It all comes down to who wants to spend money. You'll have to put together one of two solutions:
1) Set up network drives for users (may need more space) and have Human Resources institute a training program for those on staff and to train the new folks on policy/procedure. Once each course is done, folks then sign a form stating to the company that they understand that they have an obligation to back up data via the methods chosen and will do their part.
2) Set up a very large backup server, purchase an Enterprise class backup software solution ( Veritas NetBackup Datacenter or the like), install clients on all desktops and back them up. No training of end user required.
You choose.. both can be costly.. but 1) is much less costly all around.
Not to get too into the moment... I have lots of distractions in life.. TV being one that I could do without. My cable company just upped the cost of watching TV by 8%. They did the same to my broad-band Internet connection. Next month they say I've been put on a new package which costs less... hmmm.. it's summer.. get out of the house or sit and LAN party. Dump cable and let them know as a consumer that they should wake up and change for us... we pay their company to live.
I went to DeVRY... 3 years solid.. 9 semesters.. partying included.. gave me a great well-rounded education.. a B.Sc... and a future.. I can always go to University or business school with this degree... BIG CAVEAT.. it's gobs of money to go... I'm still paying 6 years later.
If it's one thing I have learned from the IT industry... it's that your attitude rules your life and how it goes.. your job is money.. money's great when you have obligations to make or even to buy toys. If you have obligations in the way, work your arse off for money to get rid of 'em and choose a lifestyle which will promote happiness, health, and family & friends. You are here once.. it's your road.. steer the damn car already. And don't think this direction is any easier!!
Although this appears to be a neat idea. I can't help but get shivers every time I see someone want to put something up there. I guess I like the relatively unspoiled view (no I don't have a telescope) that we have. The Earth is not so lonely and we have thousands of satellites kicking around in orbit.
Wouldn't it make more sense to push for Mars? It's further away from the sun (1.52 AU as opposed to the moon 1 AU), has relatively little atmosphere (mind you there are the dust storms but we're talking radio here), and is the next likely place we humans could go for off-planet colonization. It would be a great precursor to humans coming over... and with an established communication network because of this and possibly other missions, it could encourage private industry to help fund exploration. I would imagine the cost could be the biggest factor that would prevent Mars from being the candidate... damn.. I love our mostly pristine Moon!
The company I work at is developing fast and effective detection equipment. Best thing of all it's remote controlled. No worries about being blown up! Somehow I don't think it's cheap though. It's meant for clearning paths for relief convoys and the like. See here: Foresight
I would recommend you referring to your state/province/country rules regarding the IT field etc within your jurisdiction. This is the best and only place to start. If there are no IT specific rules, you fall under the employment category rules for full time/part time/contract, etc.. whichever you belong to. It's also nice to talk to your HR rep and ask for a copy of the company's rules and regs regarding OT and on call.. before they change it!
It is VERY.. nay... EXTREMELY entertaining to see short-sighted, money-mongering, know-it-nots (maybe I'll patent that word) who think they can 'make money' on something that is based solely on the hard work of a lot of largely unknown individuals.. maybe they should.profile somebody once in a while... duh-oy!
Brought to you by Rants-is-us... ranting at it's best for nothing and meaning nothing.
Understandabily, we're frustrated... but let's look at it this way.. let's make them enforce a pay rate based on the resolution you can view... as a factor of 10.. $1.00 for highest.. $.01 for lowest.... hmm?
Lawyer says "Failure to disclose limiting hardware and software" is bad. Can you say.. freedom to enjoy a hockey fight in all the thousands of pixels available gone... no way. I say that the distributors of media signals should have to pay for the hardware to limit signals.. let people purchase what they want.. and watch those wasted dollars go away.
Is it too much to ask Micro$oft to realize what they are doing... perhaps I must say.. byte my arse.. and stick totally with Linuxes.

When working with the Raimi brothers, what is your most memorable (and funny) moment that involved a weird camera shot and a great imagination?
