Apple made a point of showing a slide in the WWDC keynote that showed mac sales growing by 28% (IIRC) and the pc market shrinking 1% and telling everyone how the mac outperformed the pc market every quarter for the past 5 years. They did this to deliberately draw attention to their booming mac sales that are never mentioned only because they are eclipsed by iOS' explosive growth. These are not the actions of someone who wants to get out of the personal computer market.
OSX isn't going anywhere. It's an article from PC "Pro" for god's sake, you'd get better advice on OSX from a vagrant in the street. Look at the summary :
"When Steve Jobs announced last night that he was 'going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device,' it was the clearest indication yet that Apple is phasing out Mac OS X, argues PC Pro's Barry Collins. 'Over the past couple of months, there have been continual rumours that Apple is testing the iPad's A5 processor in its MacBook range, suggesting Apple believes iOS could stretch further than smartphones and tablets,' Collins argues. Plus, Apple would take a 30% cut on all Mac software if it mandated downloads via the App Store only. 'The only part of Apple's portfolio where iOS doesn't make sense is in the high-end. Yet, Apple's already discontinued its Xserve range of servers and... it's almost exclusively fixated on the consumer market,' he argues."
Yeah, sounds like a solid bunch of facts to me (sic).
I'm a european so take the following as you will. IMHO the real problem seems to be that she took a well-known historical anecdote and worded as so that the meaning was altered: taking a story about a guy warning people an invading force was on the way and making it seem like this was some NRA crackpot warning people that "the gubment's coming to take your guns." You can nitpick the details but that seems historically inaccurate to me, a twisting of words to fit a version of history more appealing to her voters.
Actually it was 199*3* when AOL added Usenet to its service, and thus began the never-ending influx of newbies.
I started posting on Usenet back in 1988 using local BBS feeds. The SYSop would download the messages at midnight, and his users would reply to the posts, and then wait a full day to see the answer.
Jeez, I get annoyed when the mobile connection on my smartphone doesn't work for 15 minutes. That really makes you appreciate how hyper-connected we are now.
There's a whole array of vision problems out there. For instance this is how a person with keratoconus sees text on his/her pc. You can still function visually (with aids like zoom, increased contrast, etc.) but try figuring out a captcha with that vision.
Well thank god you logged in long enough to register your disgust. How else would we have know to be appropriately sad for being deprived of your magnificent presence ?
Really, I mean laptop manufacturers give advice like this :
"Laptops generate a surprising amount of heat, and are engineered to extremely tight thermal tolerances. That means even the shortest period of prolonged heat can harm them. To best take care of your laptop keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heaters or radiators."
The heat is going to kill the battery. Not that it matters this is a "design concept" and has pretty much a zero chance of become a real product.
There's a grey area. I just looked the thing in more detail (who reads this stuff anyway?), a film distributors website says :
"De wetgeving staat deze vertoningen buiten de “huiselijke kring” enkel toe indien er toestemming is van de rechthebbenden van het getoonde audiovisuele werk (art. 18 en 39). Het heeft geen enkel belang of de voorstelling al dan niet gratis of al dan niet toegankelijk voor publiek is. Enkel voorstellingen die een concurrentie zouden betekenen voor een commerciële bioscoop zijn verboden."
"The law permits showings outside of the "home situation" only with the permission of the rights holder of the shown audiovisual work (art. 18 & 39.) It does not matter if the showing is free nor if it is publicly accessible. Only showings that would constitute competition to a commercial cinema are forbidden."
This might be just for Belgium, I don't know. So when do you start to compete with a commercial viewing ? When you have some friends over, when you have all the neighbours round ? Best to just ignore it all and spare yourself the headache:-)
Besides isn't there already a law against this ? I know in Europe at least on rentals there is always a disclaimer to the effect that only you are allowed to watch it (with your family) but can't use it to share with friends or show in a public setting.
"Real companies" don't have a chance when their government actively pursues a policy of isolation from the rest of the world. They'd have as much chance of independently setting up business relations as would a company in North Korea or the old USSR.
Make my own internet. With hookers. and blackjack.
Wait. forget the hookers and blackjack. those are illegal in iran.
No but you mary someone for half an hour (in exchange for an appropriate "dowry" of course) then go out into the street for some three card monte. So it's all good.
Who ever overthrew their government without outside help ? Even the US got some support from France (most famously from Lafayette.) We should care what happens on the inside.
Except in this case the field in question was used for research by the Ghent University and the idiots criminals who destroyed it say they did it to "avoid contamination of surrounding fields." No mention of your objection, which is one of the few that actually make sense in the whole debate.
If all you need to do is see the available networks and their signal strength/noise level on OSX you can just use the Airport command line utility, if you want to sniff there's always tcpdump.
What annoys me is why these devices don't just use the network that is available. I spent a lot of time looking for a baby monitor (something without a camera) that could just send over my existing wireless network but came up empty.
I'm assuming they had at least 2 physical copies of the procedure manuals on board before in case someone spilled coffee on one or something. Now they can replace 1 with an easier to use digital version and keep the paper backup copy in the supply closet.
I can see the ads now : "Meet local girls in Pacific Ocean, right now." (shamelessly ripped off from the ever relevant xkcd)
Anyway your argument is false for a couple of reasons: - this is Apple, not Google. Apple isn't an advertising company and doesn't send home your browsing behavior AFAIK. - they need not give the iPads access to the internet. - they can block anything they don't want to leave the internal network using a firewall, which they should already be doing.
HTC was one of the most important Windows smartphone makers before they went Android so this is probably fuck off money they are paying MS. As in "please take this money and fuck off without going over our past agreements with a fine tooth comb looking for reasons to sue us."
I hate American style "philantropism". It seems so midieval to me: scrounge, cheat and bully your way to a fortune beyond all reason and then become a patron and throw your weight around for the applause. Well I guess we got some nice art out of it when the Medici's did it and we might get some medical advances out of Gates sponsorships but don't expect any kudos from me, the money would have done more good if it had stayed in the real economy.

There's nothing wrong with hating people who try to falsify history, nothing good can come of it.

AIX, the Advanced Iranian eXecutive
Would that be the jew infested US satan, or the rain stealing EU you think they want to communicate with ?

Jobs has headed 3 companies to success: Apple (2 different occasions), Next and Pixar. Gates on the other hand is a one-trick pony.
