  1. Hardware vs software on MS Introduces Optical Mouse · · Score: 1

It's really a pity that Microsoft can't bring it's software build quality on par with it's hardware ability.

I really like the intellimouse, and the keyboard. Yeah, neither of them are really innovative, but still, they are well made. (I know the mouse was designed with SolidWorks, and it shows)

And with their "only sold with hardware" deals to computer stores, you can really pick them up on the cheap. That is, if you know folks who need a new HDD, or MOBO.

If you want to play it safe, go for the even numbers (as a newbie, it's probably your safest shot.) If you really like bleeding edge, and want to help out with bug reports, then by all means go for the odd numbered 'developer releases'

Norton Anti-Virus will detect and kill B.O.

You probably don't run a very large place, and given your experience, you're probably top dog. Something you might want to ponder is that, for raw file serving, RedHat5.1, loaded with Samba, has about two and a half times the file serving ability as NT4 on the same hardware.

RH+Samba is free, a couple of dollars from the LinuxMall, or $50 from RedHat. You can use it on as many machines as you like, and not violate copyright. Service contracts can be purchased.
Yeah, it's a pain to learn a new O.S., but since Linux is really Unix without the copyright payment, it's worth learning. Unix, being 30 years old has quite a history, and plenty of tools available. It has resurfaced, mostly due to uptimes measured in months and years, as opposed to days for NT.

Linux is becoming the Unix standard as hardware manufactures slap their forheads and say "Why bother maintiaining our version, when we can just release the the hardware specs and Linux people will develop it for free?"

It's pretty easy to make a user account, and then you'll get at least some respect. At least leave an e-mail address and a nickname.

The first step to learning is to say "I don't know this."

  18. Utah Mentality on Internet Censorship in Utah Schools & Libraries · · Score: 2

Living out here, I can tell you that, should the ACLU win the fight to un-censor the net, Utah schools will simply shut off all net access.

The buzzwords out here, like pretty much anywhere else, are: don't endanger the children.

Pornography is believed to endanger children out here. Should (hypothetically) censorship-free net access somehow be mandated, many parents will pull their children from school.

Considering the funding that schools would lose, the schools will simply figure some other way to keep the kids from the internet.

*************** Here follows my personal views, and Lest ye think otherwise, I've got a growing collection of magazines and videos that feature the undraped feminine form divine, and I'm all for porn.*******************

All in all, it's probably much better in this situation to just let the schools throw a censoring program on. (Do you REALLY want 10yr olds looking at genital-mutilation or bestiality sites? I've seen some. They're not for kids.)

The Mormons didn't come here voluntarily, and they've never forgotten it. Ever since the U.S. Army invaded Utah to put down the Mormon Rebellion (and lost), these people have hated the federal government.

Just treat Utahns like a damaged section of the Internet, and ignore them.
