Yeh explorer on Windows is still the god. I notice that he says "While spatial Nautilius is not perfect (why oh why does it need 2 minutes to list 3000 files stored in one folder while Windows NT 4.0 Explorer lists 10000 files in 15 seconds on the same machine...)" Well I have a Pentium M 1.4 and it takes Explorer (Win2K) like 10 seconds to list my Jukebox\Singles network directory, Nautilus still needs > 30 seconds usually. I have no idea what is going on in this time, ls takes about 3-5

OK so my view of a folder is like a draw (even tho it's called a folder). why when i delete something beginning with the letter "D" does everything "E" onwards move around? I take my "Desk Tidy out of draw, my Eraser, Ruler and Pen all move position. its a flawed metaphor unless it works perfectly, This is what the Anandtech web page said which all the work was based on.

It doesn't happen in Windows, Mac OS X or anything else I've come across, all thier "Arrange Items By Name" type options do just that, whereas our "Arrange Items By Name" should really be "Always Arrange Items By Name". Cleanup is good for Manual Layout but I don't want to have to switch every god damn folder to manual layout!

(going off topic) Schumacher was done for cheating in the Villeneuve (spelling?) incident, when he failed to knock him off the track and Villeneuve hobbled round to get the world championship. It'd be pretty difficult to say that Shumacher isn't the best driver there, fact is that if he didn't have the obvious desire to win he would not have tried to knock people off the road.

ps. I'm British and as such it'd be very normal for me to hate Schumacher, I actually don't infact he's pretty amazing to watch, even tho he wins everything

If publishing a paper the "hey the star trek like replicators can exist" is way more career enhancing than "i thought star treck replicators could work, but i was wrong"

Cheating is not a sign of someones lack of skill. If you took that approach you'd have to Micheal Schumacher, Senna and Prost are a poor racing driver due to trying to knock other racing drivers off the road, infact they have something like 12 F1 world championships between them. If that doesn't prove that cheating comes from the desire to win not the lack of skill nothing does.

... Its a fact of life, but if you compare GNOME 1.X to 2 its amazing and well worth it, and even GNOME 2.2 to GNOME 2.6, the difference is amazing. Sure it may be a little heavy, and also if it was coded with speed as the #1 priority it'd be lighter, but its not, and its quite efficient for what it is. There isn't that much wasted really. and Nautilus (the only thing in GNOME which i've ever felt was slow) is way faster now than it used to be.

I do think that Linux Desktops tend to be heavy on RAM and light on CPU though, as apposed to XP which is more balanced on both, certainly its rare that my laptop (1.4 Ghz Pentium M) goes quicker than 600Mhz, but I never run out of RAM either (512Mb). And i do think that these are the sort of specs which are common (and thus GNOME should aim for).

Similarly you aren't ever going to see something like Grand Prix Legends or EF2000 a console for a very long time.

I think PC is where the hardcore ultra-realistic things happen, as well as the ultra innovative (see Gish slashdot article a bit ago) because you don't need a super expensive development kit.
