Sounds more likely to be something that Toyota is going to try becuase they can do it, not to sell it or even really bring it to market. They put this out and people talk about Toyota for a while and then like alot of stuff that comes out at car shows, never sees the inside of a showroom. Just my two cents though.
If they did these same things in person I imagine the worst penalty would be some detention or a being grounded. Should it be different? I suppose you have a much larger audience(potentially) on the internet but should it be a felony. I think its overkill.

I am an accountant and I know I have always preferred people who did their job well but I may not have liked that much. You can work around personality differences but you cant work around someone being stupid.
Cannons don't kill people. (Unless they run them over). Gunpowder and cannonballs kill people. Just don't let the son get ahold of the gunpowder and he'll be safe. The article doesn't say that he built any cannonballs at all, and you can't just buy them at your local Walmart.
Just because you dont have cannonball doesnt mean you wont put anything vaguely round into the cannon to see if it will shoot. I know I would have done that if I had a cannon growing up.

Even though you will tell him not to use it unsupervised eventually theres going to come a time where his friends say something like "cmon we will just shoot it once"...... and then before you know it they are invading a nearby neighborhood...
