  1. Dear Nanny-State,

  2. Jeez ... indeed. on Women Increasingly Freezing Their Eggs To Pursue Their Careers · · Score: 1

No, but every child SHOULD have parents who wanted them so much that they were willing to try anything to have them.
My mother was in her early 40s and my father in his mid 50s when they had me. Yes, I lost my father young, but I wouldn't have had my world any other way.

As a gal with 40 looming and no prospects of the right guy looming it's a scary world. Yes, I've had the jerks telling me "too bad, it's just not in the cards for you" or "it's not fair to the child for you to consider having them on your own"... .but I know if I choose to go to extremes no one would ever be able to tell my child I didn't want them.

This is often the point where a few "kind and giving 'gentlemen' offer their services".

Concur that it is rare a college would give credits IN YOUR MAJOR in response to an AP exam, but they do give credits. As a CS major I received 8 credits in Physics (Physics I and II) at my college for a "3" on my AP Physics exam. This was enough to have me registering a day earlier than the other students in my 'class', which was a blessing, and crossed off a distribution of studies requirement from my 'to do' list.

Bah, the nerds aren't hostile towards women... they're mostly afraid of them :) I say that with love to all my g33ks.

I never had an issue with any of the guys I went to school with while going after my CS degree.

Last I checked, I'm a girl. I took AP Comp Sci in HS, but did NOT take the AP exam. Why? Because it was my planned degree in college, and I knew they wouldn't give me credits in my major, so why pay to take the test? Instead I took a Physics AP exam to cross off a few distribution of studies classes.

Not a lot of gals thought the way I did back in high school. Fact is they liked the english-y and touchy feely subjects more. Please don't press these women to go into a field they are NOT mentally equiped to do well in. Identify the ones that have the potential and encourage them to explore it, but don't put a bounty on their heads. I want the job because I do it well, not because of my genitalia or the color of my flesh.

  6. Fundamentals on Ask Slashdot: Best Alternative To the Canonical Computer Science Degree? · · Score: 1

My two cents, you still need a degree, which I don't think you disagree with. Computer Science is what my undergrad is in and I worked my way through as a web monkey as well. If there had been a Software Engineering BS where I attended I would have gone that route. The structure and fundamentals of full life cycle apply to any development effort (including web development). Make sure you're getting the data structures down, which still apply as well as Requirements, Testing, and a solid focus on Cybersecurity and Networking if you want to make yourself an even bigger draw.

My biggest complaint are 18-month coursework or self-trained individuals who more often than not end up being hacks. Don't be a hack.

I too am shopping for a Win7 machine and finding it to be a bit of a challenge.

Why are there always so many people eager to jam Win8 down your throat. If my criteria is Win7 (for whatever reason) just recognize that is what I want and don't try to convince me otherwise, completely ignoring the question at hand. If you were at a car dealership with the intentions of purchasing an SUV and the dealer kept telling you... no, no, your kids will fit into this 4 door and it will get better mileage, you'll like it.. are you buying the 4 door? Didn't think so. That said, if you can help us find places w/ more options please do speak up! After all, more of us avoiding Win8 will just amp up the discounts on those Win8 machines even more (yes, they're cheaper than Win7 machines right now).

So far I've had a little luck on Amazon creating a list of options to consider, and a few in Dell's outlet (here's where the people who are staunch anti-Dell jump down my throat too).

Good luck (to both of us).

Maybe the government should dump money towards this, purchasing the data mining algorithms etc that go along with these wrist bands and then find a way to retrofit the whole system back to suspected terrorists.

  9. You get what you pay for and what you invest in. on Your Online Education Experience? · · Score: 1

Sure, if you've been working in the field chances are you'll already know a good bit of the material in core classes, particularly the lower level courses. On the other hand, having the piece of paper is critical in many situations - so it's important to stick to it. Now, I will add one caveat and note that you get what you pay for - if you selected a college that is not well regarded then shame on you for taking the quick/cheap/easy way out.

I too have worked towards a degree (my masters) using online educational programs, but unlike you there aren't too many places to attain this locally without drudging through extended travel and adverse weather to attend class. I went the route of UMUC (University of Maryland) for my online Masters study because they are well regarded in online studies and have been at the forefront of online education. They are also a well known education institution. I also studied online through Michigan State University for a Graduate Certificate program.

With the wealth of schools offering online classes, you can find a place that will challenge you every bit as hard as a traditional school and will provide a degree that stands up to the riggors. I put in my time, I invested in myself - and I laugh in the faces of anyone that would discard my education for being online as I know I can run rings around them.
