Multiplayer Test For Return To Castle Wolfenstein
Mandelbrot-5 writes "From the Activision Wolfenstein web site:
"The multiplayer test is OUT! You can find it at www.castlewolfenstein.com, www.gamespy.com, as well as a few other places. Here is a list of other mirrors in case you're among the many who are fighting to grab it:

Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer pits players in a team-based Axis versus Allies contest for front-line domination, where multiple player classes must mobilize and work together to accomplish mission objectives. The multiplayer element of Return to Castle Wolfenstein is currently in development by Nerve Software with assistance from id Software and Gray Matter Interactive.'"

I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D on a 386/SX with like 4MB of RAM. I was like 10 years old at the time (I'm only 16 now...), learning how to make .BAT files, about how hardware was assigned resources, command lines, and also how to frag Nazi's in a 3D setting.
Nothing like bringing back memories.
I only hope the graphics won't be as crappy in retrospect.
Old games with new technology! I hope that an honest effort was put into it, to make it the game we all wanted it to be originally, not the one we never wished we had.

When my Appl IIgs didn't have a hardrive. I always had to boot off a floppy disk of some sort. Number Munchers was the closest thing I had to a violent game... I still have nightmares of troggles.
And then there was Wolfenstein. Too bad I didn't find out about it until last year (thank you emulation.net). I could only imagine how great these graphics must have been back in the late 80s. That's when Mario brothers had great graphics (until my brother stuck a marshmello into my Nintendo on my b-day...). The game play was simple, but involving. Did anyone complain back then about bloatware games and crappy graphics? Heck no, everything was pretty well equal.
But now we're half way between low n polygon 3D and high n polygon 3D, with stuff like FinalFantasy 7 being on the lower end, and Final Fantasy 9 on the higher end. If you played 8, you saw how crappy everybody looked; you could barely make out the characters (not to mention the crappy GF system, but that's another matter). 2D used to be good, and always getting better. When we went from good looking 2D to shoddy looking 3D, it really pissed me off. I couldn't figure out why everything looked so choppy all of a sudden (this was before I took geometry in high school).
But the good old days will never be back... except through emulation. I hope multiplayer Wolfenstein gives us something to talk about, not just something to complain about.

I remember playing the first Wolfenstein, and the second, and it was you against an entire castle, much less the bratwurst monopoly! Once you make it multiplayer, just change the name. Of course, they are probably trying to cash in on the name. Oh well, it will probably feature amazing graphics with ok gameplay, like most games have been the past 5 years or so.

for your informatrion, the LINUX version of the multiplayer test is currently in the THINKING ABOUT IT stage.. but the porter at ID, TTimo, has said to "hopefully expect on in a few days".. with the dedicated server to be out TONIGHT.

What type of shit is this? I bought Q3A for Linux for $50 when it came out. I bought SOF from Loki. I bought UT and got the Linux binaries. I'd gladly buy Return if there was a Linux version!

I would post with my normal account, but I don't feel like it.
What would you have us do, stop our entire lives because of that? If you are so bent up on feeling self pity for the rest of your life because of this be your guest, but don't try to talk everyone else into it. Some of us may not like the idea of terrorists succeeding in disrupting everybodies life so we don't let it happen. We will continue to live the way we always have. It IS possible to give blood and play video games at the same time.
However, I'd like you to tell us what you would rather us do. Do you want us to get up every morning, pray while surrounded by US flags for a couple of hours, go get breakfast, pray surrounded by US flags for another several hours, go get lunch, donate blood, pray while surrounded by US flags for another several hours, get dinner, pray for another several hours, then go to bed? Or maybe I wasted to much time eating...
Perhaps it is just me, but I like the idea of getting up in the morning, going to work, seeing friends, check the news for updates, etc. etc.
i.e. continue on with my life.
But then again, I guess I'm just an insensitive asshole.

I just came out of a game of it and I'm disappointed. I guess its a test so a lot of the criticism is just because of that... but its VERY laggy. I had a ping of about 150 and it was verging on unplayable.
It just doesn't feel good. It feels like a Quake 3 World War 2 mod with lots of latency added. Not an entirely new game. The flamethrower was impressive but not mindblowing. The rocket launcher and grenades are completely useless due to the lag (might be different for pings around 50... but 150 isn't all that high).
Quake 3 was much better at handling lag, so since this is a multiplayer test hopefully any lag issues will be straightened out.
For now, the DOD mod for Half-Life is a MUCH better WW2 fix. Wolfenstein's single player looks VERY impressive but the multiplayer test is quite disappointing. I suppose thats why they stress it's a TEST.
now we just have to wait for the Osama Bin Ladin skin to come out for the Nazi soldiers.

Gamespot have the WRONG version of the Wolfenstein test. Their version is an older version so you should download it from either Fileplanet, Bluesnews or 3D Gamers.
Comeon folks.. anyone else have a mirror up... The folks at Activision apparently thought 5 mirrors was enough. Boy were they wrong. even Fileplanet has a 200+ minute wait. I'm getting about 30k from pcwholesalers.net .. guess that'll do
My linux system works so good now I am considering wiping that worthless waste of disk space and crappy games into the bit bucket forever. Last time I booted Windoze, it couldn't handle my usb mouse and so I plugged in the ps2 mouse. This changed my IRQ's and caused my ethernet card to go down. It took me over four hours of rebooting to get everything straightened out and after that hassle I haven't screwed with it since.

where the linux version? I loved that game and infact i had a machine setup just to play it until a few months ago. That game is one of the reasons i love to play with computers! it it what started a new genre (for the most part), and i will never forget that game. I would love to play it again but i dont have a windows machine and this is one thing i would go out and spend money on for a linux version. most games i just dont bother to play because they arent worth it, but i want this one! ya hear me loki?

There is a lot of potential here, but this game is jumpy, even with my DSL and low ping times. Of course they went for the "Lots of Dimly Lit Rooms" map - it's hard to tell freind from foe, unless you're right on top of them. I'm sure there is some setting that will put little icons of the team floating above the avatars, but the game was so jumpy, I lost interest.

After struggling for a long time to get into a server, I finally was able to get into a couple. However, the game played so poorly that I was unable to enjoy it at all. It looks like a pretty cool game from what I can tell. I like some of the new features. However, at this point at least, it is virtually unplayable for me. I have no wimpy system - a Pentium 4 1.7 GHz (I know, I know, AMD is better - but it's a Dell 8100), a GeForce 3 (w00t!) and 384 megs of PC800 RDRAM, running Windoze ME. So I would like to hear how people with lesser systems fared if I could hardly play at all. I'm sure the game will be better by the time it is released.
Since a lot of people haven't figured out that you shouldn't shoot your own team mates, :-/ I wish that when a team mate killed you _they_ went to limbo and you respawned right away. Or just let you respawn without any wait time.
As it is, the single player game should be awesome.

That's because you don't have a current Wine build. I just did a checkout of Transgamings Wine (winex on sourceforge I believe) and it detected OpenGL properly. Smooth in 1600x1200. :)
Anyone figure out how to use the Stationary Weapons?
Well, it wasn't hard to get. I downloaded the test in less than a few minutes. Install went well, very simple. And I started it right up!
Pretty neat looking interface for configuration and control. Much better than Q3A, especially the multiplayer server page. It has all the functionality that we wanted in Q3A. There were already many, many servers running, too. All with good ping times, not all full or empty.
There is where my experience ended. I tried to connect to various servers about 30 times, and each time, it froze at the "Awaiting Gamestate" screen. Twice I actually got into a game and saw about 5 seconds worth of play, then got dumped back to the main menu w/o an error message of any sort.
So, yeah, I suppose it's just what we should expect from test software: buggy.
Concept, however, looked really neat. The readme file explained basic game ideas, and this looks to be much more of an intellegent game than the "kill everything that moves" type of game. More akin to CTF and team DM games, but with extra controls and character abilities.
I can't wait for test version 2.

Gamespot have now fixed their file. However, anyone who previously downloaded from Gamespot should check that their file is named "WolfMPTEST0915.exe", otherwise it is the old version.
Note that the old version still works but has some performance issues, more bugs, etc.
An update for those interested...
I'm still gaming on a Celeron 400 with Voodoo 3 3000.
I setup a multiplayer game and ran around trying out the weapons and so on, and everything was fine and dandy. I do have 320 Megs of RAM so that keeps swapping to a minimum.
Anyways, I think we all know that the manufacturer minimum systems are always too high. But for those still considering trying RtCW, it ran fine on my system...
The final animated (movie) sequence when you quit looks really nice, I just hope some servers with some nice bandwith pop up soon... I'm itching to try a 32 player game.
Also, as a soldier you can select other weapons, after selecting your class you can scroll the weapon list in the bottom of that "window" to get to cool things like the minigun or the flamethrower (which looks nice and pretty).
There's a total of ~120 KB/s upload on this one, so if it gets bogged down it's gonna suck, but I'm not really using it right now anyway...

As for a Linux version, the dedicated server should be released soon, but the client is yet to be done. I would guess there might not be a Linux test, but the final version is to have a Linux client.
If it seems really laggy, it's because very few dedicated servers have been set up. Although your ping may be low, the server computer is probably in listen mode, so the performance drops as the person plays. Within a few days, there should be a nice crop of dedicated servers.
Ironic that in this thread, any comment in support of my own post is moderated as offtopic. And yet, any politically correct comment that comes across the moderators' crosshairs in defense of Islam or any Arab is moderated up to insightful.
anyone care to explain how their defense of Muslims, and more importantly, Arabs is possibly more relevant to Wolfenstein than my own comment?
Oh, and a simple thought in response to the above post: It was a JOKE!!! I would further explain A)why it might be considered funny, and B)why it's NOT in bad taste, but that would simply be pandering to the ultra-serious and uber-politically correct sentiment that i believe is running around here on slashdot - one that i refuse to be a part of.

I was very underwhelmed by the test myself...even after rtfm'ing and trying it again a second time...it seems very hard to see if you're hitting anything or doing any damage or whatnot to me (compared to DoD, for example).
This is probably due to the fact that it is new and I've only played it a few hours...I will play it a lot more and hopefully it'll eventually start getting better (the lack of low-ping servers with empty spots is also very frustrating!)

I was cruising around and wandered into a Gateway country today. There was one of them demo rooms with the TV connected to a P3 930MHz with a GeForce2 Ultra. So there was the 3D Mark 2k1 icon on the screen so I bust it open and run the demo. I was floored by the graphics just in that demo. The first part of the demo with the statue in the rain I thought was nice looking, until I saw the forest scene with the trees and water. On the television you were hard pressed to tell that 1) it was computer generated and 2)it was being done in realtime. Then came the Matrix movie towards the end. That was just a badass fucking demo. When I first played Q3A I thought the graphics were nice until I got a GF2MX and realized the graphics were actually a little awe inspiring. UT was the same way. I'm fixing my game box so I'm not going to bother getting RCW yet but I'm anxious to play it. When the new Doom comes out I can only hope it is as much of an improvement as Q3A was over Q1. If you want a bit of eye candy for Windows the new 3DMark demo is actually really sweet looking. I think it's 3D demos are alot better than nVidia's. Too bad I can't make those trees my screen saver.
I'm a loner Dottie, a Rebel.
There should be. Making a game for ONE OS is kindof gay. The makers will hear my comment.
I want to see Linux, Mac, and MacOS X ports.
Otherwise the game is useless since I run MacOS X, and Linux 2.4.x.
Teamplay is like teamfortress classic - both sides can have ammo-dudes and medic-dudes (and there's no ammo or health packs in the map at all).
Defenders (axis) can use fixed (infinite-ammo) machine guns and can summon airstrikes. Allies have to blast their way past barbed wire, concrete walls and lots of angry Germans :)
Graphics are nice, shows its Quake3arena engine roots a lot. Player graphics are good, but it's hard to tell the two sides apart in the heat of battle (deliberately, I'm sure).
Ammo is very limited, and damage-model is more like counterstrike than Q3/UT (i.e. a couple of hits to kill). I can't tell if there is area-specific damage (headshots etc.).
I got pings of around 150 on my DSL connection, but laggier (and less consistent) performance than Q3 or UT with the same ping - I guess that's why they're doing a network-only test :)
Really the only thing I didn't like much was the respawning thing - that appears to be done in waves - if you take a mortal wound (i.e. get shot a lot) you have to wait 15 secs or so for a friendly medic, who can bring you back. If you miss that, you have to hang out 15-40 seconds for the next "wave" of reenforcements, at which time you respawn. That's a pretty good and logical idea (it's frustrating enough to discourage you from quake-style ramboism, but not as final as counterstrike's way of things) but it seems you have to "accept" your current settings (character-class and main weapon) while in that "limbo" state - I got messed up in the menus there a couple of times and missed the next wave, and so had to sit it out until the next wave (which didn't seem so logical).
So, to summarise, looks pretty interesting for a mere test version. Naturally, there's some bugs to fix and some polishing to do for a real game, but it certainly looks promising.
One word of warning to those of you with slower connections - I'm not sure how worthwhile this is for you to download, unless you feel very motivated to help the developers - there isn't that much life in the single map, so you might get bored. Still, if the DSL performance is sticky, I'd imagine the modem performance is really sticky, and I'm sure the developers will want lots of innocent modem subjects for their twisted networking experiments.

Glückwünsche, haben Sie Slashdot ermordet, indem Sie zum korporativen Druck beugten und Subskriptionen einlei
Before proceeding I need to point out that I haven't downloaded this test yet, nor have I really read a whole lot about the game. For those that have downloaded the test, I'd also encourage you to keep in mind that this is a TEST and not a finished product. Now having said that I'd like to be hypocritical and criticize where I fear RtCW and some other shooters of its kind are headed (please feel free to disagree - I'd be interested to hear how others feel about this).
Personally, I don't see a lot of potential for games like RtCW, and for that matter much of the future lineup of id-endorsed games (which now includes Quake IV as well as Doom 3) and a large part of the FPS genre as a whole (I'm singling out the id games mainly because they have a lot of publicity and they are the first to come to mind). I think these games might not be taking the genre in the right direction. Clearly there is a lot of interest in team-focused multiplayer shooters, like Counterstrike and Team Fortress, and I definitely see a lot of room for growth there, but I want to focus on pure first person shooters - the direct offspring of Doom and Quake. (Of course, RtCW has team-based multiplayer, but AFAIK it's pretty much just team DM rather than more heavy-duty TF type stuff - correct me if I'm wrong, in which case I'm sorry but I think my comments will still apply to other games..)
For most new games of any kind to succeed, they need some kind of hook - a reason to make me stop playing whatever game I'm currently playing and move on to the next of its kind. Graphics have of course been a big one in the past, as have innovative story-telling techniques as found in Half-Life (which I have problems with as well but I won't get into those). Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament had their focus on deathmatch at its purest, while Max Payne (though not first person I would categorize it with these games) has a terrific story. However, I fear that games like RtCW, Doom 3, and Quake IV are going to rely entirely on the success of their prequels, without offering anything new to the genre. As I see it, there is no reason to buy a traditional FPS for deathmatch anymore - the Quake series and Unreal Tournament were the pinnacle of deathmatch, with graphics far beyond the level needed (in making Quake 3 Carmack emphasized that deathmatch games have more of an emphasis on speed and less on magnificent visuals). I see no areas left to improve, short of moving on to other styles of play. That leaves a compelling single player experience as the main reason to buy a new traditional FPS, and I fear that these new games might end up being the same shoot-anything-that-moves and I-don't-give-a-shit storyline found in the early games of the genre. Though I loved Wolfenstein and Doom, playing the same game again with prettier graphics would not be very fun.
I think the best way for the genre to move forward would be to leave pure deathmatch to Q3A/UT. Multiplayer games will have to offer a unique style of gameplay, most likely along the lines of Team Fortress in order to succeed, while singleplayer shooters should consider themselves to be interactive action movies. I can imagine in the future developers releasing new single player shoooters two to three times a year, with minimal engine enhancements and shorter (under 10 hours of gameplay) but more interesting storylines, costing more in the range of $10-20 than $40-50. Gamers can buy the game, play through it in a few weeks, enjoy the story and the action, and move on to the next one. While Max Payne is the first step in this direction, I fear that RtCW, Doom 3, and Quake IV will be a few steps backward. Hopefully id, Raven, and all the other great FPS developers will prove me wrong.

Has anyone gotten it to work on an AMD?
By the way, Tacobreath, Hemoglobin, Johnny Cat, and the whole rest of the Slashdot Crew can KISS MY ASS of implementing the so called LAMENESS FILTER which still lets through GOATSEX posts likethis one and not letting me post something useful like the log of my crashed game!!!!! You are a bunch of DUMBASSES, and I hope you all BURN in HELL just like those terrorists will!

i clicked looking for 'net games and all i get was this "getting info for -1 servers" nothing shows up.. anyone else getting this?
That worries me a little. Anyone else have views on this?
70 k/sec on my 70k/sec dls
very nice thanks a lot
I've finally managed to download all 66MB via my lowly 56K modem. It installs just fine and then, to my horror, playing on the internet is horrible. Oh well, now when is the single-player demo going to be out?
Of course, and I highly suspect it, I may be talking out of my ass. -oqti
I fail to see how me playing a video game negates me from doing anything else. According to what you have said, I can either play videogames, or I can do anythign else... what keeps me from making contributions to this rediculous society of ours AND playing video games at the same time. That thought ever crossed your mind?
I also fail to see what being 5 years old and playing video games has in common.. I also fail to see how playing a game at all instantly qualifies as an obsession.
You sure do assume a lot about me... I hope you don't do that often to people, because that makes you the asshole.
30 player multiplayer was fine at 640 x 480 playing on a pretty fast server (I'm on DSL here). I didn't bother to up the resolution, since everything was fine and I was having fun. So, it looks like my trusty Voodoo 3 manages to eek out another week of existence.
It was definitely more fun than some of the other FPS games I've played online, and I'll probably end up purchasing the final version. Playing with newbies/1337 TKers never really gives you the full experience of an online FPS though...
First off let me say this demo thing rulez witha z...
One question though, when (if) this where sold in Germany how would they change the whole nazi part of it and wouldnt that be too much work so one question (asking all this for a german friend of mine, doesnt he understand im l-a-z-y) is germany gonna get this game or not?
I hope the final version is a whole lot better - but here's my complaints
A) graphics - landscape looks really nice, but the gun models are worse looking then the ones in Day of Defeat (half-life mod)
B) Performance - 11 fps - no matter what I did to the settings (all fancy features off, 16 bit colour, 640x480 I got it up to 13 fps). Mind you I'm running this on a Thunderbird 1200 with 512 megs of (133 MHz) ram on an Elsa Geforce 2 GTS - this same system rarely drops below 70 fps in CS or DOD.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
I've just stuck it in kazaa to share. put these services to "good" use wrather than porn & free music before the various evil empires decide we don't need file sharing.
It runs, about all I can say... it even runs decent on an underpowered CPU (then again everyother componate is above their specs)
Lag is an issue. I think their netcode needs some tewaking.
Just to let everybody know, there is a bug reporting forum available online here, just in case you come across a few of those pesky critters.

gahhhh, mind is jelly, wasting teenagers maquarding as stormtroopers with flamethrowers for hours now...
it's worked stable enough for me (amd 1.4 gig, win2k, cable modem, nvidia openGL) hasn't disconnected or crashed once.
as for bugs? some lag crazyness, but nothing out of the ordinary. i think a lot of kinder would like to know why i can take a flame thrower hit to the face and still waste them with a pistol... my guess? pure yank/brit bravado baby...
Its just a laggier version of Day of Defeat with Flamethrowers and Panzerfausts.
The flamethrowers are the only good part about it, also unlike DoD you cant go prone so unless you are really behind something big you will still stick out more than you should.

Custer's Revenge: The greatest video
Hi, I am using a Linux 2.4 masquerading firewall. Any idea how I have to configure it so I can play on a windoze PC behind the firewall? Looks like it uses port 27960.
This is what I tried so far:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING --proto tcp --source ! 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 --source-port 27950 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.0.3
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING --proto udp --source ! 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 --source-port 27950 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.0.3
192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 is my local, masqueraded network of course. 192.168.0.3 is the machine that I want to play on.
I can join games, but they are very jerky. I suspect the fault is network related because I get smooth gameplay when I start a local server.
Loki has 19 good titles. Which isn't bad. Lets see, tuxgames has 17 more actual titles. So we have 36 or so commercial, packaged titles, most of which are released. There will be a RtCW client port, so that's 37, and there are more ports available like Doom 1-2, and Abuse (for which you can even get the data files for free at the Abuse-SDL site.
With several thousand free games available, a couple hundred of which are worth playing, and commercial games on the way which haven't been announced yet I don't think we'll be lacking good titles to play with for a long time.
Check out ioquake3.org for a great, free, First-Person Shooter engine!
The idea of a sniper rifle is useless if we can't get 1 shot kills.
I've racked a few perfectly lined up headshots, and they live. O_o;
Aside from that, this test does seem pretty fun. I'm getting a good FPS from my Duron 750 & bottleneck ATI All In Wonder 128.
Call on God, but row AWAY from the rocks!

I'm running debian unstable with the latest wine,
the only problem is the staticky sound.
Disclaimer: I stopped playing games around the time Wolfenstein 3D was in it's heyday, so this question may be completely off base -- but then, it may apply to some other video games instead.
Given that both Germany and France have laws concerning swastikas and other Nazi paraphanalia, how do their laws affect video games that contain Nazi paraphanalia? What if they allow you to be a Nazi instead of simply fighting against one?
Support a few technologists in Washington.
The whole gameplay style is the nearly the same. If you can't play the demo and have Half Life, this is your best option.
omg, downloaded off your site at 500 KB/s, took under 2 minutes
:) Thanks
Much better then waiting 200 minutes at fileplanet
I'm sure I'm not the only one to think that a first-person shooter download is a bit macabre to be released THIS WEEK. I can still see the smoke rising from NY on my drive home from work. What the hell is iD thinking?
"Less than 8 hours after release on FilePlanet, there were more than 40,000 downloads."
:)
That's the Slashdot effect for ya!
Another question, where to post feedback? (please don't flame, I really don't know!)
Not to be paranoid or anything, but with all the people putting up personal mirrors of this, could a few people start posting MD5 sums. Just being careful.

Ironically, it doesn't work under XP for the lack of OpenGL support. Microsoft doesn't include much if any gl support in the 'WDM' drivers and it is supposedly up to vendors to provide anything.
oh well..
I have an Athlon 500, 256MB RAM, and a 64MB Radeon video card. Game plays smooth as silk in 1024x768x32 all features maxxed out. Mind you, I was just playing on my own system since the program couldn't seem to find any Internet servers running it..
Maybe it's connection lag causing the problem on your end? Try running the server yourself and see if it improves.
I was looking forward to this but why are all Quake3 based games so fucking FAST?? Lame. Laggy as hell.
Looks ok tho. But to fast.
According to macledge.com, there is already a port underway for OS X that operates well.
If you have OpenGL errors , update your driver (that fixed my problem in XP with a Geforce2mx 400) and also, turn off your secondary monitor! Every OpenGL screws up with dual-monitors.
Wow, totally cool. I can pay $9.95 and get the newest Loki ports of games that have been out on Windows for years that are crap. :-) Way to go! Tell me when Half-Life comes out so I can play Counter-strike natively without fudging with Wine.
Yes it does. If you are clueless enough to run something that has anything to do with 3D graphics using Windows XP base drivers that are installed from the OS CD, you *deserve what you get*.
Nvidia card users just grab the new 21.81 refernce drivers, and it works like charm. Most other 3D-card users can use their Windows 2000 drivers. If your card is old/crappy enough that it doesn't have Windows 2000 drivers, time to donate it to some charitable use and buy a real 3D card.

The home of the 3D Socialization and Interaction Engine
At least in my case. The default drivers that ship with RC2 don't include support for OpenGL, however the nVidia Detonator drivers install, work fine, and DO support OpenGL.
"Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus."
Does this beachfront scene look like it was exactly lifted from the movie?? I suppose that since they are both trying to recreate WWII that mant things would be the same.
Why RTCW feels like SPR: The lieutenant class character can call in an air strike over the radio just like Captain Miller (tom hanks). The troop transports and the huge metal X-shaped things on the beach are exactly the same. Using the sniper rifle makes me feel like Private Jackson (too bad there is no 'kiss my dogtag' action). Being a medic with the syringe reminds me of the morphene shots administered by medic Wade.
I would like to see a video of this game with all the characters named in the movie and have them reenact the first 20 minutes of the movie. that would be cool.
I guess I have to add something to make the lameness filter happy. First time I've ever hit it. How annoying.
Forward, retransmit, or republish anything I say here. Just don't misquote me.

If the rest of the game is that overscripted assualt style game it will have ZERO (0) replay value. While the graphics are nice, there is NOTHING special or even NEW that I could see. Granted it is just an alpha test but I was NOT impressed, nor were most of the folks I talked to. They should have kept it under wraps until it was a little more ready. On a side not the UNREAL2 alpha that is out BLOWS AWAY return to wolf, but it is much harder to find.
errr....umm...*whooosh* *whoosh* Is this thing on ?
haha, your a moron. I have Windows XP on a laptop, and not everyone has a Geforce or Nvidia based card.
By default XP doesn't support Open GL and that is a fact.
My card isn't crappy either. I Have Dell C600 with 512megs of ram, 20 gig drive, 1ghz PIII processor and an ATI Mobility 128 AGP 2X that runs Quake 3, Unlreal Tournament and Counterstrike perfectly.
As i said, by default. This *WILL NOT* work under windows XP like it *WILL* work out of the box with any version of 98 up till win2k.
you my friend, are an idiot. And no, i don't run linux, so this wasn't a dis against XP either.
If we change our everyday lives and let this disrupt our way of life more than it already has then we've given the terrorists another victory.
Local radio stations have a list of songs they can't play this week. Cowboy Bebop is being taken off the air. Microsoft is making changes to it's flight sim.
I feel for the victims and their families and all those whose lives were changed by this. I know I can not understand the pain they feel at this time.
BUT that does not mean we should show the Brady Bunch 24/7 on television and run The Rugrats movie on every screen in all theaters.
If no one in NY wants to see more bloodshed, no one would blame them. But to censor others lives and what they want to see is far worse than being politically incorrect.
Besides, who doesn't love filling Nazi scrum full of holes?

but it's only a test. fun, though.
Let's get drunk and delete production data!
WTF do this have to do with Wolenstein, except for the fact in WWII lots of Mulsims fought the Germans alongside the allies in N. Africa against Rommel
*yawn*
Iranians (Persians) aren't Arabs.
I've tried running this, but I'm behind a NAT/Firewall and it doesn't seem to work. I've tried opening all UDP traffic and still no luck. I can't seem to find any other support/information about this on any of the web sites mentioned in the readme. Anyone else have any luck?
In the original CW (not to be confused with Castle Smurfenstein by Silus S. Smurf), the graphics were (single) hires.
You walked around in a 2-d map and if you held down the space bar you could open locks on chests and stuff twice as fast.

This is my SIG. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
you telling me that the news whining about binLaden, Afghanistan, and threats/fears of war and apocalypse aren't violent? Relax man, in a few weeks or months this game will seem TAME
if it doesn't work, d/load it again moron. Oh, wait...someone is gonna d/load it, decompile it, stuff in a trojan, and then upload it again? You're a fool, just how long does it take you to get ANYTHING done?
After all, my dad playys Tiger Wood's Golf on his PC all the time and he still can't hit for shit in real life :).
What I don't understand is why IDSoftware.com hasn't been updated since Quake 2. You'd think Q3A was big enough to justify adding to it.
I see it uses port 27960 just like Q3 did and its based on Q3 but the ip_masq_quake doesn't work on my Linux firewall...
...anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
Get over it. Sure it's is horrible, but I have pain enough im my life and I don't need another reason to feel depressed
Dragon's Lair? Surely that was the epitome of great graphics with lousy gameplay?
Robotron though... I feel the sudden need to fire up MAME again.
While adding the server finding capability has been a great boon over constantly upgrading GameSpy (or whatever its name is these days), I do miss having multiple master servers. As is, I haven't been able to get a server list to try out RtCW at all.
P4+RDRAM. Suckers!
I'm wrong, so i'm going to be defensive and call you stupid! HA! I WIN!
[goes back to his corner and cries on his shiny new Dell]
The included README and html files doesn't list any command-line options. I assumed +set dedicated 2 for a Internet dedicated server, but I need to know what config/cfg file should be exec'ed for example: ./quake3 +set dedicated 2 +exec ffa.config, what's the equivelent for Return to Wolfenstein?
Could anyone who downloaded the EXE from an official site please post an SHA1 or MD5 hash of it? I am downloaded from one of the very much appreciated high speed mirrors, however I am prone to paranoia and would like to know that it's 100% original. Thank you.
that rocks

Enjoy! This game really rocks.
YOU are the idiot. Windows XP *does* support OpenGL. Just try changing the screen saver to one of the OpenGL ones, guess what? It works! What you meant to say is that Windows XP doesn't contain accelerated OpenGL drivers. Sure, it would be nice, but you can put some of that blame on 3D card manufacturers for not getting their drivers certified in time.
ATI MOBILITY 128 IS NOT A GAMING CHIPSET. Pretty much NO laptop chipset is. GeForce2GO is borderline, and even it is pretty slow.
By default, XP doesn't support Open GL if you try to run games using underpowered ATI mobility 128 chipset. It's outdated and pretty much maxes out with old games such as Counterstrike and UT. If it runs 'Q3A perfectly', it should then run the new Wolfenstein as both use same game engine.
Sounds like you have overpriced laptop you think you can use for serious gaming, and you resort to whining when it doesn't work.
Also, it is completely irrelevant if something works on "out of a box" operating system. Almost NO GAME runs on "out of a box" win98, as it doesn't have DirectX builtin. By this logic, win98 is not for games, as no games run on it "out of a box".
Thanks for the tip. I've not yet embarked on the huge download for my puny modem, and id have banned covermounting of the test, so I may not even get it, but did you notice if ZoneAlarm kept a record of the process name so you can verify it later? I'd really rather not turn it off.
"I Know You Are But What Am I?"
Split the download (it found a few mirrors). I'm staring at 306K/s sustained.
Never overestimate the intelligence of the individual, and never underestimate the stupidity of the masses.
I'm downloading it from ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/wolf/linux/.

Happy downloading. I can't post a mirror right now, but I'm sure someone will soon

my copy.
As it was, I downloaded it by paying for a "Personal Web Server" at fileplanet
no wait and higher speeds, $10 to download
wolfenstein as soon as I want it, worth
every penny.
Anybody who is still having trouble
downloading it should try KAZAA, Music City, Morpheous etc...
They have some of the most brilliant download
logic i've ever seen, you download from all
sites that have a copy simultaneously and
take advantage of the fact that most cable/dsl connections are asynchronous
with the frequency that I can see a download
reach 100+
but that's all another point entirely
And here I had such high hopes for a done-to-death formula in a done-to-death genre being a great game, daikatana style.
AC's cheerfully ignored
Hell, nothing works out of box then, but as of right now, without having a Geforce this doesnt work. Is that hard for you to comprehend?
BTW, i didn't buy the laptop for gaming, but it works perfectly and wasn't over priced. And yes, the ATI 128 MX works flawlessly with OpenGL and DirectX based games. I'm not looking for 100+ frames a second.
