but I share his views on how microsoft should be punisched:
The level of fines that would serve as a
deterrent for cash rich Microsoft would be difficult to fathom, but one might make these fines deter more by directing the money to be paid into trust funds that would fund the development of free software, an endeavor that Microsoft has indicated it strongly opposes as a threat to its own monopoly. This would give Microsoft a much greater incentive to abide by the agreement.
You probably didn't download a clean Linus kernel:
www.kernel.org
but you have something like a distributionkernel (RH/Mandrake/Suse/Debian/Slack/whatever it is)
Only reason they wrote this, is because m$ internal network was infected and it turned out... it's a _lot_ of work getting all those machines patched...
we have this now... we might as well trow it into the world.
Because performance sucked BIG time, compared to MySQL when the slashcode project was started.
I'm sure the slashcode peeps are working on making it DB-independant (eventually) (wouldn't you think ?)
SourceForge already runs on PostgreSQL now, even RedHat is gonna sell it commercially
I hate benchmarks, but there is a benchmark that says PostgreSQL won from the biggest commercial providers of Databases too
I don't really believe much of it though, I'll rather use what works best for me, then some very specific tests (yes I know standard tests where used).

Don't be fooled, people have said it again and again.
But w2k isn't good either...
you know why ?
There betas work... there releases don't.
Why not use Linux ?
Why not use the Linux Virtual Server Project.
They have really nice failover support.
Also OSDN employees should probably know by now how to handle Linux machine and routers and firewalling, right ?
You can if you are using EXT3, after all it's just EXT2 with a special file
You can even easily 'convert' it back...
just unmount (maybe even remount ?) and mount it again, that's all.
(you can't ofcourse mount a unchecked ext3 as ext2, but that's pretty much the only restriction!)
The proplem is with existing apps, people use special programs to solve specific needs,
those need to be able to run under wine (you need a windows licence ?) or there needs to be an eq. app.
Or you need a completly new solution.
Look at how much apps and what apps people use...
They need to be ALL available, when they switch, or a solution atleast as good.
Also you could be talking about retraining for that too (after all people use Apps not so much OS's) !
This is a very old statement...
but it's starting to be easier and easier with all the packages that are available.
(I personally think it's easier that way... I love apt-get;))
Only things that CAN still take time, is if you want to do custom things...
and custom things always take time...
Although I do feel that with Unix/Linux I do end up doing a lot of custom things... because I can (which would otherwise not have been possible, probably, not without buying an other BIG expansive tool/program) !
(which is great, but yes, does take time)
Actually, if other distro's would do like Debian you wouldn't have that problem (eg no symlink from/usr/include/linux to/usr/src/linux/include or something, I can't check it I got debian;)
No it's microsoft it's self, look:
"Then between 1972 and 1995, for reasons economists are still debating, the rate of improvement collapsed to less than one fiftieth that of the previous era, despite a widespread adoption of computers."
Microsoft started:
1975
Now when was Microsoft starting to loose ground:
1995 ?:)
If Microsoft was using Linux code in Windows, why the hell does it always crash?
Ever notice how Windows 2000 is working better then all other versions of Linux euh... Windows;)
Only if you can think of a way that works without loosing performance.
Great would be to be able to 'detect' bad memory, maybe when you get a 'corrected ECC error' or similair you could start by marking it bad
and testing it later ?
actually, what would be the benefit of opensource...
not inventing the wheel a hundred times a year !
I'm sure if it was open source all airports in the world could benefit from it.
The same especially goes for the metrocard system.
I mean if one good system is on the table, why not use it everywhere ?

But now even Hemos doesn't read the articles anymore to check up on them ?
geez.
For people who don't understand why that is, k-meloen has a setting for user-agent-name or whatever.

yeah great !: :(
'We cannot deliver this product outside of the U.S.'
so it says at thinkgeek, well great product
Well I for one wouldn't mind if they hurt them selve, please, be my guest ! :)
cnn.com says: New York City reports at least 78 police officers missing, 200 firefighters presumed dead.
We don't give it away, the funny thing with software is, if you make a copy for someone else, you don't have suffer for it in any way.
And if you give it to a lot of people, a fair chance is, someone will get an idea and make your little project bigger and better.
That's one of many reasons.

Actually Lynx was probably one of the first because it's based on the Libwww.

Actually a lot of galls I know use Macs and Mac just turned to Unix, so we're kewl again ;)

They have a webmaster ? Didn't you see the 'nice' ;)
metatag generator Frontpage ?
Try turning off sync, that'll help (afterall that's probably what mysql does).
