    I know NeXT boxen are relics from the past, for all intensive purposes, useless. However, they are antiques from a company that no longer exists. They were, in reality, a milestone in computing technology. Superior to everything else around them, NeXT boxes a testiment to innovation (unlike most of what we see today).

    I am not sure as to how your comment got moderated up? Moderators not reading the article. Whilst your comments would be applicable if such a thing was done TODAY, (2001). I agree that it would be a tradegy and a waste. But this was done back in 1993 with a case that NeXT had given the person (CASE ONLY, no logo, rubber feet, circuit borads &tc). And another case from another machine that was not in 100% working order. But again, everything from the inside was taken out. So there was no loss what so ever, if you look at it with regard to the time of when the burn actually occoured.

    Unfortunately you then get the other side of the coin, the number of EMails I have recieved from people trying to send EMails to a friend and having it bounce back with an over quota message and then demanding to know what that means or telling you to fix your computers is phenomenal.

    I term these people aquaintance's. Not friends. I tend to call people who have a clue friends, well unless they are really really good looking. In which case they get my mobile number but no email address that i actually check :)

    You know, If he was really a warrior, that copper axe of his would make much more sense as a weapon than for something to chop wood as many currently think.

    Copper is actually too soft a metal to be used as a weapon. If this is the cave man/ ice man that i recall, he also has a lot of tattoos over his body, the axe may have been used for ceremonial reasons.

    My turn to hypothesise as to why there is an arrowhead in his back.

    * Pissed of a father, by ceremoniously killing his child.
    * Accident of some sort.
    * Rival tribe or similar.
    * Pissed of someone else, just a general pissing off, nothing too big *g*.

    Actually that is not really a fair comparison. Why? Well when generating code for a PPC chip the compiler has to do a sh*t load more work than for an x86 chip.

    Comparing Photoshop filters is fair when you consider how often they are used &tc during the day at a work place, and with the Linux kernel i doubt anyone other than developers is going to be compiling more than 5x a month (5x allows for screwing options up &tc).

    I personally would love to see a list of *fair* comparisons for both machines, ie:

    * Photoshop filters (grapics pros do make up a lot of apples market)
    * RC5 rate, (Faster Key Rates DAMN IT
    * MP3/Lame/Ogg Encoding (same bit rate, similar codec, **same quality**
    * Generation of XLS spread sheet


    You get the idea, a comprehensive test that covers all aspects that would be important in day to day use.

    I think that you will find that a DDR will not nett very much more than a 30%(max) performance gain over PC133 SDRAM.

    The reason that the G4 has both the L3 and L2 cache the way that it does currently is becuase it is very much a RISC CPU from start to finish, taking more instrucitons to get the same job done.

    So that this does not/will not inconvenience you by starving the processor for work to do (2x800 Mhz G4, DAMN! That would improve my RC5 rate :) it needs the extra/faster memory (L3.)

    Not wishing to be rude or at all inflammatory but for those of us who are using Mac OS X will already have 1.3.7 as the version of Darwin (OS X 10.0.4). Although this may not have as yet propogated down to the iso's yet. I would definately say it has been released

    I only have one problem with your comparison. The RC5 rate that the G4 is able to achive using AltiVec is sweet, and best bar non clock for clock. (My Duron 950 pulls 3.3MKeys/s, approx the same as the G4 - 400). But what you fail to take into account with the P4 is that this new architechture requires a decent compiler, and software to be optimised to run properly on it. I doubt that this has been done with the P4. (None the less i still want a Dual G4 to replace my Duron, and a TiBook to replace my iBook).

    Actually i read the above as Miguel saying that it was "a good one" as in lie, BS, what have you to "FreeBSD has no market share, so they say". Whoever they is. IE: Miguel is not saying FreeBSD has no market share, only commenting on who ever made that assertion, and saying that they are full of it.

    Over at pricewatch you can get 3x512MB for $132. 6x256MB is even cheaper ($108), but of course PowerMac motherboards dont have 6+ RAM slots

    Two questions? Is this SO-DIMM memory that you are referring to? And what is the quality of this memory like? Remembering of course that with the PowerBooks apple are supporting the whole machine for up to three years for anything. And crap memmory == more chance of odd problems. That aside i do believe that apple charge waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much. For there memory.

    Darwin is only PART of OS X. Just because the undelying arcitecture has been ported to OSX does not mean that apple will release or port Aqua (the GUI).

    Aqua is so filled with PPC specific code that it would be a nightmare to port, and i have a feeling that porting it to x86 would prove to much of a headache for apple. At the moment, apple only have to code for one set of hardware (the UMA1/2) that they have happening. They do not need to worry about a stack of video cards, a swag of sound cards, and enough controller cards that even a 3 year old with a stick would get tired pointing at.

    Remember Darwin is PART of X, as is Aqua, Cocoa, Java, Carbon, OpenGL. Darwin is made up of Mach, BSD and i think that there is a third....

    The G4, with it's hockey puck, God Aweful, one-eyed mouse and positively horrible keyboard, guarantee it won't get used. No need to even get down to the idiot MacOS (I'm sorry, I have to tell the OS how much memory to give an application when I have 400 MB free? WHAT?).

    Well i think Apple heard people on the Mouse and Keyboard issue, seeing as how even the lowly iMac has a decent full size Keyboard, and a better mouse. (Admittedly a one button mouse, but better).

    A bit late for you yes. But i think that you made a mistake in saying because the mouse+kb == crap the whole hardware set it also crap. I consider the hardware to be the box, ie: My PC @ home is the whole box (Duron950+384MB RAM...). The only place where the Keyboard and mouse should be counted are laptops: ie: my iBook (which runs OS X, fairly. well useably).

    Actually this solaris user needs GNOME.

    I happen to use X-Terms at uni, and i HATE CDE. I would much rather use gnome.

    Sure i could compile my own WM and run that insted, but that would give the uni grounds for removing my access for "not using the systems for purposes relate to my Course". That and the fact that i would need to take a back up as they wipe user accounts every semester/year (this years policy has not been made clear), and it is a pain getting a lot of data from that box (firewalled insanely). That and my quota being rather small, ie: barely enough to do my WORK, let alone store a wm.

    Enough about myself, what about those students who dont even know what unix is, let alone how to use this machine, hell it is amusing watching some of these 2nd/3rd year students try to get an X-Term up. A the GNOME (win95 lookalike) interface would be a godsend here.

    So in summation, it is my opinion that GNOME would be nice for Solaris, seeing as the Uni still uses it (fyi: University of South Australia - Levels Campus, machine name: logic.)

    PS:And dont sun also sell WORKSTATIONS? Things that sit on desks with screens. If i am not mistaken are not also SunRays [terminal computing/advanced xterms that use smartcards and are stateless] used with a GUI? The connnect to say an EXXX->E10K(yeah over kill) which is the server, but they run X? GNOME be nice there to meethinks!

    Poster A:Well, due to the fact that the PPC7400 has an Alt ivec unit it is much faster than any comparable Intel processor. To get the same speed from Intel hardware you need something like 50 dual Pentium /// computers.

    PosterB:Who moderates these comments up when they are completely false and incorrect babble only believed by .1% of all computer users (because they like to make their art "pretty")? Everything the guy said is wrong. And obviously wrong.


    I would like to point out the following FACTS:
    For certain well written applications where there are good developers the AltiVEC unit of the PPC 7400 (G4) shit canes all over the PIII. Allow me to post some results from the distributed.net live stats database: http://n0cgi.distributed.net/speed/
    Disclaimer: I have selected Only a FEW of the RELEVANT results on the site, please feel free to verrify what i have posted.

    Power PC 7400 G4- 450- 7,388,825 keys/sec.
    Intel Pentium III- 1000- 5,686,498 keys/sec
    AMD K7 Athlon Thunderbird- 1600- 5,662,963 keys/sec [NOTE: this is a single proc machine!]

    This tells me that at RC5-64 cracking the G4 is faster than the PIII (not 50x though, approx 50%) The other thing is that the G4 draws what ~7 Watts? the PIII ~35-55 Watts? (i honestly dont know, but i have a feeling that this is ball park). Dont forget that power costs money, and in South Australia, it looks like depending on who you are you could be facing 300% price hikes on it!

    Seriously though, this shit scares me? Is there anyway to protect/imdemnify yourselft against such things when you want to desperately desire to abuse some twat that needs it? Can an american sue me even though i am an australian for implying / saying that they are a [insult here][bodypart here if needed]?

    I think that comparing the compile times for an x86 based arch to a PPC based arch to be unfair.

    If i am correct in my assumption the following things are true:
    1: x86 compilers are much more mature than PPC (gcc in this case), both in terms of optimised code generated and the speed at which that code is generated.
    2: PPC relies on the compiler to optimise the code, the chip has not optimisation that occours as the code is run at all.
    3: More than just benchmarks run faster. RC5 (http://www.distributed.net) G4's absolutely cane over x86 chips. When i did a few seti blocks because i was bored, my G3 366 was faster than my Duron733 [iBook was ~8+ hours faster](the duron is now running at 950). I am assuming that the AltiVec unit of the G4 would be used for seti, and that would mean a G4 would be even faster

    I dont use any MS tools currently for playing/ripping and compressing my MP3's. I do use a Microsoft OS. I dont intend on altering the tools that i use. I fail to see how it will effect anybody who currently rips/compresses MP3s.

    People like you and I who know what we are doing and dont use tools/programmes/&tc that are force fed to us are going to tell our friends what tools and programs to use, they will tell their friends too.

    Unless MS break something so that alternative compression programs/algorithms fail i do not see how such a scheme will gain wide spread success. If people can not share they will hate it, if they hate it they will not use it, if no one uses it, no problem. Give it 10 years and who knows...

    I'm not the original poster, but I want compatibility as in I can erase GTK and GNOME-libs and still use GIMP

    Well this is possible, BUT you would need to have the GTK libs on your system for a small while, what you would need to do is statically link the nessesary libs into (the) GIMP, and then you would not need the gtk/gnome libs that (the) GIMP may or may not depend on (i dont know)

  23. Honestly I feel that OSX for x86 would hurt APPL on OS X on x86? · · Score: 1

    The reason that i say this is that apple is a Hardware house. They sell what is in my opinion excellent processors, coupled with medioce HDDs, CDRs, and Video Cards. I really could not comment on their mobos, but i have the feeling that as they are not 3rd party they would be ok.

    All this they sell relatively expensively (compared to getting the run of the mill PC), but people buy them, either coz they love the hardware &tc or the OS. Both valid. But if they released OS X for x86 i would probably leave my thoughts of their hardware as drool alone, esp the TiBook. And buy cheap PC stuff coz it is cheap. :).

    Hrmm what am i trying to say here, well basically i believe that are BOTH a H/W company and if x86 OSX was avail they would become a S/W company, and i think that MS would juggernaut them for it. No office, No IE, no nothing!

    There is an excellent NATIVE web browser for Mac OS X, called OmniWeb. You can download it from www.omnigroup.com.

    I was under the impression that ANY carbon application was native to both Classic OS as well as OS X. This is what apple have to say here:

    "What is Carbon?
    Like Classic apps, Carbon applications run on Mac OS 9 -- but they also run on Mac OS X. They'll get all the great features of Darwin, like protected memory for crash-resistant computing and preemptive multitasking for a more responsive system, as well as the new Aqua look and feel. "

    And the IE in the PB was a carbonised app so it got the protected memory, multitasking &tc. As for the part about where apple got the ideas from i am not aware of. It would be a pity if apple did just grab the idea for sherlock from the ppl who make OmniWeb.
