My question is this: You, as a young geek, are faced with a world and workplace that is recovering from the boom of the internet. Things seem to be calming down now, for the most part, or at least coming down to a reasonable level.
Where do you see yourself in a couple of years?
In college, at work, independently wealthy?
Does the internet still hold a promise to the younger geeks as much as it does (or did) to us, the older? Is it still as much of a wide-open terrain?
Distros are too big? I should think not. If anything (when compared to a Windows CD), ANY Linux distribution is big... considering that an ENTIRE SYSTEMS worth of applications is on there. Much less than I can say with Windows.
When I do a fresh Windows install, i have to go and get WinZip, ACDSee (image viewer), a newer browser, chat programs, messengers, etc. None of which Windows ships with (ex. the browser).
So, are Linux distros big? No, they are robust.
Windows is to Ragu as Linux is to Mama Spagnoni's Meat Sauce.
That is, there is a one-in-10,000 chance of anybody being hurt on the ground by a falling Iridium spacecraft, he told SPACE.com.
WHAT?! So, according to census.gov, the current U.S. population (the nation of which the quote speaks) is 276,242,855. And if there is a 1-in-10,000 chance of being hit (and hurt) by a piece of an Iridium satellite, then 27,624 people are to be struck, right?
That comment was made in passing, and I think it reflects Bush's naivete, 'tis all. I'm not about to blow this up into an US vs. THEM fiasco. The net is new, the net is scary to many of greater years. That will all change. Ignore it.
After reading all this Slashdot each morning, I've begun to have this Slashdot morning mouth. But now, with Kuro5hin, my breath is as minty as ever! Thanks, Kuro5hin!
Ha! The current top bidder has previously sold beanie babies. Quite the leap, don't you think? See his/her feedback here.

Oh God. I can't wait for the day when anyone can clone anything (only a few years off!). Just think. 70 years from now, scientists will find a Jerry Garcia beard-snippin' and the madness will start all over again.
This brings me to another point. Who would you clone if you could bring anyone back? Like what would Lincoln say if he were alive today? I'm pretty sure it would be this:
If you really think about it, the first OS has been the Universe, and the Universe seems a lot like Windows. Ever since 'booting' (ie big bang) since the 'epoch' (0 seconds afterward), it has slowly grown bigger and bigger, and no one really knows when it will stop. However we are all pretty sure that it will come crashing down and have to be rebooted sometime in the future.
If AOL is to ever make a net-appliance, what do you think they would have it run? They don't really hold that much of an alliance to Microsoft. So, i think the obvious choice for an OS in a net-appliance would be Linux.
So, no, i don't think this is aimed at you or me, but perhaps the iOpener crowd.
This is SOOO vapor! Even the vapor is vapor. You know, I'd also like a FLYING CAR, which i could easily make "screenshots" of with 3d Studio Max, but it's not going to happen, is it?
To paraphrase the Daily Show: "Ok John, this is a picture of Pikachu. THIS is a picture of Mars. OH NO, JOHN! This is a picture of Pikachu ON Mars! I've got two words for you: PHOTO SHOP!".
Don't get your hope up, boyos. Ham on rye, hold the mayo please.
This article, brought to my attention by NerdPerfect yesterday states that SANS found the hole on June 27, but agreed with Microsoft to not release the information until Microsoft posted a workaround on July 14.
Well, i bet someone is happy this didn't get out in the wild before then, eh?
CountingDown.com has quite a few little interviews about the movie with such luminaries as Harlan Ellison and Len Wein (creator of Wolvie). Check it out.
BellSouth just started rolling out PPPoE in April, and the software they gave me or Linux (produced by NTS) doesn't work so hot with IP MASQ. MASQ needs an MTU of 1500 to run correctly, and PPPoE stays at 1492! So, i used the PPPoE client at Roaring Penguin, and it works great! So, when BellSouth comes to your house, ask for them to copy the CD they have with them. It has the NTS PPPoE client for Linux, but they don't support it. Ham on rye, hold the mayo please.
I would go and check out eWatch before formulating an opinion on this. Both the BusinessWeek article and Hemos's edit of my original post lean heavily on eWatch's product of "singling" out users, but according to eWatch's website, they seem to be more towards listening to the public. Methinks the singling-out service is more of a gimp in the dark closet they keep. It's not real sexy, ya know.
Sarcasm, my friend. In the late 70's, everyone was sharing code, it was a small group of people. And along comes Bill Gates, and starts selling it. It was unprecedented, thats all. Ham on rye, hold the mayo please.
"All of us owe MSFT a measure of appreciation for creating an "operating system" which allows almost anyone with interest to become semi-literate in computer operation. This gift is world-wide and has aided the US in becoming the leading nation is technology." --a quote from a FIN site visitor.
A couple of things:
We all know what happened after people started reffering to New Kids on the Block as "NKOTB". Surely, MSFT is headed for the same fate, a breakup.
Remember the Smurfs? You know when they added the "kid" Smurfs and that damned puppy-dog? Well, the next season, they got cancelled. Cutesy innovation like these surely bode doom! Speaking of cutesy innovations, check out Windows Millenium. Microsoft has surely Jumped the Shark.
The last time I received a "gift", IT WAS FREE GODDAMNIT!
Does your OS breed Bolsheviks? Mine doesn't.
That is all, comrades. Heed the call of the "semi-literate" computer user.
Why must all net-pliances suggest that they be put into the damned kitchen? Is online recipe-surfing that important to today's cook? Does it REALLY serve a purpose?!
Put the thing in the bathroom is what I say! There could be a weblog for just such an appliance. Crapdot, perhaps! Honestly. Give me a bathroom without the same old magazine I've been leafing through for a month! Anyway, i'm off to register FREEJOHN.COM.
Thats why I mentioned the Everything2-sorta thing. When it first starts out, the translator will only be as good as current engines are, but if it is developed to allow "learning", and by learning i mean the application of grammatical rules etc from users, it could become rather extensive and deep. It would be quite the undertaking, but if enough analysis and design was put behind it, it could be done. Of course, that's like saying we could develop a matter transporter in two years if we had all the scientists and engineers in the world working on it, too... hehe.
Know it.
Love it.
