  1. Re:Movie Theatres and Stadiums.. on The Future of Digital Cinema · · Score: 2

No I don't have HDTV yet. I'm not really familiar with the history of Dolby Digital and SDDS. I do know big budget movies are made to be shown in both formats or ancient stereo. If a movie is filmed in Maxivision because the director sees the benefits, it can always have half the frames removed and downgraded to the crap we get today. Just like the SDDS mix can be downgraded to stereo. Theaters upgraded sound systems because consumers wanted it. I remember avoiding a theater in Berkeley a couple years back because it hadn't upgraded yet to SDDS. Consumers voted with their wallets. Hollywood will incur extra costs as well for new equipment, but the maxivision system isn't anywhere near as expensive as going digital. I imagine if the public sees The Matrix Part 4 in Maxivision, the theaters showing it will have a massive advantage for several years until everyone upgrades. I think that plenty of stars and bigwigs in Hollywood see the flaws in current projection and would like their experience improved as well. I hope the lower cost Maxivision system catches on because unless there are some major breakthroughs, digital won't be going any higher than 2k by 4k in the next five years, and must reach about 3k by 6k to equal todays film.

I'm sorry....your point is....what, exactly? It seems to me Dolby and Sony went to movie theaters and said we have a new sound system but you'll have to remodel and get rid of the shitty front speakers you've been using for decades. Maxivision and Lucas both offer private screenings to compare their systems so how is this any different?

  6. Re:70mm on The Future of Digital Cinema · · Score: 2

You would think that from the article, but you're mistaken. Maxivision doesn't use any more film than current tech. It removes the optical soundtrack from film, which allows for a 33% larger frame, then moves all frames almost edge to edge. This removes the space currently between frames. The result is 48fps of larger frames in the same amount of film as ordinary 24fps film.

  8. Re:Hidden costs of Maxivision on The Future of Digital Cinema · · Score: 2

If you read up on Maxivision you would know the reason the system is so great is because it doesn't use any more film per second at all. It removes the gaps between frames and the optical soundtrack which nobody should ever use these days. In their place are 48 frames, each frame is actually bigger than the old. Current cameras just mask off the optical soundtrack, and this is easy to fix.

Since there are all kinds of benchmarks, which would be most appropriate here? I'm thinking heavy fpu performance. Most gaming sites only compare single processor performance. Can anyone dig up a benchmark of a dual P4 of 2.2GHz or thereabouts? Then compare to the P3s. I'm guessing this more than doubled their capacity.

If only it was 2k by 3k then I'd be all for digital. It was only 1k by 2k and that's why it sucks compared to film. When digital reaches about 3k by 6k it will have equaled films potential. In reality the optical soundtrack reduces the potential space for visuals, damn it. Why stop at 24fps anyway? I'm looking forward to 3k by 6k at 70fps. That will be enough so I can't see jerkyness at all. *cues quake players to bitch 70fps is too slow*

How can you assign value to a song when most of the labels won't do it? I can't get get track 3 of Soundgarden's SuperunKnown as a single because it wasn't ever made. My only option is to buy the whole album. So does getting that copy off Kazaa mean I profitted by $17.99 or $17.99 divided by the 15 songs on the album? Even Pressplay doesn't let me buy songs for a set price. Now if the labels would offer me the option to buy an mp3 for $1 I would do it. I'll buy my entire collection of mp3s minus my ripped CDs, legit. Also, what if I declare my profit to the IRS but I don't tell RIAA? I pay my taxes owed and I'm in the clear aside from copyright infringement.

Then Blair Fuckwad Project II came and bombed. Sony realised they FUCKED UP and went ahead with MIB II. Now if they'll only get back to Ghostbusters III and not fuck it up like MIB II is. I checked out that link, and then the company website. Their plan is fucking awesome. Since that article in Wired, they got their engine and their never-used-on-a-plane welding technology approved by the FAA. Their first big order of 112 planes was placed recently. I can't wait for them to go world wide! I can't afford their air-taxi dream yet, but you bet if I'm on business travel I'll do my best to fly these instead of business class. I imagine this could force the airlines to reduce business class and expand first class services. The unwashed masses in the back like myself will fly in the windowless part of the bat-plane, our tickets subsidized by the rich desiring three star hotel-like service and food, unavailable on these air-taxis.

BRING ON THE ECLIPSE! I want to fly in an air-taxi!

Just how far out to the edge do you think the seats will go? A roller coaster ride? No more than current planes do. The angle of the bank remains the same, only the distance from horizontal increases. I would assume the bwb design absorbs vibration very well. Emergency evacuation is a joke. How many emergencies happened with the plane on the ground and passengers quickly went down the plastic slide? I don't know, but most lethal emergencies involve crashes into land or sea at very high speeds in which nobody survies. If you read some of the other comments, you'd know already this frame is tested and existed for a long time. I'll fly on the plane with the cheap seats and good service, provided there's a good safety record. Maintenance has far more statistical impact than design flaws in crashes.
