The problems I've seen from large companies is that they hire "marketing" companies who say they have "opt-in" lists and then proceeds to spam the living hell. Complaining seems to just get you listwashed so I just end up blocking them. Seems to work

Keeping stats of my email recently there has been a dramatic rise in the amount of spam I've been getting I've thankful for spamassasin to filter off all the crap.As a slight aside I found out today that debian charges $1000 for each advert (spam) posted to the list. Now that is a cool policy:)
Yeah true. By looking at my blog and online photo album (which isn't hidden) then yeah you can get a lot about me. Of course if you have you own domain name then I might even be able to get your home address/phone number without even break a sweat
Yes there is lots of detail that is stored about you, and yes it can be used to work out if you were a threat. However surely much of the same information could be found by people digging through your garbage, following you home from work etc...
The point I'm trying to make is that there is more information around that people realise. My supermarket know what I bought. Does that mean if the goverment saw that I never bought pork it means I'm Jewish or does it mean that I just don't like it?
As with everything its the analysis that can be worrying which can lead to the wrong conclusion
Until computers can actually understand our thoughts and do what we want them to do rather than what we told them I don't think people will become happy. Of course that would mean that we would all be Borg but hey...
When kids are old enough yes then I can see IM being reasonable as a form of communication. As for the mobile least the kids were talking. What I'm more concerened about is when kids are very young. They aren't going to use IM/IRC and I wouldn't let my kids over fears of security.
Its the 5 years old I worry about and would make to sure any kids I have will goto kindergarden so they at least learn what is socailly acceptable
I will admit that I use to be similar in being intelligent and that works against you. However a few years ago I decided to turn my life round as well and now I've got a life, a gf and actually go out. Perhaps I work a bit to much but I'm a lot happier. I just can't help but think though I should of spent more of my childhood out playing..
Going from what I've seen of recent computer history the booms seem to just sneak up. For example the net really became big in about 97/98 here is europe and it caught everyone off guard. Even Microsoft said "the internet isn't relevant" and then turned around and released IE. I'm sure there is going to be another boom its just trying to work out what it is
To survive in todays world I agree that kids need to be able to use computers but one thing that concerns me is that an increasing number of people are seeing the computer as an alternative to having human interaction. I've seen a few kids who are 4/5 and have no idea about how to interact socially. There more than quite and shy they are withdrawn.
There should be a balance and I would think that it would be better to spend time with parents that technology. Just call me old fashioned it you want
Now if someone would like to port this to OpenGL with the Nvidia XFree86 Drivers now that would be cool. I would never have to boot back into windows to satsify my gaming twitch
ALSA is actually quite nice. It works on more cards than OSS, allows duplex on some cards and is still backwards compatible with the OSS API. However I still feel that audio support on Linux could be improved. For example in my latop Intel soundcard which seems to only play at 44 Khz if using xmms. Now I know this is a software problem but it would be nice if it worked out the box.
We we arguing the Hello World program and actually came to the conclusion that if it doesn't have an output then it might fail. The only program we though was bug free was "return 0"
I really think its great to have a large number of apps to choose from but its true that sometimes an application is worth trying to compile/run. Some apps are great, others are shall we say worthless.
This is one reason I like debian as if you stick to the default packages anything you install you will at least know that the application is stable and featured. If not you can download the unstable which normally has more functionality but, by nature, might be slightly more unstable.
Just rolled a new server running 4.8 into production. Works like a dream and lastest CVS has security fixes as well so no patching necessary (well I guess for a few weeks:). The performance once again rocks.
Of course we have the ports tree which I think it the second best package managment, after apt on debian. Also I'm now running jails and they are stable and everything seems to just work. Which is nice.
Ah thanks for the clarification. I'm just so use to hearing. Look platform X runs on Y CPU's I never thought about it going down the other way though re-reading the article it is obvious what he is talking about
In the interview they said that NetBSD can scale but does anyone have a comparision between says the locks in the linux kernel and the NetBSD kernel? I'm just intrested in how high they can both scale. I know that Linux is now running upto 64 CPU's in the shape of the SGI Altix but I have no idea how far NetBSD goes
I remember the first day I sat down and played this multiplayer. The first level is based on a cinema and there was a great sniping position from a bedroom in the street. Sit there with the RPG blowing the living hell out of my opponents.
Of course there was the humour and the ability to chuck money at the dancing girls. Ok so it was immature but I was only 16 at the time. Gees is really that long ago.
Anyway I hope we get to see a GLDuke one day with improved graphics and hidden mode to make the girlies clothes fall off:)

The only company that I know is producing commerical drivers for linux is 4Front Technologies. No idea on the quality though
