Try Galeon, it has the feautures you want (http://galeon.sourceforge.net/) (although I don't use mouse gestures and I don't know if they can be used with gaeleon -- I did a quick google search, people say it is supported).
Why not put them in a different room and use SSH and remote-management-by-serial-console (and a nice serial-card (see also: www.consoleserver.com)), you don't need earplugs for that setup.:)

If you want a good system, good with Debian and there standard kernel, it works.
