Having played with the PB myself, i can attest that it is not as insidious as you may think or imply, although the subliminal is there. What you see is simply the behavior of the "new" finder. What this version of the finder does (which is very much like TkDesk that i onced used on my linux box ~'96/97) Is when you select something with a single click, the far right pane displays a larger icon of that program/picture/folder &tc's icon there. This icon is double clickable as well. If for example instead of IE it was QIII that was selected, the icon would merely be the QIII icon.

If my understanding is correct, it is not SMP you are talking about, but AMP or AsMP, as in Asymmetric. I have a feeling that is the correct name. It will not be untill OS X (March) ships that those who have Apple H/W can play with non beta SMP OS. (As a side note: I have a Duron on my desk and a Gen1 iBookSE that i carry around with me.)

Unless i am mistaken the way that Apple's method of implimentation varies significantly to Intels, apple is able to (at least on my iBook) change the CPU speed to relatively anything based apon how much is currently needed to do the work, and is very dynamic, this is done to get better batterly life. Intels solution (i think i am correct here) is LAME, they just run the processor at (2) Two different speeds, eg: 600MHz when plugged into power point, and say 400MHz when running of the battery.
