I am local (across the bay) and I can tell you that the Salesforce Tower sticks out like a sore thumb. Arrogant egotistic overkill. I have not met anyone that likes the way it transforms the look of beautiful San Francisco. SF used to have a very strong preservationist city hall; I guess the last decade or two have seen them become hypnotized by the tech money. Too bad, that ugly thing is there to stay. And the light show ("art" ha ha) at the top is going be pouring salt on the wound. Creepy.
Slashdot is probably the only site I visit every day and at least read every headline. The new design is terrible for all the reasons already posted. I expect I'll drop/. if you make this change...the current site has it's problems but the revision is awful.
I'm not going to read the article. What does srussia mean by "the shift" which is in the last sentance? She created a controversial shift while head of darpa? Those exotic programs which are mentioned in the article ought to take a lot longer than 3 years to manifest, so weren't they already in motion when she took over?
When I first posted as AC I didn't see it show in comment so I posted with my login. On my original post someone kindly suggested "Time of the Great Freeze" by Silverburg. It does look about right...I'm going to read it and find out. As a kid that was a world that was close enough to touch.
Does anyone recall a book from the 60s or so where a young guy leaves his glacier-buried city to explore the surface world for the first time in centuries? As a kid it was a great story but I can't recall the name or author. My prev posts are hidden for some reason.
I guess I don't see what the thrill is, exactly. If it's main function is to provide a single interface to 'channels', and I would still have to suffer through endless credit card commercials, then...sigh. Thanks for the input though.
I have zilch experience with boxee but did spend some time on it's site a couple of weeks ago to see if it might be of utility when viewing tv shows or movies online. For the life of me I could not figure out what its supposed to do 'for me'. The boxee website is a great example of what happens when they people involved are so deeply entrenched in whatever realm boxee is that they have no clue how to communicate to 'regular' people.
A site like hulu is easy to figure out. But it's got too many commercials and they seem to be adding more all the time. Boxee...someone tell me what it's good for? Like you were explaining to someone who didn't know already???
Is zentrack still going anywhere? The demo is offline, most of the documentation web pages are broken, the forums are very inactive. You can't really tell anything about it unless you install it. zentrack sounds good, but they're doing a terrible job of presenting whatever it is they have to offer.
This is a disaster. I have hundreds of links to usenet articles via the old google groups. Those are all dead now. There is no browsable hierarchy of "groups"; no real message threading; far less info on a screen; what a mess. Google groups became my primary interface to usenet and my favorite aspect of google. It seems that google has completely lost its sense. This is one hell of a killer mistake by google.
I admit it's pretty lame that they took down the existing Deja service. Why, you have to wonder. But Deja has been teetering for quite a while and Google stepped up to the plate. This is a lot better than Deja just tossing their servers into a dumpster. There is a good chance that they'll put together a decent interface to the usenet data. And at least some chance that they'll allow the data to be exposed to other engines. So instead of flaming Google, let's let them know how important these issues are for us, and try to engage them in constructive solutions.
So here's my suggestion to Google: Do whatever you want with your own interface to the data, which will probably be excellent. But if you want to be heros, find a way to get this data into the public domain.
If anyone spends more than 15 seconds seriously doubting the fact that we have been to the moon they are at least one of the following:
- a combination of stupid and gullible
- delusional
- worst of all, cynical to the point that they are more entertained by the notion that we might have faked it than they are by the idea that we have actually been to the moon.
All three types of persons deserve our compassion. As far as Fox goes, how money grubbing can you get. Sheesh. Let's not put them in charge of anything important.

Are you going to pose such a question (an RDF of the fm data) to the fm folks? It's be great if they do it, but I'd still be surprised. As I mentioned, the fm sites code is not open, and it's a toss up whether this is because it takes work to open source the code, or they don't want to risk competitors. I have no idea.
You really think their income comes from nick-nacks and going on tour?

That would be excellent. However I don't know if scoop etc would be at all interested in having an alternate-look fm around even if it was the old fm they created, as if it was a separate site it might divert some of the crowd and revenue base. It's not like the ODP, unfortunately. If I'm not mistaken the fm source is also unavailable, although it would be cool if it was.
Anyways it would be great to see a reproduction of the just passed fm look if you can get to it, or to hear from you if you find a site that has a similiar look and feel.
This is really a pita as I just recently started imaging sites I had marked as having excellent or interesting designs; I discovered that at least half of them were already altered enough that I didn't care anymore. I had no idea fm was going to poof on me too.

It's kind of amazed me, watching the responses to fmII, here and on fm. Why are there so many posts flaming those that don't like the changes? "Love it or leave it" type attitudes around OSS seem kind of weird.
Same with Taco's "Those who can, create. Those who can't, bitch." That's just lame, besides being untrue. It's more the other way around - if you're a creator, you have to expect to displease some. You and your pals don't have to herniate over a bit of criticism, or even screwing up once in a while. If we (those cursed criticizers) didn't appreciate what you're offering we wouldn't bother telling you what we think!

Thanks for the pointer to the original fm lookalike. Does anyone have an image of the just retired fm look, or a pointer to a site with the same look? I don't want to forget it, it was one of the most livable layouts I'd run into.

I never would have thought that slashdot would sink to this. Geez, disappointing. If you keep this up, sayonara. No wonder taco boogied.

Thank you! That does look like it could be the right book. I'll reread it and see what it's like now.
I tried to research this book before via google but couldn't get a fix on it. When I saw this topic on /. it seemed possible that someone would know.
