    Just one problem with your thinking.
    This is currently affecting XP, which was based on NT, which was supposed to be networked and all that jazz. MS claimed a DoD security rating on an OS affected by this. Which really should tell you what they think of security.

    QT should be the preferred GUI toolkit of the FSF, the LGPL is the *LESSER* GPL ( http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lesser.html ) and the FSF advocates using the GPL even on libraries ( http://www.gnu.org/licenses/why-not-lgpl.html ). So any FSF sponsored projects should be converting now.

    speak for yourself, all traffic between my jabber server and my client is encrypted via SSL, and much of the traffic is encrypted end to end via gpg

    *all* of the latest games? no, again, Unreal Tournament ships with binaries on the CD(and I mean 2004 and 2005, not the original) ID ships linux binaries on their stuff too. World of Warcraft isn't exactly old either. Yeah quite a few of the games I are older games, but that doesn't mean they're not fun.

    Dunno what you're talking about, I can play all kinds of games on my linux box, NWN, Unreal Tournament, Majesty, Most of Lucas Arts storyline games(sam n max, full throttle, etc), many of the Humoungous storyline games(Pajama Sam, the fox set, Freddi Fish, etc) at least it's not like a mac, where you get to play Photoshop, and that number game.

    Ahhh, I misunderstood. you're using it as a server. well yah, you'll get less tweaking using any distro as a server. I've been around the fedora block for a while. If you're using fedora and having problems, please look up rjune on irc.freenode.net I'm more than happy to help people fix whatever I can.

    The parent I was responding to was trying to setup squid with an AD Server. That alone tells me he's beyond your normal user. I have it working the way he wants, if he wants it to log usernames, he should contact me so that I can help him get it working.

    As for normal users, no they won't have the skills to fix all their own problems. *HOWEVER*, when you are getting a product and support at zero compensation to the provider, you are expected to be polite *AND* to be willing to learn new things. Linux is free as in speech, not free as in beer. its just that with most linux distros, the cost is your time, not cash.

    you run fucking *GENTOO*?!?!?!? you bitch about tweaking and you run *GENTOO*?!?!? and a Pentium MMX no less... here's a clue, for your next computer, buy some moderately modern hardware with a halfway decent linux distro.
