What movie theaters are you going to? And more importantly, where are they getting their prints?
Your local theater has 5 channels and a sub. I promise. If you're lucky, you *might* have Surround EX, which entitles you to a pair of additional rear speakers. But guess what - you probably almost never hear them, because there are very few movies mixed in Surround EX.
Most of the documentaries you see are mixed to stereo. Most other movies are mixed to 6-channel surround. It's that easy.
All those other speakers you see? They're not more channels. They're for better coverage in huge auditoriums.
Okay- I'm not part of this, but I know the story, so I'm going to tell it.
A few guys at tep used to have a toilet to which a pulley system and a dot matrix printer were attached.
Now, obviously, the printer would pull the string, which would pull the handle, etc.. a bit like Mouse Trap. The best part of this- there was a link on their web page by which one could send a print job to the printer. Combine that with a laptop/wireless connection, and who needs anything else...
Its not like 80 other sites as well as a hel of a lot of mailing lists havent annouced it as well. The slashdot community isn't the only linux-using community out there, in case you were not aware.
If you dont want to be responsible for kernel.org getting bogged down, dont click on the link. I have the patience to wait a fe days, maybe you do, I guess many dont. Either way, you are not responisble for the actions of the slashdot community.
And if you are going to post garbage like that, at least have the testicular fortitude to log in and do i.

This is true.
IMHO, the top two reasons viruses are propagted so massivly are AOL and Micro$oft outlook/outlook 2000.
These, combined with an incredible lack of discretion on the part of the end user, allow viruses to have a continued existance.
This type of p2p network would be even more highly trusted than AOL and outlook, solely because of its purpose- therefore making it a huge target for those hell bent on propagating their virus throughout the world. The number of checks that a file would have to go through would be prohibitive, and how do you explain these things to the average end user anyway? How do you tell them that they can't update their virus defs because their virus defs are viruses? I just cant see this kind of thing working. We need to be trating comptuer viruses like we treat AIDS. Educate people about what is safe to download and run, create keys and programs that are easy to use to check those keys.

Hey now... Dont be trashing PICO.
Instead of looking at what features it doesnt have, look at what it doesnt DO
It doesnt try to underline every word when I write in german. It doesnt try to fix my grammer for me when I dont want it fixed. In general, it doesnt treat me like a child.
And most importantly- Not that it has ever crashed on me, but were it to crash, I have severe doubts about it bringing down my whole machine.

uhh.. actually, you're wrong
Kinda.
germans, when making sentences such as the above, often drop verbs like sprechen, gehen, etc..
"Wenn Sie Deutsch nicht sprechen koennen" can legitimately become "Wenn Sie Deutsch nicht koennen", and often does.
I have to go home would be...
Ich muss nach Hause -or-
Ich muss nach Hause gehen.
As for word order, because there is a comma, the correct second clause would be "bitte babelfish benutzen."
This is, of course, saying that germans are consistant in grammer, and while in high german they are, from dialect to dialect things change massively..
"The market will pick the best solution after weighing costs and benefits."
Well.. yes, depending on what your definition of "best" is. If you mean "best" as something that is accessible to and understandable by many people, sure, that is what the market is doing right now, in everybody's favorite M$ produtct.
However, do you, at the same time, consider the "best" product one that has allowed billions of dollars in damage to be caused, time and time again, by script kiddies with a veangance? I am thinking maybe it is time to refine our definiton of "best" to include actual quality...
"I sort of disagree with the article on the whole topic of universities being our last bastion of freedom." Amen. Universities are certainly not meant to foster new and original thought... Take a look at the greek system, if you need an example. Modern Universities are nothing but extensions of the conformity factories that are America's High Schools. I am sure that many professors would like nothing more than for all the goths, punks, freaks, and other people choose not to kiss to rear of the animal of social acceptance to disapear from their classes. There are very few things prized more at the modern university than being ready and willing to give every will and desire of your own up to the collective conciousness.I sort of disagree with the article on the whole topic of universities being our last bastion of freedom. Sorry. I just hate when stupid people expect me to have the popular opinion simply because it is popular, and that is incredibly common, even here at a major University.
The article piques my interest, but I am wondering exactly what is meant by building a wormhole... The scientist acknowledges that we lack the technonlgy to build such a thing, but in saying that, does he have any CLUE about how to go about it? I can't even begin to imagine how to go about it. Of course, there is always that miniscule possibilty that we might find one through sheer luck...
