The goats being the people who fly once every five years, buy heavily discounted tickets, cram a ton of stuff in the overhead bin, and complain loudly about every slight real or imagined in the service they are getting.
It indeed sucks back there.... but not because of cramped conditions, but rather the company one if forced to keep.
I went to Johns Hopkins. The difficult CS classes were for all intent and purpose applied mathematics classes with a "605" (i.e. Computer Science) prefix.
Some of the CE classes were hard.... oh looksie no longer CS.
I am 6'1" and weigh 195 pounds, and I call bullshit on that claim.
I have almost 2 million miles on United, 300K on American, and a bunch on several others.
Because of my status I rarely fly coach anymore, but I still get stuck in the goat locker when there is no other choice, and while it is by far from spacious it is not that bad.
The basic design of the 737 has been static for decades. The latest varients do carry noteably more passengers, but they are also larger than the older planes.
The SWA fleet seems to be inline seating wise with the older variants.
So tell me how are they packing "cramming so many people into their cargo hold it would make a slave trader of old boggle" on these places when the seating arraingements is for all intents ans purposes the same as it was in the 80's and 90's?
No coach seat on any plane has ever been remotely close to the size of a movie theater seat (which in my opinion are not all that big).
Want a big seat? You can get one, but it costs alot more or will cost you about 20000 miles. Or take the train - those coach seats are huge, and a fat ass like Kevin smith should probably stick to the train anyway.
Thank god for SWA for having a reaonsable policy wrt these fat fucks. I had some damn beast in my lap on a United flight once - the round trip voucher was not enough for that damn sweaty thigh in my lap from LAX to Honolulu.
Then that person works on a different floor from me and sends periodic emails about how they are "cutting edge" that are instantly deleted, and manages to never stop bathering about the relative merits of the two at company happy hours.
I want people working with me who know VHDL and C ***EXTREMELY*** well. The better be good with vi, and not have to rely on a GUI to configure a linux box.
Other than that, nobody in this building cares.
I don't give a rat's ass about their (for example) Java experience quite frankly. And why should we?
If that (the articles contention, not yours) were true closed source development tools companies would go bankrupt immediately, and there would be a huge migration of talent to companies that use free open source tools.
I agree with that. I have worked with nondegree'ed devs who were fantastic... in fact ALL of them were fantastic.
Which explains why they were employed. In order to make it without a degree one has to be way above the rest. Mediocre developers without a degree soon find themselves either unemployed or in school.
"... China is tapping the expertise of its extensive scientific diaspora in North America and Europe, tempting back mid-career scientists with deals that allow them to spend part of the year working in the West and part in China."
Translation: Chinese academics and scientists working in the West are, for all intents and purposes, spys.
It is so bad that others could be hurt after all this time.... and you wonder why you failed the check.
Runs PuTTy and Xming like a charm, best yet has a real serial port!
I guess this proves I am old, and should probably open up a tackle shop.
*facepalm*

I am talking Economy, not Economy Plus (which is pretty damn good in my opinion).

I agree that around 0.1% of the time obesity is not reversible by choice.

It was pretty cool.
I like their mice.
That's about it however.
Since the OP stated that most of their servers are VM's, I strongly doubt the hardware is terribly ancient.
The hypervisor could be dreadfully overloaded, but a setup servicing 30 people can be accomidated with low end equipment.
Off the cuff I would agree that the Domain Controller needs to be looked at.
Screw diesil. A natural gas generator will serve you far better and reliably.
If gas is available at your location that is. If the gas goes out there are likely far larger problems to contend with.
However I would probably fix your domain controller first. 30 people... 15 minute shutdown? What's up with that?
It isn't as if Computer Science is extremely challenging.
Buckle down and study. Sheesh.
nothing else seems to work correctly. SigmaTel audio device flat out is buggy, periodic blue screens, video driver seems to be extremely hinky....
Screw it I am buying a Mcc.
They totally break any semblence of WYSISYG formatting.
Not to mention that they will totally screw you when editing makefiles.
If you want to look at the code they way you like it... then I suggest you write it.

You'd fit right in.
>> If they can develop better without vi and using a GUI, why shouldn't they?
Perhaps its because vi is the only available editor on the deployed system?
They wore togas in ancient Rome, so instead of the crack you got to see the whole ass.
I could give a shit about "breadth of knowledge."

I have never seen this for regular employees, and I have been in this game for 19 years.
If this were true, then kiss Visual Studio, Flex, Rational, Clear Case, (the list goes on) good bye.

Ironic.

Christ that is gay.
Oh, back to the topic at hand. Rockstar employees: if you don't like there it find a new job.
