I've had 2 optical Microsoft Intellimouses, and I loved them, except for two things
-- Both broke the same way within a year. They started tracking worse and worse until they got unusable.
-- They're butt ugly
Hmm I've had two since the day they came out and never a problem. Though I have the Explorer one (gray one...$70 I think it was). I know they have cheaper models out now which maybe have less quality..dunno
In the mean time, since it is likely that none of you will live to see the next impact event, don't worry about it. When it happens, enjoy the event from your spectacular view from Heaven itself, if that's where you end up. On the other hand, if you're stoking the fires of Hell, you'll be too busy to worry about it. I suggest, then, that you spend your time working to get into heaven and to avoiding hell. That's the only thing that you can control, through faith and good works.
Well now if you're Christian good works won't get you into heaven...only faith will (as the belief system says we could never earn our way into Heaven...its a free gift). But if you're Jewish or Muslim, then faith won't do anything for you...only good works and strict adherence to the law (which ironically the terrorists didn't bother to follow and yet thought they would get into heaven on the mere fact that they blew theirselves up...nevermind the fact that Muslims believe that some part of the body must remain to be resurrected on the day of judgement...thus the reason they are against cremation).
BTW I am only discussing the differences here though some moderators may think differently.
I doubt you could evacuate a country like England in a month - the channel tunnel is probably the highest capacity exit, and it's nowhere near enough. Even for a land locked country such as Germany, I kind of doubt the roads / trains could handle that kind of load.
At any rate if I was living there I'd like to know and at least have a chance to try to get to safety rather than sitting at home when an asteroid smacks the roof and kills me by surprise.
Until we can do something about an asteroid that is going to hit us, there is really no point in spending a fortune (that can be spent on useful projects) on watching out for them.
Not really...even if you can do nothing about the asteroid itself you could let people know so they could evacuate. Most asteroids are going to damage a relatively small area (in terms of Earth anyway).
I just travelled to the USA. I saw first hand a huge amount of blind ignorance and arrogance when it comes to anything beyond your borders. Sad thing is, is that these nice Americans didn't even realize how offensive they are being. I thought to myself "One of these days, they're going to upset some foreign country so bad, that the USA will get a collective punch in the nose right back."
Now isn't that interesting how you don't quote a single example of so called ignorance and yet you get modded to 5. And of course I guess if you went to say France and asked someone on the street what the capital of Uganda was, they'd know right?
Yes he did leave after the original Quake. The lead designer for Quake II was Kevin Cloud I believe. He is an artist along with Adrian Carmack. The two of them made founded id software with John Romero and John Carmack.
Nope...from id's own page:
id unofficially started in September of 1990 when John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, John Romero, and Tom Hall created the first game in the Commander Keen series, Invasion of the Vorticons. One month after Commander Keen was released into shareware, John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, and John Romero left their jobs at Softdisk Publishing and officially began id Software, on February 1, 1991.
Well obviously I am not them but I don't see why they could not have found a sponsor willing to donate their servers. I see it all the time at sites...like kuro5hin for example.
LAZINESS: The quality that makes you go to great effort to reduce overall energy expenditure. It makes you write labor-saving programs that other people will find useful, and document what you wrote so you don't have to answer so many questions about it. Hence, the first great virtue of a programmer.
Are you serious? No self-respecting lazy programmer documents anything. It's way too much energy...almost as much as answering questions about it later. Besides, they'll eventually figure it all out on their own anyway
See, before we had nifty things like water treatment and chlorination, drinkng plain water was pretty risky. Cholera, for example, was a severe problem in many urban areas in the last few centuries. So how does one get rehydrated without killing themselves? The answer, my friends, is booze. The alcohol kills whatever nasty microorganisms might be there, so going on a bender would have been much healthier then than we would consider it today. ('Course, to be fair, they didn't know microorganisms caused disease, but I can imagine common wisdom saying "Ah, a nip of scotch never killed anyone...")
Seeing as how alcohol is a diuretic they would have to drink a very small amount
Okay, the Robot pet site is slashdotted. But no problem, since the Google cache [google.com] version is there. Hope this helps.
Lazy moderators...For one thing, that link doesn't go to the google cache for japantoday, and even if it did, since the content changes daily you won't find the story there. See For Yourself.
It appears they are flash. Normally something like AdShield could stop these but they aren't using any kind of subdirectory or common naming scheme for their ads so at present its impossible unless you want to globally ban all flash animations. But I suspect if it continues you'll see software coming out that lets you block all Flash animinations except in direct response to your click or something.
Quicktime is also the only current multimedia format that I've seen which seems to commonly get video and audio out-of-sync. Not to mention the annoying "Buy QuickTime Pro", the fact that usually when you download the installer from Apple it downloads yet another "updated" installer and starts over, the fact that it shoves an icon on your desktop without asking, etc. I think I'll stick to windows media or avi simply because its unobtrusive.
If we get more rulings like this I wonder if it will be legal to resell Windows copies that are marked "for new pcs only".
Also it would be nice if the courts realized how stupid it is that a customer pays for a license before they have the chance to read the EULA, and that most stores don't accept returns on opened software. So as it stands you have to buy the software before you can decide if you want to agree to the EULA, and if you don't agree, tough.
I believe the Soviet Union once launched a system of satellites called GLONASS that worked like GPS. Are they planning to do an upgrade or repair of this system?
I just checked prices at a professional CD manufacturer (acmed [acmecd.com]). They quoted $0.87 per CD at 10000 quantity for CD, jewel box, three color printed label and insert. Microsoft either has a very sad manufacturing process or the statement "that the savings reflects the cost of Microsoft not having to produce another disc" is not quite accurate.
Don't forget those anti-piracy holograms or the laser-etched text or the security ink.
Anyone finding themselves redirected can use any number of simple DNS tools to find out the real IP (by querying a root server, then the authorative server), then simply access the site by IP rather than FQDN. This may sound a little technical for Johann average, but not when simple instructions are made available to them.
(This would not work with sites that rely on HTTP1.1 to tell them the name of the site, so that many sites can be hosted on a single IP, but that is less widely used than it might be.)
They could always point to another DNS server...or perhaps run their own.
"Out of the 94,000 Internet bars in China, 17,488 have been shut down and another 28,000 were ordered to install monitoring software soon. Of the 27 million Internet users in China, about 4.5 million rely on these bars."
From a previous Slashdot story:
"Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a longtime proponent of censorware, introduced the amendment...Essentially it says that any school or library which receives federal funds to build its network must install censorware. Since these funds are the chief way that poor and middle-income areas bring the internet into public institutions, effectively this means that only rich counties will have the option of an uncensored internet."
I'm so glad that I don't live in China, where the government attempts to censor public internet access.
While that is true, they have the option of refusing the money and not censoring. Chinese don't have that option. Besides, the schools are mostly supported by state funds. It's only recently that everyone has decided the government should be involved with schools. That's not what the framers of the constitution had in mind.
"gays and feminists are responsible for God allowing this atrocity to occur." -- Paraphrased from Jerry Fallwell, with Pat Robertson nodding in agreement, September 11, 2001.
Wow, that's Christian theology? Almost as good as that Muslim theology...you know, kill all Americans and destroy communism. Bin Laden said it, so he must be speaking for all Muslims. He was even on TV...it must be true! Those evil Muslims...no wonder the world is losing its morals. Why if it wasn't for those Muslims and Christians, we'd all have much better morals.
The U.S. has spent years trying NOT to make it easy for China to trade with the world (and join the WTO) because of it's human right's violations. I do not know how you can all of a sudden say we are "kissing ass" to trade with them. The ONLY reason we trade with China is to allow their people to feed themselves. Other than that, it's cheap labor... but we get that from Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Korea, Taiwan, etc (and any other countries I can insult today;)
So I guess Clinton selling missle technology was just so they could feed theirselves?
before? Modern USia has quite simply lost any semblance of morality and ideology other than the dollar and a kind of rabid Christianity. Whatever happened to fighting the good fight against communism because it threatened the freedoms we fought so hard to win?
Well I am not quite sure what you mean by that. Do you mean the US has no morality except Christianity and no ideology except greed for the dollar? Or did you mean to group greed with Christianity? Since you refer to it as "rabid" then obviously you aren't referring to it with any kind of fondness. Are you trying to say Christianity is the reason for the United States losing morality? Because if it is, then obviously you don't know what you are talking about. There are some Christians who don't have a clue about what Christianity stands for, just as Bin Laden seems to think he speaks for all of Islam. But on the whole, Christians are some of the few trying to uphold morality. And I'm not talking about these evangelists who don't know what they are talking about (God is punishing America, etc.). I'm talking about everyday Christians who try to live a good life. The problem with America is freedom gone amuck. I don't mean freedom as in a bad thing we should limit, but I mean people not knowing where to draw the line. People don't seem to know where to take responsibility for things or to think out the consequences of an action. People seem to think there is no such thing as truth anymore..but thats a convenient lie. There are many things in life that are two sided and people make it out to be thousands of shades of gray. And rather than just get rid of the bad things (segregation, oppresion against women, etc.) they seemed to think we needed to throw our whole culture away. TV, movies, etc. are getting worse and worse. I am not referring to games or movies causing violence or anything like that, I am just saying they seem to cater to the lowest denominator nowadays with a few exceptions. The problem with this country is the elastic morals...."if it feels good it must be right". So morals and laws that worked for hundreds of years aren't good enough for us anymore. Go figure
I highly recommend checking out the DomainNameBuyersGuide [domainname...sguide.com] to see how various registrars rank among various dimensions (legal, pricing, etc). This is how I found my excellent registrar, DomainDiscover [domaindiscover.com], which has proved to be great.
For the record, I too, am a huge fane of EasyDNS; they provide 4 secondary DNS sites and 2 backup MX for $15 yearly.
That site is a joke. They don't even have a third of the ICANN-accredited registrars. I emailed them a few about 6 months ago and they didn't even bother to check them out.

Probably because of all the refugees running for their lives from wars and oppresive regimes.

Id have no problem if flash was outlawed since when have you seen it used that its not tacky and didnt need to be used?
Why Flash has many good uses. Just look here.

If there is something life threatening about a computer being hacked, then perhaps the computer shouldn't be hooked up to the Internet.

I have a better idea...have Microsoft give 1.1 billion in cash to the schools and let the schools spend it however they want.
