  1. The problem is stupidity... on eBay Slammed Over Levels of Fraud · · Score: 1

eBay has traditionally worked well because of the level of trust between buyers and sellers.

Due to some level of user stupidity, the trust system has been compromised.

For example, if a user signs up for an account on a website of ill repute then it will be child's play for the Administrator of said site to get access to this information. When you sign up for an account somewhere, you can only assume that they are encrypting this information, but it's difficult to verify. Just because there are stars in the web form, doesn't mean it's encrypted ;)

Now - what if this user uses the same username and password for an eBay account. After all users aren't that bright and use username and password combo's for several sites across the internet - because let's face it, passwords are just too hard for users to remember.

The administator of the site just trys username and password combinations until they get one that gets them into eBay. They look for an account with a positive feedback score that hasn't been active for a while and start posting items.

Additionally, combine the Phishing schemes that were mentioned in the article with the types of users that were just discussed and you have perfect opportunity for fraud.

Now - How is any of this eBay's problem? eBay sends out regular emails trying to educate users about the dangers of Phishing schemes. eBay suggests to use a unique username and password. eBay tries to protect both buyers and sellers.

My recommendation: YOU should implement personal policies about using secure and insecure passwords on trusted and untrusted sites. And for the love of everything good... Why would anyone ever respond to a Phishing email?

    Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

I think that everyone is hopeing for something revolutionary to happen for a battery. However, if you think about the past, there have been some great evolutionary changes. For example, NiMH was a great step forward over NiCAD, improving battery life, reducing "memory effect" and being more environmentally friendly. Now we have moved to Li-ION, which has the same battery power as NiMH with 30% less weight and no "memory effect". These changes have happened in last few years. Improving the performance of the battery & lowering the consumption of the processor are two major steps toward extending the power supply on your laptop.

If anyone is interested... I will give you some ballpark pricing info on Tornado. It ain't cheap.

We were looking into doing some development on the ARM. We were going to look at Tornado. We were going to get the Tornado 2.0 for all simulators and Tornado 2.0 for ARM.

The development tools for Tornado was $13,500 plus $2,295 for a single runtime licence. The ARM cost was $7,015 for development and $3,505. That brings our grand total to $28,050.

Also - that does not include the per seed licence royalties that you would need to pay to WindRiver for every machine that you embedded the code in. I don't know what this cost per licence is - again I heard that it ain't cheap.

  16. Windows, Mac, and 20 flavors of Linux on The Question Of Too Many Linux Distributions · · Score: 1

Don't get me wrong - I'm in favor of diversity and have run most of the major distributions at one time or another but...

In working at a hardware company and looking for technology partners who do software my eyes have been opened to the ignorances of the software world. Companies who aren't really linux-centric want to have a commercial linux product but don't have the time to test their stuff on a bunch of different flavors of linux.

These software companies choose RedHat and that's what they will support. For example... We attended Linux Business expo and had a couple of booth parthers exibiting in our booth. We were running caldera on our demo boxes. One of the partners threatened to pull out because we weren't running RedHat because they didn't think their stuff would run on RedHat.

It wasn't worth it to them to try and get it up on caldera (I could have done the testing and verification for them and they could now say that it worked on caldera if they would have given me 20 minutes - but the point is that it didn't matter to them).

The other issue is that some software companies release binary only software which has only been tested on RedHat 6.x. with a 2.2.xx kernel. It doesn't matter to many users if this software will work on Caldera or Mandrake (or even debian) because the software company won't support it.
