You could do the same thing I do. Currently I use wildcards in DNS, and I ping unresolved IP addresses to a page which tells the user that their page was not found. Then give them the option to search google for it. so rather than reject it, I'll just be DNAT'ing it to that webpage.

Don't forget about X, it does that natively, I've set up completely diskless systems that run X, both as a dumb Xterm and as a somewhat smarter netboot system that mounts / via nfs and runs everything locally. There exist equivelents for just about everything that exists in the windows world.
They want to copy it because while it's not more intuitive, it's more widely used. 90% of desktops use WinXX, if you want people to use yours, you have to make it at least similar to what they have.
As far as I know they don't write a bunch of new stuff, however they fund Kernel development, GNOME, gcc... Check into what the actually *DO* have their hands in. the spread a lot of money around.
I know the CPU has the power to decode the 256, I'm not sure about 320. I would assume it can handle Ogg Vorbis stuff too. but I've not used the on-board sound, I've heard it's not too great, but you can put a PCI sound card in them if you forsake an internal 3.5" Hard drive(you can still have a 2.5" I believe).
$140 seems to be way too much for that... why not buy an old multia, then add ram and netboot it, or if you want, you can add a HD, it's got audio and NIC built in, and if you get the one with internal PCI, you can add a Live! or some other PCI sound card to it. You do still have to write software to control it, but isn't that what do it yourself is all about?
This is a plug for my employer.
I work at http://www.imagestream-is.com we sell both the cards and routers. the cards work with every distro we've come across, and the routers run linux. why kiss a vendors ass for anything?

IE is most assuredly not free, it's an integral part of the Operating System, and as such, costs $100US(more or less depending)
Well, it's already been done for starters, OpenGL and SDL provide cross-platform video and audio APIs, and it's not controlled by one company.
Yeah, MS has a C2(I thinK) rating for a specific config of NT. it's a bunch of BS because that config doens't include network access

What do you mean they don't make you popular, Software(and some hardware) companies have been doing that for years.

Zebra and gated both run on linux, admittedly zebra wasn't so good last I heard. but you can get OSPF/RIP/BGP implementations for linux
