"...what students learn in school is key to what they go on to do."
Who made this fable up? When I went to school - yes it was a long time ago - everyone learned on a VAX or a Unix mainframe.... and we all (well - OK, most of us) went on to become M$ - based developers.
How many Windows hacks first computer at school was a Mac? Many!
That statement is groundless, and in my experience, false.
...if you think you can go from no classes at all to completing a CS degree in one year if you are working full time.... nd I am referring only to the CS portion - the core classes are a whole other issue.
It just don't think it is possible, given the sheer amount of work required. A lot of it is easy, but still it is time consuming.
Just start taking the classes - it goes by quicker than you think, and with your experience you should be able to waive alot of the BS (and I am not referring to the degree) "Introduction to Programming" type of classes.
Besides - I have no doubt that you are a good or even a great programmer... but without the mathematics portion of the degree you will always be unprepared for the truly challenging programming. How can you model a satellites orbit if you don't understand the math? You can't.
There is nothing wrong about getting an eduation for the sake of getting an education!
...just the cost of the context switch can be enought to deter one from this.
Cross platform development just got that much more complex.
Add in the cost (not always $) of additional development tools, maintaining such a beast, and obtaining the required knowledge/skills can make your approach daunting - esp on large scale multideveloper projects.
I am the pureset form of the Open Source movement.
Stallman can lick me. The FSF can go straight to h3ll. NO constraints on my software. You don't even have to keep my name on it. I note how RMS has made a nice living for himself bitching about how software should be "free" - as long as it adheres to his rules.
I write my code. I give it away. That's it. (not that I have written anything very substantial, but the point stands.)
I don't GPL it. Or put any type of "L" on it.... if M$ wants to "pirate" it and make $100 million on it - they are free to do so. If some kid wants to submit it as her CS233 project - she can knock herself out!
I take others code as well. I ignore all licenses. Implied or explict. If it is code, and I need it... I use it. For anything I want.
Like I said... free. Not as in speech. Not as in beer. But as in "free for all!"
If you think your tasks are inane now - wait until you (being the new kid and worthless for anything else) get to perform maintenence on a 7 year old, poorly documented, uncommented code base.
Don't like the sound of that? Well, there is always the military....
I don't think that there are any realistic solutions to your problem.
It is cost prohibitive, and quite possibly technically infeasible.
Such a system would be very large and fragile. Forget building in redundancy... you are over budget before you even begin. I seriously doubt you could ever achieve even 90% operational status (camera, workstation, network, mass storage... too many failure points).
Why won't you tell us the application you have in mind?
When writing congress, it is best to send an email something like this:

From: You
To: Your Senator or Rep
Sub: H.R. 2500 - OPPOSE (or SUPPORT)
I support H.R. 2500 because (make it short).
Your Name
Your Street
Your City, State ZIP
==================
I mean, come on... do you really think they have to time to read your email and respond to every point? Just let them know your POSITION and how you want them to vote.
You can voice your OPINION at the local watering hole.
Never thought about it, but... do you?
Well... if so, I am already paying for a land line, so why would I need this?
...without getting paid?
...support Java in any way, shape, or form?
There is no logic to this.
OK - I can see not CHANGING Java... but they don't have to SUPPORT it.
I am no M$ fan - but Sun is acting stupid in this case.
I doubt that.
I just don't see aircraft carrier sized ships existing before steam locomotion.

...after all THEIR site kinda sorta... stinks.
...save the obvious one: that they can possibly eek (sp??) out a few extra dollars from a few uninformed consumers.
I never really learned how to spell "eek."
..accomplishes much of what Elipse is trying to do. I have even used VS to step through Lex.

I praise the efforts of Microsoft and the Open Source community to address these folks needs, but I doubt that figure is even close to correct.

What... they are going to chop off my fingers?
I use what I want. When I want. However I want.
Let them try!

I say ignore these people - and co-op their code.
...was something like "Anal Loving Fisters Corporation" most people would not have disputed the charge.... they'd be too embarrassed to!
Get used to it kid.

Personally, I like the logo.
I know this isn't what the guy was looking for, but oh well.

What part of "gross simplification" did you not understand?
l s/ 24319001.pdf
At any rate, read for yourself:
http://developer.intel.com/design/pentium/manua
Intel jammed two 486 cores on a chip and called it a "Pentium."
Gross simplification is a viable debating tactic, BTW.
You have people on your team who have been writing code for 20 (!!) years and need to go to someone for coding tips?
Sorry for the troll, but this says much about the organization you work for (or maybe their hiring practices).
...sorry - I couldn't resist.
...just your position.

...because their desktop is better - even if the OS behind it... shall we say... lacks.
...I guess that is all that needs to be said.
Their other products seem to be top notch however.
