  1. Stress perhaps??? on Disconnected · · Score: 1

Perhaps the high workloads, and the stress as a result from that, could qualify as a reason for that. The 24 hour economy forces people to work harder and harder, and limits employees to socialize during working hours; you only have time to work (as hard as you can). So when the day is done, what would you rather do: go have a party with co-workers, or go home to your family (or on your own) or go to friends? I know that I would rather spend some time on my own, than spending some more hours in a work-related environment. Because what do people mostly talk about on after-hour company events: yes, work! And for not really being interested in the company (not reading the company magazine): by being forced to work harder, and thereby increasing stresslevels, the employee is more and more alienated from the company; so he/she will be more reluctant to now more about the company.

Does this sentence say anywhere that you can't decompile the :CRQ software? No, it says that you can't decompile OR create derivative works. Decompile what? It doesn't say. It actually says that you can't RE, disassemble and decompile derivative works based upon their software. So be their guest, and work on their software... that's not derivative!

None of the FPS games I played (doom, quake, half-life etc..) are at all difficult to play. You can run around like a complete moron, shoot everthing that moves, open a few doors and press a few buttons (oh yeah, and press 'E' to talk to the scientists in half-life). Presto, game solved. I would like to see a game in which you must really think to reach the end of the game. In (almost?) all the FPS games you are automatically led to the end of the game, but for pressing a few buttons.

  6. Here's a thought... on Why First Person Shooters Beat Text Adventure Games · · Score: 3
In this article yesterday some threads discussed really interactive books; my own reaction was that I definately would like to see a combination of FPS (first person shooter), a good book and good music. In that way you would combine a good story (not present in current FPS's, sort of present in adventure games), with real interactivity. Suppose you could *be* your preferred character in one of your favourite books...

Ideally, the adventure would have to have multiple plots and storylines, the main characters should be 'configurable' to your own wishes, etc..

I do play FPS games from time to time, and I do admire the graphics and all, but those games tend to be very boring, because the levels are too easy to solve. The level writers seek complexitiy in just adding more and more opponents in a level, instead of adding more story and more puzzles to solve.

So in my opinion, the FPS is *not* the right way to go, it should be combined with the good elements from the 'old' adventure games.

Yeah, but if technique is far enough, why couldn't you change the characters to anything you would want them to be? You could make the story sort of like how you would want it to go, or just try out different options or strategies. You could even try this in a multi-user situation. A bit like a RPG, but still different.

That's not quite right.... The same problem appears in OO-programming. Writing the different methods for your objects is not too hard, must of the time it's quite simple, and the methods themselves are all small and easy to debug. The real problems arise when you try to let the objects interact, and you have all sorts of methods calling each other. I find that most of the debugging time is not spent on the methods themselves, but instead on the interaction between the different methods and objects. That's where the complexity lies!
