been "invention" , the fact that almost all programmers are inventors of sorts virtually guarantees that prior art will almost always be there, even if it's just in a nutty little one off office app or even in some dudes head ("Hey wouldn't it be great if app x did function y").
Business practicess should NEVER be patentable, because business tends to flow towards 'how do we get to point a from point b'. In this respect, if point c lies on that line , many businesses will *intuitively* flow though it. Patenting point c makes that transition from A to B non bee-line, and thus limits competition if only one business is allowed to follow that path.
And to top it off, patents are a government thing. (You don't apply at the local 7-11 for one), thus it's govt limiting freedom to do things.
Oh, and I must admit, that as a irish-catholic ex-pat I'm a bit of a Fenian at times (it's ugly and I'm working on stopping the attitude), but I gotta admit it, The UK govt's got it sorted here.
Gotta agree with you on that one. Comparitive to many many countries in the world the democrats are actually fairly right wing. Australias oposition Labor government and Brit's labour covernment are way to the left of the American Democrats, but even despite both these countries haveing labor in for up to 12+ years at a time on and off, neither country is exactly living under the hammer and sickle(spelling?).
When the democrats introduce a policy of "Collectivising property away from burgoise interests for emancipation blahblah blah..." then I'll believe that they are socialist. Remember people these words actually have real meanings outside of terms of abuse for anyone who does not agree with you. And for that matter Americans have a damn wierd usage for the term Liberal. It tends to denote "conservative" over here.
Damn right Zero.
I'm gonna foam a little here.... Look people. I know you are all pissed of at Australia. I am too. But it f*King kills me to hear people bagging my country in such stupid ways. The *ONLY* time aust military has ever been shooting at Australians was like hundreds of years ago in the Eureka stocade, and come to think of it, it might of just been the cops.
Allow me to rant a little. Yes we got rid of (many) of the fire arms, and it was a victory for democracy with over 85% of the population demanding it. Crime was getting too violent there, and by doing so we solved a shiteload of our firearms murder problems. Remember kids;- heres a fact. The more guns=More murder. We proved it here in Australia.
You can bag us all you like people, but please get ones friggin facts right. IP laws have been biting of late. We copied those laws of many of your friggin "enlightened" countries
Dude, the most constructive place to point that out is direct to the Australian government. THAT is what they should here. Sadly with Brain-drain being a problem in Aust (great higher ed system. F**ked research/IT funding) Aust is foaming at the mouth to get GOOD IT ppl. They NEED to hear you say that your not interested in Australia while we are passing brain-snapped laws about IP, and ESPECIALLY when they are doing it without telling anyone first.
Ugh. That's all I can say. It gets worse. Those nutty little Playstation mod chips have just gotten illegal. Which sucks because I backup every disk I have. 90 bucks aus for a game. Hell yeah I'm backing up. (never seen a sony eula btw) Cracking illegal? F*** that shiet. I'll do what I like. Hmph. All my base belong to them. I am soooo voting for Labor next time.
The wish of that majority of course was to not be shot and killed by that minority. Sounds fair to me. Fortunately and factually this has been working. Gun homicide instantly dropped a huge manner once the gun buyback was complete.

it's interesting actually that this ties in with quake and many fps (half-life springs to mind here) that quite often frame rate makes a huge difference on network lag in the game. This is quite counter-intuitive, but the reason is, is that many games poll the network between frames to update state data. Thus at 50 fps, the network is polled 50 times a second. At 25 fps the server is half as responsive
Linux development is slower than Windows development.
Probably true for developers with Windows experience, not true for Unix developers.
And of course now that Kylix has finally stopped being vaporware (rejoice!) the whole VB/Delphi thing that made windows such a breeze to program for is finally happening in Linux world, and best of all , VB *hasn't* which means we get spared all of the crap VB programmers who wouldn't know an optimised algorithm from an asshole. Kylix makes programming fast... if you know how (But it's just pascal, so it's not that hard, but some formalised tertiary learnin' helps.) developing for linux just got *real* quick.
I doubt that there will be much of a population problem really, all things being equal these clone babies would get reaal old reeal fast. The problem is, is that the Dolly experiment indicated that telemeres (little junky bits of DNA at the end of genomes) play a strong role in ageing. Basically, each cell generation munts a bit of telemere at the end of the genome, and at a certain point, theres no more telemere and the cells get all sorts of copying errors, producing injured and messed up cells (poor "aged" cells, and cancers and shiet).
I am not a genetic scientist (IANAGS!!!), so maybe some gene geek could fill us in here, but my understanding is that the whole sperm/egg creation process basically pre-fabs new dna with new telemeres, but straight out grafting of adult dna into cells leaves infant cells with grand-dad telemeres. So we'd basically have 70 year old 10 year olds, getting all conservative about pokemon and whistfully remembering the good-old days in pre-school.... then dying at a ripe old age of 11:(:( (Or something to that effect)

Hello my little friend..
Build any new scripts lately? I suggest for you to get the hell out of dodge before the neighbors find out. Mrs Robinson and Mr Atlers are not nice people.
Of course you also know that you should not tell people that you have a 40 node win95 network. Hackers , heck, school kids, would eat it alive. At least WinNT does not accept the escape key as a valid logon sequence. Not baggin on ya fella, I'm sure you've locked em up some other way
(Novell stuff perhaps?), but Win95 is bad bad bad news for business , because it doesn't do security.
Nah I think it's moderated. If my 'It's my FIRST POST here, does anyone have any SPAM recipies' turns up they may not be the wiser. An old style cassading quotation spam-out (Remember USENET? what where those monster reply-to loonouts called anyway?) could be in order.

Hello my little friend..
Build any new scripts lately? I suggest for you to get the hell out of dodge before the neighbors find out. Mrs Robinson and Mr Atlers are not nice people.
Have a great holiday..

Of course you also know that you should not tell people that you have a 40 node win95 network. Hackers , heck, school kids, would eat it alive. At least WinNT does not accept the escape key as a valid logon sequence. Not baggin on ya fella, I'm sure you've locked em up some other way (Novell stuff perhaps?), but Win95 is bad bad bad news for business , because it doesn't do security.
Nah I think it's moderated. If my 'It's my FIRST POST here, does anyone have any SPAM recipies' turns up they may not be the wiser. An old style cassading quotation spam-out (Remember USENET? what where those monster reply-to loonouts called anyway?) could be in order.
You are one scary dude. Betchya own some black metal albums too. :) Nuff said.
