  1. Re:Little to do with tiny devices. on Hello MEMS, Goodbye Monitors · · Score: 1

As I remember my economics 101, profit is not directly porportional to price. If I buy a hundred widgets for 1 dollar, that a lot better then buying 1 widget for 50 dollars, profit wise. Of course this depends on demand. But having read over the stuff in detail a while back, I did come to the realization that these appear to be much easier to repair then traditional screens, either CRT or LED. Actually, how often HAVE you seen either of those being repaired? Then there is market share. Anyway I'm babbling, time for my opinion. The price will go down, because competitors to MEMS have significant market share. This means they don't have much elasticity of demand (a mathematical measurement of the ratio between demand and price; Gasoline, for example, in general has a low elasticity, price goes up people will still have roughly the same demand). Plus once economies of scale (it's always cheaper to buy or produce in bulk) get started, they can start dropping the price to attain market share. Right now they aren't shipping so everything they put out is an attempt to get and keep mind share. Anyway I'm starting to babble again. Gryftir Santa Carla By Night

I was in Morgan Hill for the Quake. We live up in the hills, a few miles fron the san andreas fault, so it was pretty powerful. But in this case the quake was beneficial for me. I had broken a vase doing dishes earlier, but now I have an excuse for it.

Oh, either thing about dogs knowing when an earthquake is about to come isn't true, or my dog is lagged because it was a few seconds into it before she started barking.

As for being an island, Isn't that a bit passe? I mean even Trancers perhaps the worst zombie and time travel movie of all time, has a reference to the idea. Though perhaps it's what we need to start the fragmentation of America.

Program Files for the media. While right now we currently mostly use our data for media, I predict an explosion of data formats, which will require bulky reading/viewing/listening/VR software to operate.

    Distributed computing data.
Your computer will be part of a p2p distributed computer project of some sort. Of course, since the project is either curing cancer, or earning you money, or evolving an ai, you don't mind.

IA (ai with a purpose :) you need to search your data, and if you want it to be at all intutive when you have over a million files you will need a program to organize it for you. plus aol-time warner sony will want to have your (hopefully) anonymous user data.

everything will be controlled, even your toaster (toaster/oven/microwave/pressure cooker etc. of course). after all, who wouldn't want there auto drive to know what's in their appointment books :).

  5. Some thoughts about the game on Pay to Play II - Project Entropia · · Score: 1

    hi people ,
Look, the money is only, in my opinion, a minor aspect of the game. Enemies will spawn randomly, to prevent camping. You can set up your own store. You can make your own quests. There are myriad aspects of the game that will be new and interesting (if you believe the buzz). Plus, for vaporware, it's got lots of screenshots.

Sure their will be people that buy into the game at high levels... But there have always been people that did that in online games. It's going to be a free mmporg, and according to the site, all you will need is a computer and a 3d card.

At least they are trying something new. This is MindArk's only project, they are taking risks, and it looks interesting. I'm usually cynical and embittered like most intelligent people, but lets be honest, this is probably the closest I'm going to get to playing games for a living. And that would be just damm cool.

Okay, while I really do have a opinion on the election (I'm voting gore then working for local libertarians) and don't really care about cmdrtaco's imagined or real bad conduct, I personally see a different side to this. Frankly I'm somewhat suprised that more people haven't seen it. Basically, I feel we should be asking ourselves, discussing, and if possible pointing each other in the direction of, what can we do to: a. help the current protesters b. get involved in similar actions (similar in content and intent if not style). Yes it's wonderful that we have all this information about and discussion of what happened, but I can't help but feel as if we are acting a bit ivory tower about it. Now, this isn't a call to arms, but at the very least we could be doing a letter campaign to newspapers and politicians. That of course would be a small portion of what we are capable of, especially considering all of the brilliant satire I've seen here. I just feel it would be a shame if I didn't do something. Maybe it's just me. In any case somebody needs to be in la watching the lapd during the DNC. I think the riot squads have "We treat everybody like a king." 10. Non Turning AI on Ask Jordan Pollack About AI - Or Anything Else · · Score: 1

I realize a lot of AI thought and philosophy was originally formulated based on the idea that humans are the only form of intelligent life. It would seem to me that most human thought on intelligence assumes that AI would be human understandable, but I feel that that might preclude whole classes (races?) of artifically constructed intelligences. I think to limit our thinking to mere human type reasoning can keep potentially enriching thoughts on AI as well as actual AI's from forming. I would be interested in not just opinions of how non human terrestrial based ai research (i've heard about insect robots, are these set up to be self learning?), but so called varlise or non terristrial non human comprehendible intelligences. Also what about artifical life evolving into ai, and what research on bottom up (evolving from simple randomly mutating AL to AI) is currently being conducted? Gryftir.

On the subject of chip designs and ai, I believe I read about self programming and designing chips which solved problems not only through software but through changing the way they where physically configured. They even bypassed various discoherence failsafes to work faster, now a self programming chip is in my mind a signifigant step toward ai, because it is closer to a brain then something hardwired. I wonder if these chips are being incorporated into ai research. Also quantaum computing seems another technology that should inventually be incorporated into AI. Of course considering the problems facing qubit registers I don't mean physically, but by setting up a virtual machine with tri bit processing. I wonder if this type of technology has been considered for incorporation into the current research as well. Gryftir.

while on the topic, I do believe that there is a estimate floating around that 50 years we will be unable to get to space without hitting a man made object. At 500,000 thousand miles per second, the various nuts, bolts, tools, and former presidents that where accidentally lost in earths orbit are going to do serious damage. Various agencies track what they can, but radar isn't effective if something is only 6 inches in length. Personally I have only read sci-fi stories about vacuum ships to collect these micro moons, but I have yet to see one design even approach a design board. And usually detailed plans for even the most ludicrous non military space ship plans are available as soon as postulated by a mission control janitor. Also, with the suns 11 year solar cycle entering the high energy stages, and MIR's inadequate radiation protection, isn't this pretty dangerous? And considering this will continue for a few years, won't this affect any visitors, especially the peopel vacationing, who will most definitly be wanting a SpaSeWalk(tm) during their trip? Space suits aren't exactly made of a couple thousand gallons of water to prevent those pesky alpha and gamma rays from crisping a unforunate caught in a solar storm, which unless there are solar sattelites I don't know about, your not going to have more then 3 secs warning MAX (see below ascii drawing) to avoid.
    ############### sat
    /****\ ######## /
    |__Sun_|#######* # {e} .
    \____/ ##############\
    MIR

Now, best scenario as I see it, a solar storm knocks out a sattelite which is instantly noticed, this info is sent to MIR which radios everybody to get inside. and this is if MIR is farthest from the sun and directly opposite a sat which is being monitored. note this is with current sattelites and would work only if everytime a sat was knocked out (and the solar radiation might be lethal and still not get a sat, people in mir got inside, real quickly and seriously battened down.) all in all this ain't good. Just some thoughts and yes my grammar and ascii are attrocious, but you try it on here.

Well, maybe this isn't the most appropriate area to bring it up, but, having researched the subject, I just wanted to state some facts and opinions, (which is which should be self evident), on the deplorable state of youth rights in america, especially in american schools. First some facts: (Note: As this was researched in california, not every instance applies to every state, however, case law from other states are often used to argue points and decide verdicts on legality in court. Also, these were last extensivly researched by me in 1994 so not all information is up to date.) Because of various judicial decisions, public schools, while still being government run, are considered to be half way between having the rights of parents and the limitations of a government agency. For example, public schools can conduct searches without a warrant, and with limited (example anon tip of drugs in a locker room) provocation, not just of public property (lockers etc.) but of back packs and student persons. This can include strip, but not cavity searches. First Amendment rights can be extensively limited, including but non limited to clothing, religious symbols, student newsletters, non school sponsored student or individual publications, club and group formation ("those evil chess players are a gang!"), class room assignments and actual speech, the right to gather and protest, and the on campus circulation of petitions. While in certain instances judges have supported students in speech away from school (spee and his band teacher web page for the initated)this is also not free from restrictions. I won't even get into the 5th amendment rights issue, but I've yet to see a trial by jury of peers. Now maybe I'm miss interpreting the constitution, but I believe either the 14 or 15 amendment states that all persons born or naturalized in the united states get the same rights, and it seems the only way this is possible is by not viewing minors as persons. In which case, Us non-entities should get protection from corprol punishment by the society for prevention of cruelty to animals. Reminds me of something about no cruel or unusual punishments. Just 35 (inflation) cents. Flames will be reported to pinkerton. Gryftir.
