Wasn't Dykstra responsible for the atrocity known as C++?
Really, I'm sure what Dykstra was referring to was the *old* style BASIC. Line numbers, GOTOs, etc. Blame the fact that it so closely resembles FORTRAN.
When I read this old quote again I realize, gee, Dykstra's an asshole. I would argue that anyone who got started with languages like, say, Lisp, Scheme, Smalltalk, etc. are brain-damaged beyond repair. I wouldn't trust anyone who started in a language like Lisp to write an OS for me (despite the fact (rumor?) that Boeing uses it in development of wiring systems on commercial aircraft (God help us.)
BASIC has *evolved.* Just like C++ evolved from a nice object-oriented C (which should have never happened; C is a systems-programming language that was taken way too seriously:^) into the impossible beast it is today, BASIC is actually quite nice, depending on the dialect. The GOTO in BASIC is obsolete (again, depending on the dialect.) In its place are decent while loops, subroutines, functions, and just about anything you would want in a modern programming language.
What would you prefer over a modernized BASIC? Guile?
I've personally only had minor problems; I've never put a UPS on my Linux box because I've never had major problems.:^) I suppose it depends on how hardcore you use your machine.
Whine, whine, whine. If it bothers you to see this kind of thing more than once, consider getting A Real Life(TM). It pains me to no end that so many people have to bitch and moan about the quality of stories, the supposed repetition of stories, and so on. If you think you can do a better job of putting together a site that interests you, do so.
Heck, why not try to get a job at Andover. I hear Slashdot is trying to work through some serious holes in the Slash code.:^) Oh wait; if you're working on Slash code, you can't stick to keeping the stories at the level you expect. Ah well; looks like Real Life(TM) kicked you in the ass again.:^)
What is with Mozilla? It takes the new honors over Emacs/XEmacs as the most bloated free software project ever. It's only going to be through efforts like Galeon and others that Mozilla will be redeemed. Many people pined for simply Web browsing from Netscape; the community responed by adding IRC and the ability to build just about any kind of app you could ever hope to build on it.
Well, considering that most of the TNG cast have begged off of doing another movie, the pathetic final episode of DS9 killed off any movie hopes, and VOY isn't over yet...it doesn't look too promising, unless they were to launch their next ST:??? franchise with a movie (a Good Idea, IMHO.)
Personally, I think it's pretty easy at this point to guess at the story line and get it right, at least as far as Anakin is concerned.
After Qui-Gonn Jinn was struck down by Darth Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi wins a battle with Darth Maul...by giving in to his anger. He's tainted by his use of dark-side power. Palpatine will attempt to turn Obi-Wan; he will succeed instead with Anakin, who is being trained by Obi-Wan. Anakin's late start in life in training, combined with Obi-Wan's taint, will ultimately doom Anakin and the rest of the Galaxy. The End.
They're both whiny, arrogant bastards; that seems to be the only other connection. Oddly enough, though, the big difference is that Mr. Ulrich seems to be in possession of a functioning brain stem.
If you get flamed and mod will be because you're partially right, at least. All Lucas cares about is himself; all those years of ILM doing other people's visual efects was just so that he could have The Best(TM) when he finally got back to his pet project. What was his attitude when Episode I didn't do so good? He didn't care; hell, the movie was for him, by him and his hired staff. I actually respect that, but I think you're right:^)
There was an opinion column/bitchfest:^) on kuro5hin a couple of days ago asking people if they get a thrill out of bitchslapping script kiddies. Now, these guys weren't script kiddies, but they did get in, and they did let someone know rather than just trying to get a root shell and doing a "rm -rf/*"
Nice to see that the folks running/. are taking it OK...a lot of people would probably be calling the authorities in Norway on this one.:^) That attitude sucks, because this is the sort of thing that needs to be fixed (it could easily have been someone less polite) and the people who made their way in did little harm...other than causing extra work.:^)
Kudos to Rob and crew for taking it so well, and letting the truth out into the open; if only everyone took such occurences so well.:^)

Yeah; without strong support from the music industry (good luck) that'd fall apart. So what's wrong with it? Same thing that's wrong with a library...someone would copy the stream and keep a local copy (like photocopying a magazine article or section of a book.) It's also a model doomed to fail because just letting one person hear the music doesn't scale well to 10,000 teenage girls wanting to hear the same teenybopper sensation at the same time.:^) my.mp3.com's model is probably the best I've seen. Sure, there's possibility for abuse, but abuse has been there since before online content. I've got a case of cassettes here I dubbed off in high school that I don't listen to anymore (been a few years); most of them were from tapes and CDs my friends owned, and I returned the favor. IMHO they sound better than a lot of MP3s:^)
I wonder if Stephen King's publishers are similarly upset that people get his books out of libraries rather than buying their own copies. I've read many of his books; I've only purchased one.

If I ever spend $200 on a *graphics card* I'm gonna have to shoot myself. Really, who wants to spend that much for a graphics *driver*? Yeah, it's technically an X *server*, but when I went to order, I stopped myself because, at the time, I had a cheap card and said to myself, is $200 for a driver for a $50 card really worth it? I couldn't justify it.
OFFTOPIC SLIGHTLY:
We should be pushing hardware manufacturers more to release X servers for their graphics cards. Even if they're not the ones who wrote the X server. Why? Well, it's a matter of principle. They ship a Windows driver, there's an X server available. Just because they ship it doesn't mean they have to *support* it. What scares me is that some hardware is now shipping with a disclaimer stating that if you use your hardare on an OS other than Windows or MacOS, you could void your warranty. I (think this is right; I'd have to dig out the manual) have a Mustek cheapo scanner that's "licensed" like this. Sheesh. Or maybe it was my sound card. I don't remember.
Their marketing department is bad about spamming Usenet groups, they flooded mags like LJ for a while with obnoxious ads declaring the superiority of Xi's X server, and now, they ship a renamed CDE whose installation breaks KDE/GNOME and won't run on anything other than a Xi X server?

Yeah--how many of the "big names" work at VA now? Holy farking shiz. My jaw dropped the last time I saw a VA ad with the "names" they had pictures of.
