Fuck google. He should read any of the many reviews /.'s had against the competition. In the comments of every review of every Archos, Creative, Rio, iRiver, and Sony mp3 player, slashdotters have already discussed the pros and cons of the competition. Found some tables from census.gov that make my point very well. From 1967 to 2001 the top 5% share of aggregate income increased from 17.5% to 22.4%. In fact the share of aggregate income for the bottom 80% declined. The top 20% increased from 43.8% to 50.1%.

This happened because while the income of the 50th percentile increased from $32,000 in 1967 to $42,000 in 2001, in the 90th percentile the numbers went from $67,000 to $113,000. At the 95th percentile, $85,000 became $150,000.

Thus, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

I like looking at weather.com's satelite views of the changing weather. They have "animated" slideshows of the last five pictures. Each is a savable .jpg. It would be awesome if there was a way to automatically save these and use a photo viewer to replay the weather for any length of time.

Even better would be if all the precipitation data and cloudcover pictures could be combined into a texture of the whole world and rendered. Figure a thousand or three polygons for the globe and have all the rest be textures. That would make for one hell of a detailed globe. The more memory the video card has, the better the quality. Ideally there would be an animated texture option too.

Lag death is particularly annoying. It can happen against monsters and players, so it can happen fairly often. If lag effects one person, it's likely to effect a whole group. Thus in a PVP battle things are paused until the lag lessens. Since monsters are immune to lag, it gives the player a disadvantage. Fundamentally, even though the penalty is minor, I've always found lag death such a drag, that not getting penalized when it happens makes more sense. There is a very real disincentive to use lag to cheat by the way. When running to a new location to teleport there when the lag ends, there is no way of knowing what humans or monsters will be there.

  13. Re:Actually... on Blizzard Bans Speed Hackers from WoW · · Score: 4, Informative

No they made a calculated choice. In most OLRPGs, getting attacked while having lag is lethal. It's very frustrating for the dead player. In WOW, when lag happens, the player can run away and they're untouchable. NPCs, monsters, and players freeze in place or stop appearing. When the lag ends, the client sends the player's new position to the server. The server effectively teleports the player to the reported position. A bystander at the new position would see a player just appear there. This has created a cheat, in that when lag happens it's possible to run past high-level enemies who might be guarding treasure. I think Blizzard made the right choice considering how much I've hated getting lag killed in the past.

I don't have a drive that can record any kind of DVD media. I have enjoyed playing DVDs for three years now. I have never had a disc break or become so scratched it skiped or would not play. They appear to be just as durable as my CD collection, which still play fine after more than a decade of use. Perhaps you should stop trying to eat the DVDs or fling them like frisbees. I do however have unpleasant memories of VHS tapes getting tangled in my late-80s JVC player. Some tapes started showing static in places. I must admit that once I got a new player about five years ago, those problems vanished.

You should consider getting a better TV if you don't notice any difference, as I can assure you there is. While I don't own any Disney DVDs, I've never had a problem skipping the ads and trailers either on my friend's player or my computer's drive. Perhaps your player isn't versatile enough. Rather than get a new player, try; inserting the disc, then with the TV off or muted, go add salt and butter to your popcorn. Dim the lights. Pull a comfy blanket up around you and perhaps someone close to you. Then start watching from the the title screen. If the disc auto-plays the movie after the trailers, hit "menu" on the remote before turning on the TV.

Getting higher resolutions, smoother framerates, and more detailed models help somewhat. I've never had the pleasure of trying out an FPS with three monitors, but I wonder if that would help? It seems like the disorientation and compressed FOV would be the problem. I imagine cramming 90 degrees into about 30 of my real-world FOV would make the problem worse.

As for the HD, make it so xbox live games will only play on the HD model. No broadband and HD, no Live. The Live players already jumped through the broadband hoop so they'll get the HD too. When the console finally gets an online RPG it'll make sense. Gamers without Live who just play Ratchet and Clank or Project Gotham Racing will do fine without the HD.
