No, you're wrong. It's not the amount of work that forced them to take the site down. The last three days you could see that the story queue and article comments were being flooded with garbage; due to the nature of the story queue (open construction), this is a bigger problem than it ever could be on /. And apart from that there where continuing DOS attacks - the site was difficult or impossible to reach, and lots of times you would get an 'internal server error'. So it's not a question of hard work, but it was more & more impossible to keep the site up.

  16. Re:If I had there budget... on Space Shuttle Software: Not For Hacks · · Score: 1

This all depends on the environment that you're working in. In the Shuttle example, we are talking about a machine to machine interface - therefore you *can* write software that is bugfree, just because you *can* get all the specs. It is therefore possible the write down all possible situations, and write and test your software on that. Working in user-software is completely different: a) the software *must* have a degree of flexibility b) Nobody knows what stupid things users can do, but you can't foresee all those stupidities! So in user-software the total number of possible error-situation is greater, and errors are largely unpredictable. Therefore this kind of software can *never* be 100% bugfree, no matter what methods you use!

The problem at the moment is that nobody exactly knows who where living in that neighborhood; people are still missing relatives and friends who *could* still be living in that area. Thanx to the administrative chaos, nobody has any certainty about the total number of casualties. So nobody knows when to stop looking for survivors (or bodies), and I think that that's a bad thing.

Like almost everything in life: it has it's pro's and con's.

This weekend in a town in Holland a fireworks factory exploded, resulting in 500 destroyed houses, more than 500 people injured, and an unknown amount of people killed. Up to now they found 17 bodies and lots of bodyparts, but there are still more than 200 persons missing. So they still have absolutely no idea of how many people actually died in the explosion; are all those 200 persons on the missing-list buried under the rubble?

This uncertainty is largely caused by the fact that there isn't a central administration database in Holland, so therefore it is very hard to find out where people are living at the moment. So in times of a disaster like this, more information on the whereabouts of people wouldn't be so bad.

It depends on the quality of your products ;)

Seriously, it depends on a few things:
    a) Type of software (if it is software we're talking about)
Do you make a small program, or a business-wide ERP-system. I work in a company that does the latter, and systems like that need an awful lot of support. We support in the form of an helpdesk, implementation consultants and a rotation scheme of developers working on the helpdesk. All in all 5 to 6 people on a total of 20 (of which 11 developers)

    b) Quality of support you want to deliver
Support all the way, or do drive-by installations (stop the car, throw CD through window, drive off)

    c) Supported process
If it's a business-wide software system, that often means that companies can come to a halt if the software is not working; therefore you need lots of support.

    d) Rate of change
Does your software change a lot? If so, more support!
